If you have to feed people snacks and are worried about sugar (not to mention the cost of snacks, which is relatively high) you should consider making fruit leather. You start with a puree of fruit (like applesauce, peach, pear, apricot, or mixed fruits.) These sheets fit in the Nesco American Harvest dehydrator. Fruit leather can be carried for a quick energy snack for hikers, brown baggers, hungry people who need extra sustenance, and of course, the kids.

During peach season, you can buy fresh ripe peaches, even a bit bruised, and make the most tasty snacks. Great for raspberries, blueberries and strawberries, if you have a lot of them. You can mix berries with apple or peach to stretch them a bit and make some nice varieties of fruit leather. You can even get crazy and dribble the blueberry or raspberry puree onto an apple base for swirly fruit leather.

For some reason, fruit leather is fun, like red licorice, whereas plain old dried fruit is definitely NOT FUN (for example PRUNES, or dried peaches or apricots once your older brother suggests to you that they really are ears that fell off a mummy. Blech.)

You can also make RAW CRACKERS from vegetable puree plus flax seed using these sheets, which is what I do. The method is very simple; you take your blender mix the following:

1 cup soaked sunflower seeds

1 cup soaked walnuts

1 cup soaked almonds

1 tomato

1 cup red onion (chopped)

3 tablespoons flaxseed

3 teaspoons cumin seed

2 teaspoons salt

You eliminate the nuts and use more flax seed and sunflower seeds, if nuts are too rich or you are allergic. Dry this batter on the sheets. It will pull off like fruit leather, and you can cut them up into triangles. They will eventually dry further into crisps. They are incredibly tasty.

I bought a set of these to make fruit rolls for hiking. The Scouts in my troop are always impressed with them (if I bring enough to share). They work great, and are very easy to use. Simply spray them with Pam and pour your fruit mixture on them. Put them in the dehydrator and turn it on. For the fruit mixture, I usually use unsweetened applesauce (from big Costco jars) mixed with jam or jelly. In season, I've also used fresh fruit with applesauce, but it sometimes comes out a little sour.

I've also had no trouble with them warping, as another has mentioned. I once tried to make fruit rolls on waxed paper, instead of buying these. Don't do that, because the waxed paper will become permanently bonded to the fuit.

My mother has these and I used to make lots of fruit rolls with them lots of fun, and a good treat! I recommend mixing applesauce with (thawed) frozen fruit juice concentrate of your choice to make whatever flavor you like. My favorite was mixing grape fruit juice concentrate with the applesauce. It makes a very deep purple and fruity treat. (Ratio was one can frozen concentrate to a big jar of applesauce. I'll edit my post and add specific sizes soon.)

When I got my dehydrator, it came with one fruit roll sheet. I ordered another package of sheets but was deeply disappointed with what I got.

Yes, they are the same shape and size as the original, but they are made of a heavier plastic that warps! I have never had a problem with my original sheet warping, but all of the extra sheets I ordered warped on their first run in the dehydrator.

These sheets are difficult to use because the liquids I put on them for dehydration run down into the low spots and I cannot get a nice uniform dried fruit rolls the way I can with the original sheet that came with the dehydrator.

Great purchase to go with my Nesco FD-60 bought from Walmart.com site-to-store (not the FD-27 or FD-50 listed above as compatible products). For those like me looking for fruit leather sheets and unsure whether they'll fit your machine, the overall diameter of these sheets is 13", with the inner donut hole 3". Each sheet holds about 2 cups of pureed fruit. (For example, 2 large peaches, a bit less than a pound.)

What I've tried so far, all with a bit of lemon juice to preserve color and freshen the fruit flavor:

2 cups of applesauce with 1/3 cup de-frozen grape/raspberry juice too sweet, will use maybe a scant 1/4 cup next time. Rather sticky pliable leather. I just stirred this together in a bowl and then spread on tray.

2 large diced peaches (pitted, not peeled), thrown in the blender with a little lemon juice, one peach at a time. Added not much of anything else came out too crisp to roll. Peaches are nice this way, but needs a bit of syrup (not sugar) to keep the peach pliable.

2 peaches as above with grape/raspberry concentrate and a little corn syrup for pliability excellent!

Package of Dole natural frozen tropical fruit (no sweeteners) pineapple, mango, strawberries, kiwi, maybe something else. Defrosted, tossed in blender, added a little of the grape/raspberry concentrate and corn syrup. Excellent!

The pouring shield is a definite convenience on my mixer, making it easy to add both wet and dry ingredients without stopping the mixing process and raising the beater, whisk, or dough hook. It removes extremely easily from the bowl once you figure the trick of getting it on an off, and it cleans quickly with a swipe of hot, soapy water or a run through the dishwasher, much like all Kitchen Aid mixer attachments.

I'm a little torn on the rating. I'd like to give it four stars, but I've only given the shield three stars because of a few inconveniences listed below. I'm happy it came free of charge with my mixer and I would probably buy another if mine ever became damaged. For someone without the pouring shield, I would certainly recommend they consider buying it, but with the following things kept in mind...

I've found that when making anything, be it bread or cookies or whathaveyou, you really should consider adding absolutely no more than 1/2 cup (dry US measure) of ingredients at a time to the bowl. Best if you add less to the bowl a few more times. Every time I've made bread, if I try adding 1/2 cup flour or more during the last mixing stage, even the low speed of 2 results in ingredients splattered up onto and under the pouring shield.

In addition, the convenient separability of the pouring shield can fast become an inconvenience if you're not careful. If anything splashes, I've found that it splashes right into the little hinges that make the pouring shield separateable from itself. Once your ingredients are in the hinges, they're down the side of the bowl, onto your countertop, and probably onto you.

I've gotta say, I really think this thing is more trouble than its worth. My mom bought this for me, and it rarely got used. Somewhere along the line, she forgot she gave me the first one, and bought me another one. So the older one sits in the cupboard looking very lonely keeping the second one company still in its box. Here's why: first off, the shield comes in two sections, and they aren't all that easy to attach to one another. Now you would think that if they don't go together easily, at least they'd STAY together, right? Nope. Mine keep coming apart. Now, if you get the bowl pretty full, say with a double batch of chocolate chip cookie dough, forget it the thing is utterly useless. Once the dough rides up in the bowl, the shield becomes dislodged, making you want to chuck it out the nearest window. I like that it keeps the flour out of the entire kitchen if you add it while the mixer is going but it gets stuck in the little "ramp" anyway, making you shove it all down with a rubber scraper. It would also be nice for something liquid and particularly sloppy. But all in all, I find it a waste of time and money. Fortunately it was my mom's money, not mine. (By the way, she has one and loves it. Can't figure out WHY exactly, because she has the same complaints I do. She just must like washing a couple more dishes...) If you want to spend money on a USEFUL Kitchenaid accesory, buy an extra bowl one with a handle, and a set of lids.

This is a cool feature for this mixer.

I use it with mashed potatoes and chocolate chip cookies. It is essential, if you want to whip mashed potatoes and keep them in the bowl. With chocolate chip cookies the batter is so thick if you didn't have this on when you were adding the chips, they would wind up in orbit.

I find this guard easy to put on and easy to use.

The ramp for ingredients makes it handy to add stuff on the fly. It would be nicer if this feature had a wider opening and was steeper angled. I find I often had to push stuff down it. Also, when adding flour from another bowl, it was tricky to narrow the flow down enough to meet the width of this chute opening.

My pouring shield did not come with the mixer, I bought it separate, at that time for $14.00, which I thought was pretty pricey for a piece of plastic. However, when you use a mixer of this capability, you really need it.

Occassionally, if you over fill the bowl, it will lift this guard right off. It is held on by gravity alone, which generally is enough. It is a guard, not something that makes the mixer idiot proof and sometimes I'm that idiot that pushes the limit.

UPDATE:

I posted this review over 10 years ago...Yikes. But, I stand corrected. Technically the shield does not stay in place by gravity alone. If you have the right and left sections properly assembled, there is a snug fit with the top of the bowl. However, this is only that; a snug fit and gravity keeping this shield in place. Heavy batter or a fuller bowl can relatively easily lift this shield up. I find the shield mostly keeps in just added flour which has a tendency to fly up. The chute on the shield is most helpful when gradually adding ingredients. You need to use a spatula, to get that last bit in the bowl though. Since this addition is so much later than my previous review, I would like to point out, both shield and mixer are still going strong.

Got this item for my mixer but it doesn't work as well as I thought it would. Of course, as my husband says, I can't boil water without destroying the kitchen so it could be just me...

I like that the shield comes apart in two pieces; I can store it inside the mixer bowls when not in use, I sometimes forget the shield before I start but can hook it on without having to remove the beater and, in two pieces, it fits in the dishwasher better for clean up.

However, it is tricky to hook it together if don't put it on 'before' you start mixing -taking it off is a breeze though. For me, the opening is still on the narrow side so that I usually spill down at least one side (especially flour) although not nearly as much as before. And often you have to push the ingredients off the spout into the bowl with a spatula.

If you are a super messy cook like me then this item may be good for you. If you're not then I wouldn't bother with it at all.

I used this "Pouring Shield" before my sister (who owned the kitchenAid mixer) moved out, and now I'm deciding whether to buy a KA mixer of my own, but in any case, I don't think I will purchase this "Pouring Shield". I ran into two problems with this product: 1, It comes apart too easily, which can be a nuisance when trying to lift it temporarily so as to reach in with a spatula to scrape down any unmixed ingredients from the sides of the bowl. And 2, it has an inexplicable gap in the lip at the back of the shield which allows stuff to spray out the back onto the mixer, the surrounding counter and the bottom of the cabinets over the mixer. (The gap seems inexplicable to me because it's not as if the edge of the bowl is anywhere near to touching the post of the mixer).

Now, my mother has had a KA mixer since I was in high school and it had a "Pouring Shield" that was in one piece (thus eliminating the falling apart problem) and it didn't have that gap in the lip at the rear, so it worked very well for our purposes. I wish the KitchenAid company would start making the old ones again.

I bought this because I am doing freezer meals now. I read the reviews on many stock pots and chose this one because it sounded like it was constructed well, and I wanted stainless steel. I wanted enough room to make many batches of stew at once or stock with several chickens. I am really happy with the quality, it has pretty smooth connections where the handles are attached, the handles feel good in my hand which is important because this is a heavy pot!!! The lid made funny sounds the first time I used it I was afraid it would shatter! But I think it was just adjusting the the handle. I have made 2 things in it so far and I love it! You will need a large storage spot, too big to leave on the stove. I keep mine in the linen closet.

So far so good for this behemoth! I just used mine for making a cooked brine and then submerged a 20 lb. turkey in it for our Thanksgiving Day feast which it accommodated easily. Worked and performed beautifully! The bottom is quite thick and sturdy. It is of tri-ply construction like its much more expensive brethren with a layer of heat conducting aluminum sandwiched between 2 layers of stainless steel. Also, like some of the MUCH MORE expensive stocks available on the market--this pot is not just made of "heavy guage" stainless steel, it IS 18/10 stainless steel. This is specified on the box it arrives in but for some reason is NOT listed on the product description here on Amazon which it should be! Why is that??? This was one of the key issues which caused me to repeatedly hesitate to commit to ordering it. If it had stated from the get-go that it is 18/10, I'm sure I would have ordered it immediately after doing only half as much research.

Anyway, I am more than pleased that I now at long last have a high-quality stock pot which will fill a variety of needs in my kitchen after having wasted money on a few cheaper stocks which only lasted once or twice before falling apart. Only one drawback that I can see so far: It is quite large but hey....it IS a 24 qt. stock pot so what do you expect? I DID absolutely make sure of course to measure the interior dimensions of my fridge BEFORE committing to ordering it as I knew it would be pointless to order it in my case if I couldn't find a way to squeeze it in there. I had to remove one of my side door compartments while putting it in and taking it out, but I expected that. Once it was in though, I was able to put the compartment back on the door and everything closed up just fine! So, if you are planning to use it to brine--just make absolutely sure you measure your fridge area first.

I will of course also have to store it in one of my closets when not in use as it will not fit anywhere in the storage kitchen areas---but that is a very small price to pay for such a high-quality kitchen item at a price that is a steel for what you get.

I see that a few others have commented on the looseness of the glass lid. Although I can understand the reason for this criticism, so far it really is not an issue in my short experience with it and seems purposeful in the overall design and construction. Perhaps this may be an issue later on, but I have so far used it for both hot and cold cooking and the lid has not been an issue at any time.

I received this pot as a birthday present. The pot arrived quickly and in perfect condition.

I have used the pot a half dozen times or so and I've had great success with it. I read the earlier review and would definitely advise caution. I read several websites and several cook books on clay cooking before I used the pot for the first time.

Following the instructions on the websites and cookbooks, I soaked the pot completely for 4 hours in lukewarm water. Now every time I use it, I soak again for 15 minutes just before use. I use a heat diffuser and heat the pot very slowly. As I understand it, this is necessary for most clay pots.

It takes a bit of extra time but definitely worth it to save the clay pot.

The only reason I'm giving the product 4 instead of 5 stars are the instructions. The details are very sparse. (I think a sentence or two in English) So you'd have to go out of your way to learn about caring for the pot properly.

The 6 quart pot is great. Very solid and, at that size, pretty big. In my experience, heating seems even on the cooking surface, and the lid is just as firmly built and fits well. I got this 4.5 pot as a replacement for a "non-stick" pot that had it's coating wearing off (and I've read some bad things about these non-stick coatings), so my requirements for a new pot were that it had to be stainless steel, had to have a single handed capable handle (as many pots this size have the two-handed short handles) and it had to be inexpensive. This pot fit the bill. Upon arrival I hand washed it and noticed that the welds used to fasten the long handle to the pot could be felt as very tiny pimples on the inside of the pot. I am concerned that the welding may eventually fail or rust, but have no proof as of yet. So that is why this review only gives it 3 stars. The pot came with a small sheet (5" x 5") of paper, "Care and cleaning", and "Good to know" notes. Some of the things they advise you that you should know: It's dishwasher safe. Don't add salt to your food until the water's boiling, otherwise you might get salt stains. Don't clean it with steel wool, cause it will scratch it. The "slightly concave" base gets flatter when heated, so don't clean it until it cools, otherwise it might warp. And so(obviously)don't let the food boil dry either. Don't use the pot for food storage, or your food might end up tasting metallic. (It's true, stainless steel continuously oxidizes.) And lastly, check the handle and knob for looseness before use. (hmm..)

The lid is OK too. Just wish they would make lids with a nob that doesn't get hot, instead of the metal handles they seem to always use now. But I suppose that would drive up the cost.

Note addendum 06/11/2011 almost 1 year later, pot holding up very well, upping rating to 4 stars. My wife has long forgotten the cleaning and caring notes, so we do have some salt stains. Eh. Other than that, it's in great shape.

Nice, tall sauce pan with more volume than most other sauce pans.

The thick bottom holds the heat extremely well, which is one of the major reasons I bought it. Super pricey pots and pans usually have 5-8 (or so?) layers of metal on the bottom which really helps to buffer from the stove, and helps cooks make less mistakes. The thick bottom on this one, though it is only 2 types of metal (I think) act in a similar way.

The lid is a little cheesy, small and thin, but it fits and does its job.

Several of my pots are Cuisinart Tri-Ply. However the 2 qt cuisinart is rather expensive so I opted for this one instead. It works great as a induction pot. Actually better than the cuisinart in some ways. Since only the bottom heats up the time to boil was actually faster. I timed one cup of water to boil. Times were. Cuisinart in 1 qt pot 1:43, Winco 2 qt 1:32, ( Max Burton Induction cooktop setting 5) Microwave (1000) Watt 2:00 minutes. Since the sides don't heat up as in triply it probably wont keep the food warm as long, once your remove it for the heat source, but for just getting something to boil fast this is great. Nice lid too.

I gave this bowl as a Christmas gift and the receipient really loved it. Instructions came with the bowl on how it can be used to keep your bread warm, which is pretty cool. The quality is superb. You can get cheaper, "knockoff" versions of this bowl, but I decided to pay a little more because 1) It's made in the USA and 2) the quality is great. I highly recommend this. I will be buying one for myself, but first I need to determine which color I want. BUY THIS NOW!!!

They are made from aluminium, which has been linked to cancer and Alzheimer's disease. I don't want to eat food cooked in an aluminium product. Other reviewers have said that it damaged their cooktop or burners on their stove and that the paint (color) came off prematurely (in only a few months). I wouldn't want this experience, either. However, my reason for returning the set was based upon health concerns with these items.

It is black inside, which is different from that of the other pans. However it's easy to use and clean! I am using it everyday with satisfaction!

I purchased this cast iron pizza set not sure how I would utilize it. I had also purchased a book Pizza on the Grill (excellent also). Well a few mistakes on my grilling meant I used my cast iron pizza pan and the great pizza peel. In fact the pizza peel in this set got my poor pizza off the grill with no problems. Then I finished cooking my pizza on the cast iron pan in the oven. It was perfect. Then I put on my pizza pan to cut up my home made pizza. The cast iron is so durable that next time I will cook with it on the grill giving me the best of both worlds. Easy to clean and great having the one side to slide the pizza off. Definitely a great purchase and the set is well worth it. I can not wait to make another pizza with it!!

This pizza grill is the best. I haven't used it in the oven yet, only the bbq, but bet it would be delicious. It has grooves over half so the pizza doesn't fall off, but is flat at one part to easily slide the pizza into the pizza plate. The pizza plate is also great, perfect to use with a pizza cutting wheel and you don't have the pizza sliding all over the place. I was worried it would get scratched but it didn't at all. And the wooden pizza paddle is cute. I would definitely recommend buying this.

I was so disappointed. I followed ALL instructions and still the black coating on the cast iron pizza pan flaked off in 2 spots, one worse than the other. I will try it again because I love the set and it fits perfectly on my grill.
