Among my assorted bird's beak paring knives, this one has a special place. There's no hiding place for any transfer of salmonella bacteria from poultry to produce, for this knife is made of a single piece of steel, and the solid handle has good weight. (Not all knives in this line have a solid handle.) Furthermore, it stands up to use and abuse, unlike any other knife I've ever had.

I bought mine in a specialty knife store (which has since gone out of business) close to ten years ago. After a nameless family member helped out in the kitchen, it seemed to have disappeared, and I mourned for this little knife. Turns out said family member had accidentally dumped it in the composter, along with a small mountain of vegetable waste. I boiled it and it rejoined the household.

Comfortable to hold, it does a variety of paring tasks well in the kitchen. Slipperiness mentioned in reviews of other knives in this line has not been a problem. Weight and balance are excellent. I like the completeness with which it can be cleaned.

If you have a kitchen or flower garden, you'll find good uses for it outdoors as well. I grow edible ginger, as well as the kind with flowers. For cutting the rhizome from the plant, this can't be beat. I also use it when it's time to thin the heliconias and strip old leaves off lilies.

In perusing reviews about other knives in this line, there appears to be concern about sharpening the Japanese-made steel. I use a Chantry knife sharpener and find it brings this knife back to an acceptable edge.

BOTTOM LINE: If you like the bird's beak style of paring knife, you are likely to find a use for this one. Amazon's price is excellent. I paid about twice the amount and would recommend it even at that price. If you've never tried a bird's beak paring knife, this one is reasonably priced and especially versatile for the reasons mentioned.

First thing to note, if you've not used a bird's beak before, is that this is a specialty function knife. Don't buy it before you get (at least) a few other kitchen knives, especially a parer/utility and chef's knife. Some relatives have come over and tried to use it in conjunction with a cutting board and quickly set it aside--which is fine because they were getting ready to slice a finger off.

I've used it for fluted mushrooms, which is still more work than I'd like, and it does the job fine. It also works well with paring hand-held fruits and vegetables, but not being an expert, I still prefer the conventional gizmos for that.

Where it excels for my wife and I is in cutting up poultry. We usually buy our birds whole. The only time we carve is Thanksgiving. The rest of the time, whether before or after cooking, the knife of choice is this Global bird's beak. It is a veritable joy to disencumber our fowl of their appendages and such. "A hot knife through butter" as the saying goes, applies perfectly here. A whole bird is easily sectioned into six to twelve pieces in seconds. A cleaver can work as fast, but we're more joint-finders than makers, and the small knife and no-cutting board approach works great for us--less space taken, less washing, less mess. The curved point and shorter blade make the non-cutting-board approach such a good choice--I sure wouldn't recommend this technique using those 10-inch "broadswords." Of course a good chef's knife can work well too--you gotta have them, but this Global is perfection.

Sharpening takes extra time and care, but it rarely needs it--keeping a razor edge for at least half a year with about once-per-week use.

Best Deals for Global GSF-17 - 2 1/2 inch, 6cm Bird's Beak Curved Peeling Knife

I'm not going to spend a lot of time discussing this knife as it is very much the same quality of knife that you would expect from Global. Just like all Global knives, it is a solid, one piece knife that has a razor sharp edge that stays sharp longer than most other brands of knives.

I originally bought this knife for use in culinary competitions, and it's one of those knives that really doesn't get a whole lot of attention, but sure is handy when you need it. I use it primarily to tourne potatoes. The shape is designed for that purpose, and the knife is therefore often described as a "tourne knife". Sure, you could use it to complete many different tasks from food to general house hold needs, but I wouldn't pay $30 to use it as an all purpose knife when there are so many cheaper options out there.

If you're less interested in the uses of the knife and more curious of the quality of the knife, feel free to read one of my other reviews on Global knives. I use them every single day at work, and I have very little interest in exchanging them for any other brand.

A nice solid kitchen tool. Works well, but the design limits the thickness and width of the meat that can be processed. Also, a larger capacity clamp to hold it to the countertop would be a welcome improvement.

This tenderizer worked great. I wondered because my steaks were cut a little larger then what the directions said it could handle but it went through just great and you could cut it with a fork when it was cooked.

I eargerly opened and immediately had a sinking feeling, no instructions, no parts list.

I had a slice of steak ready[aproximatelt 1/8 inch thick.] when it got into the teeth ,it stopped ,as

the thickness of meat made the gears spread and not mesh. Useless. cost more to return than toss.

I love this pan so much that after I purchased one, I purchased a second one. What I love about this fry pan is that it's deep enought not only to fry in, but you can use it as a braising pan. I like this pan much better than the Le Crueset brand. Yes, the pan is heavy, but it's cast iron. It's a great heat conductor and heats up quickly and retains the heat well.

Have not had this pan for long but used it a lot already both on the stove and in the oven works great for both. Already have a larger grenadine and really like this color.

Best Deals for Staub Cast Iron Frying Pan, 10 inch

The grenadine color is a deep wine red that is even more beautiful in person. I really love how easy it is to clean and the versatility, going from stove to oven, just be careful with handling as the edge grip and handle both get hot to touch directly so a kitchen towel/mitt is a necessity. Keep in mind this is an enameled cast iron and is quite heavy so you get a little workout lifting this pan too!

I love Staub cookware. Whenever I have a little extra money I purchase a piece, this being the latest. The heat is very even.

The actual size of the pan where the base hits the burner would be just over six inches. The website for Sitram measures the top of the pan at slightly larger. This is not an 8" pan. It does have rivets. I would have liked to have been shipped a new pan for the price I paid for it. When I peeled back the sticker on the bottom (be careful doing this as not to rip it), the sticker had been replaced previously. There was residue and paper with writing from the previous sticker that was removed under then newly replaced sticker. Not sure if this was the manufacturer's mistake or Amazon's but it was a bad one! No thanks, you can have it back.

That being said, I love the Sitram 11" Non-Stick Linox http://www.amazon.com/Sitram-11-Inch-Stainless-Steel-Frypan/dp/B00009A9W5/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1361836002&sr=8-1&keywords=sitram+nonstick (same as this one but larger) that I ordered before I purchased this one. That one cooks great. Wish it was a little heavier though but it has not warped on me or scratched up yet.

The reason we bought these frying pans was to replace the old ones we had. They were the same name brand frying pans which we purchased them eleven years ago. The coating was starting to come off them so that's why they got replaced. They are excellent frying pans to cook with and very easy to clean and handle.

It's a good size and shape for home brewing, but not a very heavy gauge steel. It weighs about 6 lbs. and has a "brushed" finish like you see in a stainless steel sink as opposed to shiny like silverware. The dimensions in the product description are inaccurate; it's approx. 13.5" wide x 13" tall (not counting the lid).

If you're looking to economize, this is a good choice. I'm sure it will work fine. If you can spare a little more, I'd go with something heavier gauge.

Good stock pot. It's construction is of high quality. The metal is thin, but this aids in rapid heat transfer into the pan. Not a lot of heat is lost to heating the pan. This is doubly helpful when you have to rapidly chill the wort for beer making, the pot won't retain lots of heat. Ideal for beer making.

My husband does the cooking and the 3 qt is his favorite size for cooking in, so I bought him a second one. We love the Calphalon pots and pans. They cook evenly and clean so easy.

Honest reviews on Calphalon Unison Sauce Pans

If I had studied the measurements before buying this pan, I would have realized that 4.8" is the size of the surface in contact with the burner. My smallest electric burner is 7" with a smaller ring of 6". In use, this would place the handle of the pan into a column of blazing heat rising from an over-sized burner. Ouch! I haven't seen an electric range with a burner smaller than 6".

You'd think I would give it fewer stars, since it is useless to me. I haven't even tried it after seeing the obvious burner mis-match. However! I have kept all the packaging and will surprise a friend who uses a gas stove. She will go nuts for it: a heavy pan with handles solidly riveted and a tight-fitting lid. And it is gorgeous, as you can see from the Amazon photo. With a gas stove, she can limit the size of the flame under the little pot so as to cook only the contents of the pot and not the sides and handle.

A quality sauce pan, although sometimes water drips from lid after washing and drying. No big deal but it surprises me when I get the pan out and it's wet on the bottom from the lid dripping.

Stanley 17oz. Classic Vacuum Food Jar
Customer Ratings: 4 stars

The Stanley 17 oz is perfect for lunch or a hike. The bottle looks well made and rugged like my older and larger stanley thermos. I was surprised however that this Stanley product is made in China. That does not take away from the quality but I have associated Stanley products with "Made in the USA". The other issue is that this bottle does not have a handle as decribed in the advertisement it has no handle at all. The circumferance is just manageable by a medium sized adult hand. A handle would be nice when you have several things to carry otherwise this bottle needs to be in a bag or other container.

As happened to another reviewer, I bought one of these, it worked fine for a couple weeks, then could not keep soup hot even for a couple hours. I noticed vertical hairline cracks around the lip of the bottom section, where it meets the main body. (I had hand washed it, no dish washer or microwave, etc.) I assumed those cracks ruined the vacuum barrier and any heat retention.

As I loved the size and apparent sturdiness, I tried another. When I bought it, the bottom piece was smooth and shiny. (I checked carefully.) Then in just a couple weeks the same thing happened, hairline cracks and no heat retention. The "cracks" appear to be thin vertical cuts, pretty uniform in depth and spacing. To me it looks like instead of working with precision parts, they ram on the bottom cap with pre-cut notches to make it fit (sort of), then cover over the thin cuts. I'm about to send the second one back (as I saved the receipt), but given the other reviewer's experience with the highly touted "lifetime warranty," I'm not optimistic.

Too bad a once reliable brand has gone cheap. Do not buy.

Best Deals for Stanley Classic Vacuum Food Jar 17 ounce/.5 liter

Yes, no handle and made in China. Other than that, this product keeps food hot. I found this thermos in Target with clearance price ($8.98) and I am very happy. It keeps food hot for hours. Regular price at Walmart and Target is $17.98.

Honest reviews on Stanley Classic Vacuum Food Jar 17 ounce/.5 liter

I've tried several thermos jugs for my kids' lunches but their soup would be barely warm by noon. This Stanley will keep soup HOT for at least 6 hours and very warm for longer than that. I have been very pleased with this purchase.

Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Stanley Classic Vacuum Food Jar 17 ounce/.5 liter

I bought this Stanley food jar in order to bring hot soup to work. As recommended, I conditioned it daily with hot water prior to filling it with soup, but in less than one week it would no longer keep the soup hot longer than one hour. I emailed Stanley regarding their "Lifetime Warranty" I received an automated response stating they would get back with me. I've waited two weeks, still no response. Returning the bottle to Amazon makes no sense considering postage and Amazon's restocking fee. Bottom line: This bottle proved to be junk, and Stanley's "Lifetime Warranty" is worthless.

Well it's not that old, but it is my go-to pot for soups, stews and braising large pieces. Stainless steel is the best because I can put it in the dishwasher. It heats well because of the All-Clad technology. High sides make it an excellent pot for frying. I've seen folks use cast iron Dutch ovens. I'm not willing to give up "dishwasher safe" for a pot that weighs a ton.

Don't let the price tag scare you this pot will become one of the main tools in your kitchen. And you'll be hooked and you'll go back for more.

A few years ago I went to a famous kitchen store to purchase Le Creuset, but they were out of the size I wanted and the saleslady suggested this All Clad dutch oven. She said, "I'm waiting for my own Le Creuset to wear out so I can get one of these."

I took her advice, and I use this pot ALL THE TIME. At least once a week I use it to roast a whole chicken in the oven. I use it for spaghetti, casseroles, soup, jambalaya anything. It works equally well in the oven or on the stove top. It's easy to clean even oven-baked-on food comes off with a little soaking and a scrubber sponge.

I don't have a lot of money but I considered this a lifetime investment that was worth every penny. I am so sick of the cheap and flimsy Chinese products that have saturated the market. It is SO refreshing to find cookware that is so well made, so versatile, and so good looking, too. I eventually purchased the 13" braiser which I also use all the time. It's a good complement to the dutch oven.

If you're thinking of getting one of these, just do it!

I recently bought a Swiss Diamond Saute Pan on the basis of a limited lifetime warranty and this claim in the product description:

"Swiss Diamond cookware features a revolutionary new non-stick incorporating diamond crystals ... to form a virtually indestructible non-stick cooking surface that will not crack, blister or peel. So durable its metal utensil safe."

After my experience using this pan I take issue with the terms "virtually indestructible" and "metal utensil safe" and feel that I have been deceived.

I've followed Swiss Diamond use and care instructions *to the letter* but not long after I started using the pan the surface became pockmarked. I would submit that the product is certainly neither "virtually indestructible" nor "metal utensil safe."

Interestingly their lifetime warranty does not cover "scratch marks," which is puzzling because they've just claimed it's "virtually indestructible" and "metal utensil safe." How is a "virtually indestructible" and "metal utensil safe" surface going to get scratch marks on it? Maybe they know something we don't?

Click Here For Most Helpful Customer Reviews >>

I am a serious cook, and I have tried just about every non-stick cookware available, and been disappointed--it either didn't work, or it didn't last.

The Swiss Diamond cookware is miraculous. It is so non-stick that you can almost get it dry with a shake or two-the water doesn't stay on it! I have probably used the pots and pans in my collection over 500 times, and nothing has taken more than a few swishes with a brush and a finish swipe with a plastic scrubber if I had cooked something on. And the non-stick covers the entire pan inside and out, except for the bottom that contacts the heat source.

One warning, which is made in the instructions: you must be careful to clean the pan thoroughly before using it again. Food left on the pan can cook into a permanent stain. This is true of every non-stick surface I have every used. My pans look like new after most of a year, and it hasn't taken more than a little extra care.

Unless you need to use very high heat, or just have to bang your pans around, I wouldn't buy anything else.

Best Deals for Swiss Diamond Nonstick Covered Saucepan

I really liked this pot when new. The distribution of heat is excellent, the nonstick coating was great, and it even had the neat feature that butter spreads out (usually on nonstick pots the butter sort of beads up. In this one it makes a lovely smooth coating you can fry on).

I still like the vented glass lid, which I have kept although I threw the pot in the trash.

After six months it was noticeably less "nonstick" needed a little extra work to get it clean.

After a year it was not "nonstick" at all.

After 15 months, it has nasty brown bits of unknown material that are very hard to clean off it. I don't know if it's burned food or some part of the pot itself that is peeling off yuck.

Sorry too expensive for a pot that only lasts a year. I'm back to my 20-year-old Revereware (but, alas, I see in the reviews that the Revereware brand is now cheesy Asian import junk instead of real quality American product. Sorry, I don't know what to recommend anymore, except maybe trying to find some old Revereware at Goodwill)

Update (2009) consider the ScanPan. It's working well for me.

Honest reviews on Swiss Diamond Nonstick Covered Saucepan

The saucepan is the perfect, rugged, non-stick addition to our better quality kitchen items. It is wide enough to get the most efficiency out of the small smooth top range element. The selective vent cover-knob deters boil-over. We keep it on the range because it is frequently used and is attractive.[[ASIN:B0006GAIDM Swiss Diamond Cast-Aluminum Nonstick 1-2/5-Quart Saucepan with Lid))

Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Swiss Diamond Nonstick Covered Saucepan

I destroy cooking pots. I'm especially lethal to the light-weight teflon lined variety you'll find at the supermarket. My secret is simple: I like to cook on high heat and I get easily distracted. That guarantees that I'll forget what's on the stove and produce a scorched (and warped) utensil. If a lightweight teflon pot lasts me two years, it's extraordinarily lucky.

I now own four (different) Swiss Diamond pots. And even my brutal habits leave them unimpressed. Despite regular disasters, they seem to shrug off what would vanquish a lesser pot. (Admittedly, I do avoid metal spoons and spatulas and clean them with non-abrasive means.) They have excellent non-stick characteristics, superb heat-spreading, and -love it -are approved for very hot oven use. Adding up to ESSENTIAL cooking tools!

And when you factor the price of regularly replacing "cheaper" pots, their cost becomes more than bearable.

HIGHLY recommended!

The 6 quart pot is great. Very solid and, at that size, pretty big. In my experience, heating seems even on the cooking surface, and the lid is just as firmly built and fits well. My biggest annoyance in the kitchen is thin, uneven pans and this is NOT one of them. Great solid pan for cooking any number of things.

I got this 4.5 pot as a replacement for a "non-stick" pot that had it's coating wearing off (and I've read some bad things about these non-stick coatings), so my requirements for a new pot were that it had to be stainless steel, had to have a single handed capable handle (as many pots this size have the two-handed short handles) and it had to be inexpensive. This pot fit the bill. Upon arrival I hand washed it and noticed that the welds used to fasten the long handle to the pot could be felt as very tiny pimples on the inside of the pot. I am concerned that the welding may eventually fail or rust, but have no proof as of yet. So that is why this review only gives it 3 stars. The pot came with a small sheet (5" x 5") of paper, "Care and cleaning", and "Good to know" notes. Some of the things they advise you that you should know: It's dishwasher safe. Don't add salt to your food until the water's boiling, otherwise you might get salt stains. Don't clean it with steel wool, cause it will scratch it. The "slightly concave" base gets flatter when heated, so don't clean it until it cools, otherwise it might warp. And so(obviously)don't let the food boil dry either. Don't use the pot for food storage, or your food might end up tasting metallic. (It's true, stainless steel continuously oxidizes.) And lastly, check the handle and knob for looseness before use. (hmm..)

The lid is OK too. Just wish they would make lids with a nob that doesn't get hot, instead of the metal handles they seem to always use now. But I suppose that would drive up the cost.

Note addendum 06/11/2011 almost 1 year later, pot holding up very well, upping rating to 4 stars. My wife has long forgotten the cleaning and caring notes, so we do have some salt stains. Eh. Other than that, it's in great shape.

Nice, tall sauce pan with more volume than most other sauce pans.

The thick bottom holds the heat extremely well, which is one of the major reasons I bought it. Super pricey pots and pans usually have 5-8 (or so?) layers of metal on the bottom which really helps to buffer from the stove, and helps cooks make less mistakes. The thick bottom on this one, though it is only 2 types of metal (I think) act in a similar way.

The lid is a little cheesy, small and thin, but it fits and does its job.

This 'sauce' pan works great for stovetop popcorn! I specifically searched for a pot for this purpose and am very happy with how this pot performs. Heats great, pops the corn in short order, and the lid stays on (so no oil splatters). If you get this pot, I think you'll like it too.

Several of my pots are Cuisinart Tri-Ply. However the 2 qt cuisinart is rather expensive so I opted for this one instead. It works great as a induction pot. Actually better than the cuisinart in some ways. Since only the bottom heats up the time to boil was actually faster. I timed one cup of water to boil. Times were. Cuisinart in 1 qt pot 1:43, Winco 2 qt 1:32, ( Max Burton Induction cooktop setting 5) Microwave (1000) Watt 2:00 minutes. Since the sides don't heat up as in triply it probably wont keep the food warm as long, once your remove it for the heat source, but for just getting something to boil fast this is great. Nice lid too.
