Several of you have blasted Pyrex concerning their "shatter" problem and stating they would now be switching to Anchor Hocking.

I suggest you read this first, particularly paragraph 5.I will repeat the relevant paragraph.....

"The End of Borosilicate the Start of Exploding Pyrex?

Corning currently licenses the use of the Pyrex brand name to World Kitchen LLC for sale in the United States, having sold its Pyrex cookware manufacturing to Borden KKR in 1997. The other main competitor in this field is Anchor Hocking Glass Co., which has made a similar soda lime silicate glass product for over 60 years. Both World Kitchen and Anchor Hocking now use the soda lime silicate glass instead of the original Pyrex borosilicate glass composition."

I read another article on MSNBC less than 2 weeks ago that devoted time to a discussion of the "instructions" for using this glass cookware and just how easy it is for those who fail to heed these instructions to end up with shattered glass.

I am not suggesting that all instances of shattered glass are user error but I personally know people who have misused this cookware and had it explode. The most common problem is attempting to roast a chicken or other meat by adding NO or insufficient liquid to the cookware. If the bottom of the cookware becomes dry, yes, it could explode. Glass cookware is not the same as a roasting pan.

One should either heed the instructions carefully or should consider not buying glass cookware at all. It is obvious our glass cookware, Pyrex or A-H, is not the same as years ago and the rules have changed.

I was diffident about making this purchase, considering some of the negative reviews about the so called "new Pyrex" and its propensity for breakage, or as some people so graphically described it, explosions. Eventually though, it was the competitive price point, the covers, the sizes, and of course, the brand that made me risk it.

And I'm glad I did. I've been using it for a solid month or so now, and pretty frequently at that. No breakage, no damage, no cracking, no overheating, no destroyed meals or lacerated body parts. Just good, evenly heated, food. And a nice looking cooking utensil.

About the covers not fitting, again, something I did not experience. Maybe I got lucky, I like to hope that happens some times, but if my experience were any indication, it might be worth taking the risk. Shipped quickly and in perfect condition.

P.S: I hope I haven't jinxed it.

Purchased this two months ago. Baked with it twice. But today, while cooking a chicken in a conventional oven the glass baking dish exploded into many pieces. What a shock. My mother used Pyrex and never had this happen. Just grateful it didn't explode around the kids. After this happened, found it online as a common occurrence. Pyrex should not be able to sell their exploding bakewear to unsuspecting consumers.

Followup: Pyrex has a designated hotline taking phone calls from distressed customers. The person is nice, compassionate and sent me extra items besides replacing the dish. However,

I don't think there should be ANYTHING in our kitchen that could shatter glass everywhere without warning and possibly injure someone. They have known about this for a long time.

Honest reviews on Pyrex Easy Grab 4-Piece Value Pack, includes 1-ea 3-qt Oblong

I was quite pleased when I came across this two pack. I've yet to be disappointed by the quality of Pyrex products and I felt that being able to purchase two casserole dishes for under $20 was a nice deal. One thing that initially put me off about them was the unusual design of the plastic lid, but after one use with the 3qt oblong made me realize that it does a good job of what it was designed for. Keeping things in. They do tend to sit fairly close to the top of the casserole, if you are making something that fills the dish and is particularly messy, you may want to keep that in mind. In general, I'm happy with the purchase.

First use of this "Pyrex" 3 Qt Oblong purchased through Amazon involved preparation of a simple dish of scalloped potato with pork chops. The "handle" section of the dish made it too large for the 3 quart oblong to fit in my large microwave. Had to use an old Pyrex 3 quart dish to do the microwave cooking. Put the 2 quart in the pre-heated oven on bake at 375 degrees bake the chops and finish off the meal preparation. At approximately 5 minutes, the sound from the oven, a small explosion, told us all was not well. We ended up with a chunky glass scalloped potato mix coating the racks and interior surfaces of the oven. My old Pyrex dishes and bowls have been used in the same manner with never a hitch. Perhaps I mis-understood and this "Pyrex" product is just an expensive substitute for tupperware and intended for storage use in the refrigerator only!

These pans are advertised as "stainless steel" but are coated with an aluminum finish. They are not sturdy chef-style pans, but rather flimsy and thin. They bend under change of temperature to the point of twisting. The picture and description were hard for me to see these disadvantages, so they were a disappointment from opening the box. I will say that they come clean easily for a non non-stick pan. Also they are shiny.

Wow, talk about false advertising. I went ahead and purchased these despite reviews claiming these were flimsy; and I shouldn't have. They are very flimsy, not the heavy gauge they are advertised to be. They bend and bow when held with just one hand, which would risk cookies, etc. ending up on the floor; just not sturdy at all. They are advertised to be 18/10 stainless and they are not. I applied a magnet to the surface of each, and the magnet held on tightly. Magnets do not stick to 18/10 stainless. These are 18/0 lower quality stainless. I can find baking sheets of similar quality (18/0) at Dollar Tree for $1, and they are more sturdy than these! I was looking for an 18/10 heavy gauge cookie sheet, these are falsely advertised as being such, but they are not. I am returning them and looking for something else.

I am constantly cooking and I appreciate a nice quality pan made out of materials that I would want to eat off of. These pans have performed nicely. They aren't super sturdy, so don't cook your heavy items on them, but they do well for lighter foods. Clean up is a breeze, but with stainless steel, it always is.

Honest reviews on Deluxe 2 (two) Stainless Steel Bakeware Set with Jelly Roll Pan

I returned these pans after baking on them and noticing that silver metal came off on my white paper towel I wiped them with. Stainless steel should not do this. These are very poor quality and not healthy to bake on.

Looked very good, shiney and nice. But very flimsy. Not what I wanted, I think it would probably warp in the oven.

When I bought my calphalon kettles, I failed to notice that the set included a 5 quart dutch oven which was smaller than I was used to but serviceable.

I searched on line and found the Simply Calphalon 7 quart dutch oven at a good price AND got free shipping.

It is everything it promised to be even cooking, easy cleaning, clear cover to monitor soups and stews.

Problem? I was cooking 5 quarts of food and it fed my family...now I cook 7 quarts and we eat that too. Maybe I need to go low fat...

Dutch Ovens... there are plenty out there to look at and chose from. This particular Make and Model "fills the bill" nicely, so to speak. You can use it for unlimited purposes, the handles will not melt (they have a special rubberized wrapping), the Pot & Glass Top are very well made of Calphalon. Lastly the Pot cleans up easily because of its material, and the product is made in America. Hence this product is a win-win in our household, do not be afraid to purchase this product.

This is a prefect size pot for our family, and is getting significant use. We eat a lot of soups and stews. Something we really appreciate are the insulated handles that allow you to pick up the pot, while hot, without using oven pads or mitts. A terrific kitchen tool at a very good proce. We plan on extending our purchases of Calphalon cookware.

Honest reviews on Simply Calphalon Nonstick 7-qt. Dutch Oven & Cover

I've made several meals in my Dutch Oven and I've been very pleased. No matter how thick the sauce is, nothing has stuck to the pan. I made a cream of turkey soup last night and when I poured it into a bowl, the pot was nearly clean. It's a medium weight not flimsy and not too heavy to handle. I use it on the top of the stove and in the oven. I would definitely recommend this Dutch Oven.

This is a nice high-capacity pan at a good price.

Pros:

* Insulated handles

* Large capacity

* Lightweight

* The non-stick coat really works, and seems durable

* The lid is nice and fits pretty well

Cons:

* The insulation doesn't cover all of the handles, so if you're not careful with your fingers, it's easy to get burned

* The box didn't include any user manual, care guide or warranty information all you get is the box, the pan, and some plastic wrap

Cheap Country Cabin 11-1/2-Inch Round Skillet

Country Cabin 11-1/2-Inch Round Skillet
Customer Ratings: 4.5 stars

I bought this pan locally from Wally World at a pretty cheap price. The surface is rough and a little uneven in one spot, at least my example is uneven, but it is a very heavy, sturdy feeling pan and the surface will smooth out eventually. The pan does function as well as any other cast iron pan I've used. Lodge Logic pans, as far as my experience goes, are always quite smooth and perfect but hard to get where I am living unfortunately. This pan is like a reliable old truck with a weaker paint job compared to the Cadillac that is the Lodge pan.

On the plus side: the Country Cabin 11.5 inch pan does have a more rustic feel and a cooler design with the handle thumb groove and overall appearance. With time I will make it a work of art and I'm sure it will last forever as I am very conscientious in regards to my cast iron care. If looking for perfection buy Lodge.

Cheers!

Review of Le Creuset Enameled Cast-Iron 2-Quart Heart Casserole, Red

Le Creuset Enameled Cast-Iron 2-Quart Heart Casserole, Red

I've used my Le Creuset enameled cast iron cookware for over 10 years; I'd be lost without it. The excellent heat retention and even heat distribution allow you to cook over low-medium heat; you'll save energy and your cookware will last longer. But who am I kidding?--I bought my Le Creuset pans because they're pretty and oh so French! That they're energy efficient, sturdy, and easy to clean are just bonus points.

Although I own a set of the cobalt blue pans, the heart shaped red pan with lid is my favorite Le Creuset piece. It would make a great Mother's Day or Valentine's Day gift; then again it would make a wonderful present to yourself!

I have collected all of Le Creuset's fruit and vegetable shaped cast iron enameled casseroles. In my 40+ years of cooking these casseroles are at the top of my list for beauty and functionality. They are beautiful to display on a table or on a kitchen counter and very practical in cooking delightful casseroles, soups, stews and other wonderful dishes. The color that they can add to a kitchen brightens every vist there. The exterior and interior enamel coating is very durable and easy to clean. I have cooked a multitude of dishes in these casseroles and have found them to be excellent in heat conduction and preventing "hot spots". The wider and lower shaped casseroles are a little better in spreading the heat.

The warranty against defects of 101 years will certainly last beyond my expected needs but it is nice to know that I have the protection since these are not inexpensive purchases.

The comments of guests served from these casseroles is always positive and never fails to bring a smile to my face.

There is a drawback to these whimsical cookers and that is the rim of both the top and bottom of the casseroles. There is no enamel on these rims and they can rust if not dried immediately after hand washing. They are dishwasher safe but I do recommend that you hand wash and dry immediately. I also recommend that you let them sit out for an hour or so to air dry before storing them.

When wet this casserole can be very slippery and the handles on the bottom and top help in preventing dropping them. Be really careful!

Finally, closely inspect your casserole when it arrives. My first garlic casserole had a two inch crack in the enamel. I did not have to contact Le Crueset since Amazon.com immediately sent a replacement to me and had the defective item picked up at my home at no charge. I commend them for standing behind the products they sell.

The single best pots for doing rich chicken dishes and the like. Conducts heat perfectly, well-balanced and very easly to clean. So many great meals have emerged from these pots that I tend to cook more frequently, especially the more slow-cooking or complex dishes.

I inheirited one of these pots and then bought another. Since then I have excused all similar imitations from the kitchen.

If I had to equipt my kitchen with 3 cooking pots/pans, this would come right after the skillet and sauce pan.

Honest reviews on Le Creuset Enameled Cast-Iron 2-Quart Heart Casserole, Red

Of all the 2 quart Le Creuset specialty pieces (pumpkin, tomato, etc.) this was the one that caught my eye. I resisted it several times at a nearby Le Creuset shop, but when they discounted it so that the price was about what I'd pay on Amazon, I gave in. I only wish I would have bought it sooner.

Unless your kitchen is totally austere and devoid of all decor, this is one piece you will want to keep out at all times. You cannot look at it without smiling and just feeling good. As far as actually using it, it has all the wonderful qualities for which Le Creuset is so well-known. Whether on the stove or in the oven, you'll love the even heating and the smooth enamel finish. When it's time to serve on the table, it becomes a conversation piece as well. At 2 quarts, it's a great size for small recipes. Clean up is fast and easy.

So, beauty and function in a quality piece of cookware, and all for a reasonable price. What more could one ask for?

I have had this pot since about 2001. I bought it for the macaroni and cheese review. I don't remember how much I paid for it, but it has been worth it surprisingly. I admit I only used it to make mac and cheese the first few years. Then I found out it makes brussel sprouts, spaghetti sauce, and now RICE, perfectly. I actually reach for this pot on somewhat of a weekly basis now and it still looks brand new. The handles are very ergonmically useful. It holds an air-tight seal while cooking, so rice cooks up perfectly without spilling over on the stove. Stores food well in any temperature.

This is a hand me down pot for the future generations. Friends always compliment me on the cuteness of this pot as it sits on the stove during cookings. I am glad I bought it. It cooks 3 cups of rice and surprisingly mac and cheese is not so bad in such a deep small pot. It fills nearly to the brim without boiling over, since it is air tight.

If you do not treat this pot delicately and just use it for anything including side vegetables, you will find that it is very useful. There is hardly a scratch on mine and I consider it everyday ware now. Hope this helps!

What I like most about this pot is that it has a copper bottom, sandwiched between two other layers of metal. I think that copper is the BEST metal for even heat distribution. Also, I like that it's a big pot that doesn't have a huge base that would overwelm the stovetop. (The diameter and height are each 9 inches.)

Prime Pacific 4 Cup Egg Poacher
Customer Ratings: 4 stars

I confess I am an egg poaching addict. Among the egg poachers I have tried and experimented with are the pan, cups and lid style, microwaveable units, and those products that utilize the use of 10-inch and 12-inch frying pans. I even tried a funky style where one had to use a knife blade or spoon handle to lift the egg tray to and from the pan; it worked though. Each of these products gave me good poached eggs to a point. All were lacking in finished product desirability or method of operation. Some gave eggs that were on the thin side. Others popped out eggs a bit uncooked or overcooked or one of each, especially the microwaveable units. The best styles I used were the pan, cups and lid combos. And the best of these styles for the price, in my opinion, is this Prime Pacific 4 cup Egg Poacher. Following the instructions, with some heat and time adjustments, will get you nice looking, delicious poached eggs almost every every. (After all, sometimes chefs make errors you know.) The amount of water called for in the instructions is a bit much in my opinion; I reduce it to half and get the same results. I must confess I only make two eggs at a time, so the amount of water called for could take into consideration that four eggs are being made.

Stoves vary in performance, considering heat sources and settings. I use a gas stove, and I bring the water to a boil in the pan using the highest setting. Then I turn the heat to medium high and place the egg tray with its egg filled cups in the pan using the convenient center knob holder on the tray. Over the tray I place the see-through lid. From this point I time 5-6 minutes, after which the eggs are done on the soft side; a longer time will make them hard boiled and good for salads. (Yes! No more shelling eggs for salads poach them instead.) You don't need to use butter or cooking spray in the cups for the eggs to drop out nicely with a nudge of a small rubber spatula, because the cups have a non-stick coating. But I put a dab of butter in the cups anyway. (Old habits are hard to break.) Your timing might be different from mine, taking your stove's performance into consideration.

The Prime Pacific 4 Cup Egg Poacher pan is deep, and this is a plus when your need a small pan for making gravies or sauteing. The product is well constructed ready to give years of good service. I spent a lot of money on egg poachers, and this one is the best of the bunch that came into my kitchen. The other egg poachers I had are now gone to friends and relatives. I am keeping this one for good. I am addicted to it.

Pan was shipped quickly and put to use immediately. Watch the dimensions as it is a wide, shallow pan. But it heats up rapidly, cooks beautifully, and cleans up easily so I've been making pan meals non-stop since getting this... I love it. Highly recommend.

I needed to replace my existing pots and pans as they were all mismatched and well used (and not in a good way). The non stick was starting to lift so I researched a long lasting, hygenic alternative and the Calphalon Commerical Hard-Anodized products are what I've invested in. I'm very happy with all the pieces they cook well and clean up easily. The lids heat up a little over time, but I can cope with that.

Best Deals for Calphalon 5-qt. Commercial Hard-Anodized Saute Pan.

It is for good reasons that the Calphalon Commercial Hard Anodized Saute Pan line has endured many years. The performance is exemplary and the durability amazes me. My 5-qt and 3-qt pair have been in use since 2000.

WHAT'S GOOD ABOUT THIS SAUTE PAN?

* The THICK GAUGE absorbs and evenly spreads heat for even cooking, excellent searing, sauteing and simmering. The thickness, especially in large saute pans like this, helps to protect against warping. Using medium heat is all you need because the heat transmission is so efficient in pans of this thick gauge. With medium heat, provided that you always have food in the pan when on a burner, you will never have a warped pan. Many home cooks are not wise to this so they warp their fine pans out of ignorance then complain about it. A chef would just roll eyes on this one. This thick gauge is well worth what you pay for it.

* The ANODIZED SURFACES, inside and out, as opposed to bare aluminum found in restaurant kitchens, prevents the aluminum from discoloring and staining. Such cosmetic considerations are of no interest in a restaurant kitchen, but would collect many unfavorable responses from amateur home cooks displaying their fancy cookware to visitors, and would garner the same response on consumer review sites.

* The FORKED STAINLESS STEEL, STAY-COOL HANDLES. Along with the poor heat transmission properties of stainless steel, the handle is forked where it meets the pan so heat is dispersed even more than otherwise. The result of this classic design is that the handle stays quite cool even during higher than average heat.

* THE LID SEALS WELL for simmering. In that regard, the recessed lip of the lid does help.

* THE ABSENCE OF A PLASTIC NONSTICK COATING is a real benefit when it comes to searing and browning food (which non-stick does so poorly), and this also helps to build the fond, the crust of flavor-saturated particles that kick flavor up so wonderfully, especially when making gravy or sauces after the searing or sauteing is done. Clean up is average though not difficult as the anodized surface is not porous. The surface is NON non-stick coated...just soak the pan awhile and no problem. Inexperienced cooks complain about its "not non-stick qualities." They do not get it. It's true folks, no businessperson ever lost money underestimating the intelligence or inexperience of some of the public.

WHAT'S NOT SO GOOD ABOUT THIS SAUTE PAN?

* Earlier I mentioned that plain, not-non-stick surfaces are preferred for proper sauteing. Well, that is so true, but there is another critical issue to be addressed. DARK PANS ARE THE WRONG COLOR FOR SAUTEING. A dark surface does not allow you see see and monitor how dark the crispy, flavor concentrated food food particles, called the "fond", are developing in order to prevent burning and ruining the fond.In fine cooking, you do NOT want to burn those little culinary jewels. Well, if your saute pan has a dark surface it is difficult to monitor fond development so burning is hard to avoid. I was a new home cook years ago when I bought these pans. I learned the hard way. If you never care about the perfect fond or quality sauce-making, then these pans are just excellent. But they are not for me. You can do better.

The solution? Some years ago I bought an 11.3" diameter, 4-qt capacity saute pan made of all stainless steel on both sides, sandwiching an inner aluminum core, i.e., a cladded saute pan. It has a light colored, somewhat shiny surface, not black, so now I can clearly see if the fond is about to turn from brown to light black and remove the fond from the pan at that critical point. This concept works the same when you use a light colored roasting pan to make gravy or sauce. I will not reveal the brand of that A class cladded pan here as I do not want to be considered biased, which I am not. I buy what works best and lasts longest. So that is my experience, people.

As a result of my little dissertation, perhaps you can appreciate why I have awarded this fine quality saute pan only four stars. That's the facts, Jack.

I hope this was a help to you. If you have questions, please ask in the Comments section below, and I will try to be of help to you.

I purchased this lid because my old glass lid trapped used cooking oil between the metal rim and the glass, where it could not be removed. This lid does not have any such problem. The metal is thin, so the lid is fairly light, weighing 0.7 lbs. It should fit pots and pans with an inner diameter between 9.5 inches (the diameter of the lid's recessed portion) and 10.5 inches (the lid's overall diameter). Overall, this is a very good product, the one downside being that the handle becomes too hot to touch after a few minutes.

This is a simple 2-layer stainless steel cover with a riveted handle. The handle attachment is extremely secure, but the shop-end of the rivet looks like it was deformed with a hammer far from a nice round factory rivet look. Fits a 8" pot perfectly. The inside diameter of the lip is 7-1/2", the outside is 8-3/16". The surface is brushed metal, but not mirror-polished, has some scratches and discolorations out of the package. Made in the USA.

This cover fits the classic Lodge frying pan so well that you can vent out of one if the pan's pouring spouts if you want to. I would have liked thicker material but it's OK and looks good. Made in Minnesota USA!

Honest reviews on Nordic Ware Restaurant Brushed Stainless-Steel Lid

I bought a Nordic Ware Texas Skillet on markdown at the local big box store. It did not come with a lid. While the pan is described as 12". the inside diameter of the pan is about 11 and 7/8, and the outside diameter to the edge of the curled rim is about 12 1/2. I wondered if this lid would fit.

Ift fits like a dream.

The lid has a flat rim about 1/2 inch wide giving the lid an outside diameter of about 12 7/8".

You can see from the picture the dome of the lid is set below the flat rim. On the underside the protruding circle of the dome is about 11 3/8"

As long as the outside rim-to-rim diameter of your pot is not a lot bigger than 12" (to let the flat rim of the lid rest on the rim of your pot)

And the inside diameter of your pot is not smaller than about 11 7/8" (so the dipping part of the lid can fit inside your pot

It will fit great.

This is the same lid design I got in my Nordic Ware Restaurant 7-Piece Cookware Set. The largest lid in that set is 10 inches, based upon similar measuring technique. This 12" lid is also stainless steel, made in USA, and slightly less polished than the Restaurant lid.

These are the greatest lids. They sit flat on the pot. They do not rattle or shake. Instead of building up steam and boiling over they let steam out so evenly you cannot see it. The kitchen gets less steamy. The dropped dome must be part of it.

I love it. Everyone should have a set of these lids.

Made in USA! Pass it on!

http://www.amazon.com/Nordic-Ware-Restaurant-Cookware-Skillet/dp/B0001V4DD8/ref=pd_bxgy_k_text_b

The pan is great but the lid is kind of flimsy by comparison. It did not fit well when it arrived but I realized it was slightly bent and was able to bend it with my hands and now it fits perfectly. It was not worth the hassle of returning for another one since it was so easy to unbend but that just indicates the thin metal.

This is a cheaply-made product. Its photograph in the Amazon website does not reflect its actual, and very poor, quality. It has a flimsy bottom so it does not conduct heat efficiently; thin sides; and a top handle that will burn your fingers after a few minutes on the fire.

I am very impressed with this item. Super quality materials, definitely has eye appeal. Anticipating many years of service. Works like magic on my Induction Cook Top. 65 years cooking experience. Thanks to Amazon.com for a great deal at a great price.

3rd day update

First task was to cook some rice, that was a success.

The pan cleaned up nicely.

Second task was to cook some pasta. Horror story, I guess the salt in the water caused the pan to spot and no attempts at cleaning it worked. Nothing was burnt on or stuck to the pan bottom.

So the very impressed is gone and the quality of the item has now been downgraded. Although it has eye appeal I would not recommend this product to anyone. Boy I jumped the gun on this one.

I've been using this for months now after getting rid of my Teflon coated products. It has a quality weight to it and and still looks great. I plan on going back to this brand to complete my set. Highly recommended.

I bought this pot as something inexpensive I could use everyday. It has exceeded my expectations and it is a wonderful product.

After first time use and washing the pan, black specs were found at the bottom of the pan. I was highly upset about this. It looked like it was a 50 year old pan. All I did was cook some rice.Kinetic Classicor Stainless-Steel 3-Quart Saucepan with Lid

This is absolutely a great item for making eggs or omlets. I have mine over a year now, and it looks like it's in the same condition it was in when I bought it. I have the 8-inch model which is the perfect size for eggs and omlets.

Even though it says "Non-Stick," I always spray Pam, or another cooking spray before I cook.

This item is a must-have for any kitchen.

This is a great pan. I got it a a lower price and was well worth the money. I love the rubber grip handle, the ease of cleaning the pan. I liked the bottom surface, it seemed to cook food evenly. Ive only had the pan for a month, it doesnt seem to be a a heavy duty pan. So I wonder how long it ill last. Will post again if it doesnt hold up.

Very nice pan. However, the ceramic coating is so thin and britle, that it hardly takes anything to chip it. I recieved my pan with tiny chipping on the top edge where the coating ends. I rubbed my finger across the edge and a couple ceramic chips came off. The pan may have been a defective unit but the ceramic coating is an automated chemichal process. Meaning, the very thin and very brittle coating is not going to last long at all. There are tricks in the manufacturing process that can improove this issue but evidently not on this pan. Sadly, there is no replacement or competitor for this design, in ceramic coating, that I found so far.
