The original "French White" Corningware was made of Corning's famous pyroceramic glass, which could be used on the gas stove, put directly in the freezer, put under the broiler right from the freezer, and oh yes, also used in a microwave. And it was very unlikely to shatter if dropped. If you pounded on it with a hammer and nail you might have gotten it to break.

When World Kitchens bought the license from Corning, they decided to halt production of a line of cookware that would take anything and last forever, and dupe customers, especially brides, into thinking the stoneware "French White" was the same thing as the wonderful French White pyroceramic cookware previously available to their mothers and sisters.

The pattern is very attractive and can be used with any decor, and they do offer many sizes, but this stuff is not, repeat, really not, what people mean when they say "Corningware."

Le Creuset can do most of the above mentioned, but it being metal you cannot use it in the microwave. Stoneware cannot go on top of the stove, and repeated trips from the freezer to the oven will eventually cause it to craze and crack. And stoneware will also chip, and break if dropped, etc. Pyrex glassware cannot go on the gas stove although you can take it from the freezer to the oven, and also microwave it.

The only product which could do anything was pyroceramic, and World Kitchens has chosen to remove it from the market because it is "too good."

They have recently brought back a few of the old square shapes, with the Cornflower, or plain white, calling it "vintage," but the French White shape is not making a reappearance yet. If you want it, email them and ask for it!

Meanwhile, don't buy this stuff. Get Le Creuset for cooking and roasting (yes it is expensive but it lasts forever and cooks beautifully), and reheat things in Pyrex in the microwave.

You can't go wrong with CorningWare. Dishwasher safe, oven safe, freezer safe and microwave safe. I have several other pieces of CorningWare, but I wanted the roaster it is perfect for whole hams, smaller turkerys, chicken etc. Cooks beautifully, doesn't stain and you don't need additional serving pieces, just bake and serve in the same dish. Plus, the French White line is a crisp white and is heavier than some of their other styles.

This is a good-sized dish that cooks food very well. However, it is REALLY REALLY hard to clean! Especially the lid. You have to scrub the heck out of the thing!

Honest reviews on CorningWare French White 2 Piece 4-Quart Covered Oval Roaster

We had received one of these as part of a set about four years ago. My wife dropped and broke that one a week ago, and within 30 minutes of cleaning up the mess, we had ordered this replacement--that's how much we like it. We regularly double recipes, and this is the perfect size to double casseroles. My only gripe is that there's not a plastic cover for it like the other (smaller) CorningWare dishes in this series.

I have real corning ware from 40years ago. It still is in perfect shape. I bought this item because it was a useful size. It cracked within four months. I thought perhaps it was a fluke and made the mistake of ordering another. That one cracked in three months. Never again. These made in China pots are total junk.

Cheap Simplex Heritage Gas Tea Kettle, Chrome

I've had this kettle for about 7 years and I felt compelled to give it my" thumbs up". I moved recently and had to leave my kettle behind. I am looking for a temporary replacement but none of the kettles I've looked at seemed to have all of the qualities I look for: design, whistle, cool handle, quick boil, no-fuss whistle removal, and capacity. Well, this kettle has it all (it's not modern, but the design is simple and timeless)! The whistle is in the spout, so there's nothing to remove when you pour ( this doesn't affect the water flow). Boils water super-fast! The handle is always cool (wood). Love it! Of course, it is a bit pricey, but it will last you a lifetime.

Bought this to replace our Chantal Classic 1 4/5qt tea kettle. First of all, it's absolutely beautiful from every angle. A really gorgeous kettle, classic curves, stunning!!! A true timelessness, like having the Queen Mother in your kitchen, boiling up a spot of tea. We've gotten compliments from everyone, from Al the plumber to the newly married Google exec (who was a bit wistful at having recently chosen the Chantal).

Next point of comparison, function: the kettle has a turned wooden handle and can therefore be picked up off the boil without a potholder, a difference that we appreciated after the Chantal. Also the whistle is built into the lid, and will never need to be replaced, which is why we got rid of the Chantal (it had a gorgeous train-like harmonic whistle, but the reed-fitting costs $20+ to replace, and stopped working after a few months). After using it whistle-less for a period of time we decided to go with a replacement that would save us money by using less energy rather than spending money buying replacement parts. Also, the Simplex is a breeze to keep shiny and clean, buffs clean with a dry or damp cloth, cleans up like brand-new even after sullen teenagers have splatter-fried foods on the neighboring burner. By comparison, the Chantal charcoal grey enamel required it's own bullet-point on my to-do list when needing to be cleaned. In addition this kettle holds a generous amount of water, enough to brew up four giant mugs of tea or fill a large french coffee press with water left over for a cup or two of hot cocoa for the kids.

Finally, energy efficiency. Before tossing the Chantal into the Good Will box I conducted a test to see if the coils on the bottom of the new kettle really did make a difference: The Simplex boiled the same amount of water on the same flame setting in exactly 3/4th's of the time; 6 minutes vs. 8 minutes for the Chantal.

Oh, and by the way, even the teenagers give the new kettle two sullen thumbs up. I haven't told them yet that "Good Will Box" is really a euphemism for "stuff you get to take when you leave for college."

I am extremely pleased with this tea kettle. I have had many whistling tea kettles over my lifetime, but I definitely like this one the best of all. Aesthetically, it is a beautiful tea kettle and has an old fashioned charm. It feels very solid and not flimsy at all. In the past, I have had tea kettles that once they whistle and you go to pour the hot water into your cup or tea pot, they sputter all over the place -sometimes even splashing your hands a bit! This tea kettle pours very nicely once it whistles. It has been very satisfying all around -I'm pleased.

Honest reviews on Simplex Heritage Gas Tea Kettle, Chrome

The Simplex Chrome Whistling Tea Kettle is the fastes boiling kettle that I have ever found. It has a large capacity and is, to my eye, extremly attractive. The whistle is loud enough to be heard through out the house. I believe that the all copper version is a little faster to come to a boil, but as copper has to be cleaned constantly to look good, I'd rather wait the extra few moments to achieve a boil for the "wash and ware" chrome model. This extremly well made kettle has been in constant use in my home for 18 years. It has paid for it's self may times over with it's quick to boil design and when the time comes to replace this old friend I will pay what ever price I have to replace it with another Simplex Chrome Whistling Gas Stove Tea Kettle.

I just got the first run of the 2012 back-in-production simplex kettles, and its quite beautiful out of the box. Honestly, I want to love this kettle but something is not right. My family had the traditional copper simplex kettle as a kid and I immediately sensed this new make (coated with chrome) feels lighter. It also sounds like a toddler learning to whistle, lid tight down, even with a little more heat than you should use according to the directions. I remember the original piping loud and clear, and this is not close. Nothing I see explicitly says it is "Made in England," a selling point, either on the kettle or it's packaging. Given the hassle and wait getting this through Amazon, I'm not sure I dislike it enough to return it, but for the money I am not thrilled. Sorry.

bought to replace plastic knob on a new pot. Perfect fit , looks great, no worry about high heat. Came fast and well packed

Best Deals for Le Creuset Stainless Steel Large Replacement Knob

I bought these Le Creuset replacement knobs for each of my two large and medium sized Chasseur cast iron casserole dishes/dutch ovens after the plastic ones failed and cracked in a hot oven. I couldn't find genuine Chasseur ones to replace them, so gave these a go and they work brilliantly. Perfect fit through the existing hole in the cast iron lid and fastened with a steel screw, and means that the dutch ovens are now able to be used in very hot ovens without worrying about the handles. The heat transfers through the knob more than the plastic ones obviously, so you need to use a mitt or tea towel to take the lid off, but they serve their purpose very well.

The knobs should now last as long as my cast iron dutch ovens will.

Honest reviews on Le Creuset Stainless Steel Large Replacement Knob

I've replaced all my Le Creuset knobs with these. Why they didn't use these to begin with is a mystery to me. Added plus: they look a lot better than the originals. Only caution: make sure you get the right size. There are 3 that I'm aware of and at the time when I ordered mine I hadn't found the largest one yet. Consequently, had to order more Le Creuset pots and bakeware to match the medium knobs!

We tried so many pressure cookers over the years as Indian Cooking demands heavy use of pressure cooking for making lentil soups and curries. We even tried few models from India but none could last more than a few years. Either they have problems with safety valves, handles, or they would become loose too often that requires tightenening of handles. If they last well, they were too bulky and takes almost forever to open and close the lid. Most annoying of all, they all make crazy sound that scares both my kids.

Kuhn Rikon pressure cookers sure have expensive prices but once you see them and feel them, you will find every reason to agree that they are well worth the price. This particular 2 set model is so lovely that my wife decided to get rid of most of her cookware as they both compliment each other so well. They can be used for almost everything we cook for our daily needs. The lids are interchangeable. This makes it so convenient to pressure cook veggies and lentils and then continue to use it with glass lid to make the final curry without having to transfer the cooked veggies and lentils to another cookware to make the curry. You can cook meat much faster and tastier without having to marinate for long.

The small one is so convenient if you have small babies and would like to feed them fresh boiled veggies, rice, or lentils. It saves lot of cooking time and the cook book that comes with it is wonderful. It gives you so many nice and simple receipes for everyone.

Couple of our guests got so impressed with this that they bought it right away from Amazon.com without waiting to get an incredible deal for it in their Amazon.com GoldBox like I did.

Excellent set, easy to use and will last beyond its ten year guarantee. I use the pressure frypan to cook macrobiotic rice or oatmeal. After 50 minutes of high pressure cooking, I get perfect brown rice or oatmeal(no sticking or burning). Once you know the stove setting required to maintain pressure, you can almost forget it. However, as with any cooking device, I monitor it periodically. The pressure pot and frypan have flat bottoms which makes food preparation and cleaning a breeze. The glass lid was a major selling point, as it enables conventional use of both pots.

My wife makes succulent turkey drumsticks in only eight minutes of cooking time.

None of the other brands, we previewed, appeared to be constructed as well as the Kuhn Rikon models.

Needless to say, our family considers this set a great value. More important,we use it almost daily.

Best Deals for Kuhn Rikon 6-Piece Duromatic Duo Pressure Cooker Set

I purchased the set for use on my boat where I wanted to save energy and time while preparing meals and have been using them for several months now.

I found the 5 liter pressure cooker to be great. It is extremely well made and if cared for I have no doubt that it will outlast me. The glass lid is also very useful if I want to use the cooker as a regular cooking pot, which I do quite often.

The 2 liter cooker is quite disappointing though. Since you are not supposed to fill a pressure cooker more than half full at best you only have 1 liter to work with. Even for one person this is not much. I have found that I can use the larger cooker and if I have smaller amounts to cook I just use a small metal bowl as an insert. I was hoping that it could double as a fry pan but it does not have a non-stick coating and the stainless steel is quite sticky.

If I were to do it again I would buy the 5 liter cooker and the glass lid separately.

Additional info: after having the fry pan for close to ten years the bottom is delaminating form the pan. I'm hoping I can get it replaced under the warranty before it runs out in a few months.

Honest reviews on Kuhn Rikon 6-Piece Duromatic Duo Pressure Cooker Set

I received a 5-liter Duromatic pressure cooker as a gift 7 years ago, and wondered, "What on earth will I do with it?" Now I use it almost every time I cook. It is well-constructed and lives up to every promise they advertise: fast, healthful cooking has never been easier. If you love beans, there's no better way to cook them--dinner's ready in half an hour or less. Steam vegetables in 1 minute, cook a whole chicken in 19 minutes,or make perfect risotto with NO stirring in under 10 minutes from start to finish! You can make wonderful puddings and cheesecakes, too, with a little practice.

I ordered the "Duo" set to get the glass lid and the smaller cooker. Though I didn't need another 5L, it is quite handy to have two (I use it without pressure for cooking pasta or some soups.) The smaller (2L)size is wonderful for quickly cooking cereals, small quantities for babies or kids, or side dishes.

The recipe book provided with this set is extremely helpful and detailed, so don't be put off by having to learn the cooking techniques (Note to Kuhn-Rikon: a video or CD-ROM would be wonderful! I received a marketing CD-ROM a few years ago but IMO it should be in the box.) It can be tricky to convert recipes, the book contains thorough charts with cooking times for most foods, and once you get the basics down you'll be ready to start experimenting with your favorites. If you would like to cook with more whole grains and beans, this is a must-have. If you want that slow-cooked tenderness, but not the boring taste of Crock Pot cooking, pressure cooking is for you. Unlike the Crock Pot, the PC allows you to start with a saute', use the pressure to speed up your cooking time, and then add more delicate ingredients at the end so they stay crisp and colorful. Also, on a hot day like today, I appreciate that the shorter cooking time uses less energy and doesn't heat up the kitchen!

At first I had a hard time finding good PC recipes, but lately there seem to be more cookbooks coming out as the PC seems to be enjoying a bit of a revival. I just ordered Rick Rodgers' "Pressure Cooking for Everyone" and am happy to see more recipes for "gourmet" foods as well as everyday meals.

My only complaint, and it's a small one, is that I wish they sold custom cooking inserts for puddings and cheesecakes. The standard method is to cover your springform pan with foil and make a "harness" from foil to lift your pan in and out. You end up wasting a lot of foil, and it is easy to accidentally dump your dish on the way out. It would be great if they made an insert with a lid and handles to make this easier.

It would be hard to find a more versatile cooking tool, and I'm newly in love with my Duromatic(s) again after receiving my new set. BTW, the 7-year-old set is still perfect, not even the gasket has worn out, although it looks a bit shabby compared to the new styling and shiny finish of the new set. I can't say enough good things about Kuhn-Rikon or Duromatic. Give it a try! Here's to healthier, faster cooking in your home!

When I decided I wanted to buy a pressure cooker I "shopped" here at Amazon.com. The reviews were a great help. The pressure lid works like magic. It's so quiet. I also like having the 2 pot sizes. The smaller one is great for quick-cooking grains and beans. The larger one is great for cooking larger quantities or larger items like corn on the cob. I just cooked up some rice for rice pudding. Only 5 minutes! A really nice product.

I do not recommend this product to anybody. The whistle on this kettle is made out of cheap plastic. After around 2 weeks of use the whistle melted. This can possibly start a fire at your house if the melted plastic will come in contact with flammable materials. I used the kettle on a gas stove. You might be safe if you have an electric stove, since there is not that much heat radiated around the burner. However, this is defiantly a design flaw and I think the product should not be sold as it is not safe to use.

What I like most about this pot is that it has a copper bottom, sandwiched between two other layers of metal. I think that copper is the BEST metal for even heat distribution. Also, I like that it's a big pot that doesn't have a huge base that would overwelm the stovetop. (The diameter and height are each 9 inches.)

I have used this pot several times in the short time I've owned it. I like the fact that it doesn't take up a lot of space on my stove and the heavy bottom prevents scorching.

Compared to Polarware, Adcraft, Carlisle, All-Clad, Anolon Advanced Clad/Ultra Clad (which doesn't make a stock pot larger than 8 qts, anyway). Have not compared to the "professional" line of Tramontina but did not find a copper core in any of these brands other than All-Clad.

I bought two of these for Christmas gifts. One was for a gourmet cook in the family the other is a friend who loves entertaining and loves doing unique things. I also bought a tagine "deck" of recipes. I put that, along with all the non-perishable ingredients for one of the recipes, in the tagine and wrapped it up in clear cellophane. It was a huge hit! I did season the tagine first but it came with no instructions on how to do it, so I had to look it up. (You soak it in a bathtub overnight, let it dry, then put it in a 300 degree oven for 2 hours, then let it cool in the oven this will take a long time I put it in the oven at 9 a.m. at 10 p.m. it was still warm, which I think means that it will make a great serving vessel too. I wanted them to be able to cook with it immediately upon receipt of the gift). I had read that tagines needed an opening in the top and couldn't tell for sure if this one opened from the picture. It does not, but there is a small hole in the upper portion of one side, which I'm hoping will be enough. No one has cooked in it yet, though both recipients seemed genuinely excited about receiving it (I think it was my most well-received gift this year) and really seemed to want to jump right in and try cooking with it one of them spent about an hour looking up recipes on the internet after receiving the gift. The other says she put it on a shelf in their kitchen because it is a pretty piece of cookware she says everyone who has come in has asked about it it has been a real conversation starter and she is planning on cooking in it this week. It was packaged great in fact it took me about 30-45 minutes to get it free from its packaging. I think it would be great for entertaining. Invite 2-4 people over, cook in it and serve from it on the table it's bound to be the center of conversation. My kids wanted me to order one for ourselves so we could cook in it so if you want to introduce your children to this kind of cuisine this might be a good way to get them to eat it. To cook with it on the stove, you might consider ordering a diffuser as well they are about $14 online.

These were just what we wanted for single serving sized cooking tagines. The finish is rustic and looks authentic enough for those that are worried about that, but they do a great job cooking. The tagines were delivered in a heavily padded box (with no instructions, so you have to know how to work with them before using them) and arrvied within days of ordering. I ordered two and they were both were in great condition when they arrived. Beautiful, simple, and elegant, cooking with them is a dream. 10 years from now I should come back and let you know how they hold up. I'm sure by then the food will taste incredible simply by being associated with the tagines, since they should be well seasoned by then!

Use them more and your food will taste better and better... Also, make sure to soak and season yours and clean them the correct way and they will continue to work well for years and the food will simply taste better and better. Also, don't place these into a preheated oven. ALWAYS place them in the oven as it heats up or you risk cracking and destroying your tagines.

Best Deals for Cooking Medium Tagine by Treasure Of Morocco

This tagine in really cool. It is a darker than in the photo, so it does not have a rough "terra cotta" look at all. The finish work is pretty good and the ceramic is good and thick (heat retention is great). 9.5 inch size is great for a couple folks (probably 2 to 3). It came about as wrapped as something can get, so there was about zero chance of breakage (thank you Treasures of Morocco).

Make sure to season it. There are no instructions with it, but there is enough information on line that it is not hard to figure out what to do. Really hard to beat the value of this thing; easy to afford a second one in a different size for when we have guests or one in the same size if we want to cook a second dish.

Plan on using this on a gas burner equiped with a cast iron heat diffuser.

Honest reviews on Cooking Medium Tagine by Treasure Of Morocco

Arrived in perfect condition, very well packed. These are exactly the tagines we saw in every market in Morocco. I would have loved to been able to bring them home with me but they are heavy, bulky, and fragile. I was thrilled to find Treasures of Morocco had these same tangines. Have already made several dinners and they worked out great. Be sure to follow the directions for seasoning them before you use them. I soaked mine in the bathtub.

Stansport Cast Iron 6 Quart Chicken Fryer

This product is advertised as being a 6 quart fryer but it only holds 3 quarts. Totally false labeling/advertising. I wouldn't have ordered it if I had known it only held 3 qts. NOT A HAPPY CAMPER!!!!

Click Here For Most Helpful Customer Reviews >>

I took a chance on this, but as the other reviewer noted, this is a 3 quart fryer, not 6 quart. Aside from the size, the pan and lid I received were terrible. Both were badly cast (lid edge uneven, metal thicker in some spots than others), there was a gouge in the inside bottom of the pot and a divot in the lid, plus cardboard and gunge stuck to the outside of the lid and pan. Worst of all, was the exceedingly poor quality of the interior finish and the "pre-seasoning". As far as I can tell, this pot was coated in tallow or some other sort of wax, to give the illusion of a smoother interior finish and was NOT properly pre-seasoned OR finished inside I couldn't even begin to remove the wax (I tried) and there is no way I would want to ingest it. And despite the weird coating, there was still some rust on the inside of the pot. Additionally there were tons of little metal particles inside the pan. I tried wiping them out but the interior of the pan seems to be deeply coated with them. There is just no way that this could possibly be safe to cook in. This pan was made in China, clearly with little to no quality control. I also suspect the metal used is some sort of weird alloy and not proper cast iron (or the worst quality cast iron ever) just didn't look right and weight didn't seem right and seemed brittle. I had originally rejected buying a Lodge chicken fryer because I thought the interior finish on it was too rough, but the Lodge was a thousand times better than this piece of garbage. Returned.

Best Deals for Stansport Cast Iron 6 Quart Chicken Fryer

I've had it for a little while but it was unseasoned, so I've waited to write a review -but still have yet to use it to cook in. The seasoning process suggested by the manufacturer isn't as good as an old fashioned, lard shortening season, which I used after the first attempt [made my house smell dreadful!] Second time, I seasoned it near an open fire pit which gave it a really great patina.

One more open fire seasoning and it should be good to go. I'll return to write more after I've cooked my first batch of local fish or campfire chili in this fryer.

Honest reviews on Stansport Cast Iron 6 Quart Chicken Fryer

I bought two of these to use as smoke generators in large smokers. Works well for the purpose to hold wood chunks over the burner.

Very heavy pans that might be too heavy for regular use on a stove, especially with the lid on when loaded with chicken. Not seasoned (bare cast iron), so will need seasoning before use.

Received the skillet. A little surprised that they recommended veg. oil to temper as I always used lard, but I did it their way. It turned out wonderfully. The temper was excellent, the size was excellent and the chicken turned out perfectly, as did the fries, beans, donuts and corn bread subsequently made in it. Just like the old pots we used to get & have, and I expect to be able to give this to my daughter as Mom gave hers. Highest recommend.

I like the glasses very much, however one arrived broken and it was a hassle to find out how to send it back. They do say you can send back the broken glass and the pieces and they will replace it for 1/2 price. I needed the glasses for a party that was looming and so I just kept the three good ones. I couldn't find a telephone number to talk to a real person about it all.

I like my beer, this is a nice quality glass. This has a thin lip and a solid feel. I should of bought more. They have held up well in the dishwasher. They arrived safe and sound but they were not packed particularly well.

They are what they are glasses. They're nice though.

Unfortunately one arrived broken, so that was annoying.

I'd buy them again.

These glasses are the perfect size for beers. They have a clean, simple, classic look. Would highly recommend. The price was great too. They look nice without the bulk of beer mugs. Not too delicate either.

This pot is PERFECT for making homemade pasta for a moderate to large sized crowd.

The heavy base and large capacity means when you plunge in a plate of still-moist homemade spagetti, the water keeps boiling, or returns to a full boil within a minute or so. Ours has stayed beautiful in our active kitchen for over a year despite constant use and frequent washing.

This is my favorite large kettle.

I can think of NOTHING wrong with this pot.

Update: 4/2005 (a year later) This is STILL the perfect pot for cooking large batches of pasta and two-chicken soups.

Update 5/2008 (4 years later) Still looks as good as new, and works just as well. We've given them as gifts, and they are always appreciated!

Okay, I'll admit that I'm a bit biased towards Farberware in the first place, but with this pot they've done just about everything right. The aluminum slug sealed into the base makes for very even heating, which is important since it's wider than most burners. And it holds up to high heat well I've been browning meat and making roux in mine for a few years now. The lid is snug enough without being a pain and the loop handles are nice the smaller Classic series stock pots have the molded plastic ones instead. The only thing I'd change in the design of the pot is to use a brushed finish I tend to prefer that over chrome because any chrome pot that I use very often ends up with a patina of scratches anyway, and I prefer that they all run in the same direction. But who's complaining? This pot performs where it counts it heats quickly and evenly and has taken quite a beating over the years without so much as a ding.

We bought both the 12 and 16 quart pots. We couldn't be happier. We have a large family and these sizes are great for pasta, sauce, corn, chili, BBQ...you name it. They are very sturdy, and the bottom is perfectly flat...something we need because we have a ceramic cooktop. They heat evenly and food doesn't stick. We were looking at pots that cost considerably more, but I'm glad we make the choice we did.

great pot for the kitchen. you can cook a lot with out running out of room. the very heavy bottom spreads the heat so you can sear the meat and then make the chili in the same pot. use it for pasta and don't worry about boil overs. love it

This is a huge pot. It may look small in the picture, but it's 4 gallons, so it'll fit a lot of food. It'd be great for lobsters, I suppose, but if you are not inclined as to boil live animals, this pot is great for stews, soups, and chili. It's really big, but it has an extra thick bottom that distributes heat evenly, so no spot gets heated more than another making for good stews. Left on very low heat, it can pretend to be a slow cooker. Also, it's made of stainless steel and no food sticks to its sides or bottom. I have been using it constantly since I got it and I highly recommend it. I got it on sale I'm really happy with it.

I believe if you're serious about cooking, you should own great cookware and excellent knives. I finally stepped up and got excellent knives. For those who haven't heard the hype, Shun is one of the most respected knife brands in the world.

Great features of the entire line include these cool "D" shaped handles that fit your hand better. Each knife is made in a rightand left-handed version ( for lefties). The steel used for the blades is harder than what you would find in most other knives. The knives are EXTREMELY sharp.

If you're building your set and want to take care of the must-haves first. Move this down on your priority list. Get the chef's, paring and bread knives first. With that said, there is a place for this knife in your kitchen. As with all of my other Shun knives, this one is extremely sharp and it's relatively light.

This is great for sandwiches; you can use one knife to do everything well. I like the wider blade on this better than the narrow utility and tomato blades. This knife does not replace the bread knife, but it is good for small quantities of bread. I quickly tired of it when I used it to prep French bread for bread pudding.

This is an expensive, but lifetime investment. I encourage you to visit stores and feel the knives in your hand to make sure you are comfortable with them. For more info on Shun, check out Alton Brown's website. For ratings on various brands and types of knives, check out Cooks llustrated's equipment ratings.

Unless you are a daily sandwich fiend, make this one of the last knives you get to complete your set. It is certainly a nice knife, but not as crucial as other knives. My only regret is that I already own the tomato and utility knives.

I thought I was going to have at least 2 guests at a party try to steal this knife!

After getting a gift certificate at a kitchen store I wasn't sure what to get...but knives always grab me. The young lady who helped me kept pointing me to this Shun knife. The folded steel blade really got me and I could bring it back if it was a bust. My husband loves knives as well and does the sharpening.

One slice with this knife and I was hooked. Then a friend helped prep a party and she immediately picked it up and used it...and started raving about it without any input from me. Then a second friend arrived to help and grabbed the knife and couldn't believe how good it was.

I haven't found anything it doesn't slice well. I'd love a longer version for those bigger bread jobs...though it did 4 loaves of crusty french without a sore hand. Tomatoes don't stand a chance and never lose their shape in the cutting.

This knife is worth every penny and I'll buy another Shun knife when I'm ready....the Chicago cutlery is on its way out for sure now...I'm in my 50's and buying my lifetime knives.

The Shun utility knife is an oddball and you will have to give yourself plenty of time to get used to it. It is indeed a sandwich knife best for cutting bread and vegetables, good for spreading mustard and mayo. The weight is pretty heavy for a knife this size. The blade is thick. Luckily at six inches it is not too heavy for me to use. So what's the competition? I have an ancient set of Chicago Cutlery, the best my long ago student budget could afford. Out of sheer politeness, we must ignore this comparison. Then I have the set of Global knives, worthy of comparison: a paring knife, utility knife and Santuko 7" chef's knife. Great knives, sharp, light knives. It took time but the Shun blew them away. Then the lone finalist in the field another Shun utility knife, a 6" straight model light and razor sharp. Nope, the Shun ultimate utility knife wins hands down. It's something about the curved edge and the scallops that gives it the ability to take on everything at just the right angle. No more groping around for another knife because you're switching to another veggie. The wide blade lets you pick up stuff almost like a chef's knife and transfer to a bowl the scallops do make this tougher than a chef's knife, but hey, I'm lazy.

What's awkward about this knife? It's kinda short. Cutting a large watermelon is gonna be a challenge. Cheese well, none of these knives work with cheese. Any delicate cutting tasks, like dicing olives, is just too awkward because the blade is thick and now the scallops are too big in comparison.

I read somewhere at a knife aficionado's website that while the metal of the Global and the Shun are pretty similar, the Shun's are tweaked so the blade can hold the sharper edge. Unfortunately, this also means the metal is slightly more brittle than the Globals. So don't drop your blade.

Honest reviews on Shun DM0741 Classic U2 (Ultimate Utility) Knife

Why is it that most kitchen knives come to sharp points? How often does one really use that point? Most of the time it just prevents the front third of the knife from being used for spreading, and presents a handling danger.

I LOVE this funny looking alternative design. Highly recommended. Like a giant sandwich spreader with a wicked sharp serrated edge. Brilliant. Find myself using it for everything.

But one thing to know impossible to sharpen yourself due to the serrations the maker recommends returning it to the factory once a year, where they will sharpen and return it for no charge.

This Shun product is a beautful well made knife. The layers of stainless steel in the Damascus style blade form an interesting pattern resembling growth rings in wood. Shun refers to it as the U2 utility knife and while it is balanced, comfortable, and extremely sharp; it probaly won't replace your chefs or santoku kife. It will slice like crazy but because of the curve in the blade dicing or chopping are limited. Consider it a good knife for making sandwiches.

As with all Lodge products this cover works as it should. It keeps whatever you are cooking moist and allows a very low heat setting. It would be five stars if it did not cost almost twice the price of the skillet it is used with.

I completely agree with the other reviewer. The cover does its job well but is more expensive than the skillet itself..

I have a fire pit and a fire ring i use out in the back yard and i love to slow cook and what better way than with my new Lodge Basting Cover. thanks Amozon for making it so affordable to be purchased.

Honest reviews on Lodge L12SC3 Self-Basting Iron Cover, 13.25-inch

I love this lid, but I think it's funny that it costs more than the pan.

However, with this lid, you definitely bring the pan to life. The 13.25 inch skillet is endowed with Dutch oven capabilities now. It now does roasts, sautés mushrooms, and generally gives you a stovetop baking option. In general, I highly recommended this lid as well as its matching skillet. The only drawbacks are that it is incredibly heavy and takes up enormous amounts of space in the kitchen.

It works great and meats are very moist. When one buys this you have to think long term. Cast iron can easily be handed down to the next generation if taken care of, making this well worth the purchase price! Besides it sucks trying to use tinfoil on a pan this size when you don't have the lid.
