Cheap Outset QS83 Chicken Leg and Jalapeño Roaster with Collapsible Legs

I used this item for the first time today. I made some chicken I had soaking in a mostly buttermilk and jalapeño brine for 3 days. After 3 days of anticipation you can guess that I was really hoping this item would come through. It did a great job. The rack sits almost 5 inches off the grill so if you use big drums you will need a fair amount of clearance. Anticipating this I removed the top rack inside the lid of my grill that I usually use to cook dogs and brats. Depending on the size of your drums you may not even need to do this. Anyway...this little rack is big on quality. It is pressed into pretty heavy gauge stainless steel and it surprised me with its heft. Its legs fold under for easy storage and they are not light or thin, they are heavier gauge as well.

I made 12 drums that were of large to extra large in size so I did every other hole and alternated the rows. This allowed me to maximize space. if you are cooking medium to small drums, or organic, you can probably use every hole, but that is a lot of chicken. Unless you are having a party you probably won't need 24 drums. The large number of holes is for the other purpose of this item, roasted Jalapeño peppers or poppers. I have not yet made them, and honestly I don't know if I ever will; but I can see how this product would probably be ideal for it, as long as your peppers aren't too skinny.

All in all this item makes grilling chicken drumsticks super easy, you don't have to worry about turning them since they are vertical, because of this they cook evenly and more thoroughly in my opinion. Interestingly the meat kind of gathers even more so on the fat end, kinda like a chicken lollipop...mmmm delicious.

This set is attractive, weighty and durable. A great value for the money and I'd recommend it to anyone.

I reviewed more than 100 stainless steel sets for everyday, everything was either too overpriced or very cheap looking. My everyday stainless was almost 25 years old, dull, scratched, and I was embarrassed to have to put it on the table when company came so I dug out grandma's silver and would have to polish and shine to prepare as part of my dinner preparations. Now, if someone is just stopping by for lunch, viola! I just reach in the drawer and bring out this most elegant flatware, it's a nice weight, substantially sized pieces that definitely don't look cheap. It certainly doesn't look like everyday flatware, I'm proud to put it on my table when I serve guests.

I ordered these without having seen them in person, and at first look, I was very pleased. The pattern is attractive and even a bit elegant, and I was not disappointed from that perspective. But then I picked them up. They are lightweight, thinner than I expected and the underside looks and feels cheap. I would have preferred a more solid handle... with these, the underside is somewhat concave and it doesn't feel as nice as others that are available for a similar price. On the plus side, they do feel balanced and nice to hold (if you ignore the underside), and as I mentioned, I like the pattern.

Don't let the attractive appearance fool you; these are lower-end basic utensils.

I use this to break up hamburger in the fry pan and to mash potatoes, heavy duty tool will not mar pans.

Chopper works fairly well when meat is in small pieces to begin with. It is necessary to break ground meat up before using. Until the meat is partially cooked it sticks to the chopper. It is necessary to hit the side of the pan to get the meat off. Pam helps to keep the meat from sticking to the chopper.

I was disappointed in this product as it is so thick

it does not work well. Just wore me out to use it.

Bulkey and awkward. I will suggest a simple potato

masher instead. It works well, easier to handle and MUCH cheaper!

I recently purchased this and found it to work great to break up ground meat when browning it. So far that is all I have used it for but it would probably work as well for mashing potatoes.

Review of Nordic Ware Microwave Bacon Tray & Food Defroster

Nordic Ware Microwave Bacon Tray & Food Defroster
Customer Ratings: 4.5 stars

I've given this a good rating because I remember using my mom's eons ago, and I was happy to see that I could order one for myself decades later! But I goofed up. I didn't take into consideration the DIAGONAL measurement of this item, and it's too big to TURN in my microwave. So... make sure YOUR microwave has at least 16 inches of clearance inside if you want your bacon to spin. Duh.

UPDATE, ONE YEAR LATER: I did buy a smaller version of this tray, but I decided I like cooking bacon in the oven way better than the 'wave, even though it takes more time. Get a baking sheet with a cooling rack that fits inside (very cheap at a restaurant supply) and lay the bacon strips on top. Put it into a cold oven and set for 400 degrees. It takes about 15-20 minutes, but the results are crispier, flatter, and yummier (especially if you brush the strips with maple syrup the last few minutes of cooking). All the drippings are caught in the tray, which you can pour into a container pretty easily. Pork fat rules!

The tray works well enough. However, it would drain better if the feet were taller on the top end so that it was higher than the end with the collection area. I do like using the tray for defrosting.

I've had one for years and accidently threw it away. Was delighted to find it on the web, as I haven't seen it in the stores for a long time. Suggestion: Place a paper towel under the bacon while microwaving to ensure easy clean-up!

I recently had to replace my Capresso Burr grinder (which I had had for over 5 years) and wanted to make sure the replacement would make me as happy, if not happier, than my old grinder.

The Cuisinart Programmable Conical Burr grinder was my ultimate choice, after reading several reviews and doing plenty of research. I love the light-up LCD display, the start/stop switch (for those mornings when I'm not quite awake and start the grinder before I realize there's not enough beans in the hopper), the ease of adjusting the grind, and the overall design. While I had considered purchasing a cheaper product, (my Capresso was only around $40 afterall) I am very glad I went with this product. We grind our coffee fresh every morning, and thus far have been very pleased with how this unit performs.

The only reason I did not give this unit 5 stars is b/c it, like other Burr grinders, has a problem with static. I live in Houston, a VERY humid climate, but even the moisture in the air doesn't keep the static down enough, which can be bothersome. It means a bit of clean-up after every use, but the extent of the static is SIGNIFICANTLY less with this unit than my Capresso grinder, and the clean-up on this unit is far easier.

I highly recommend this product to anyone who wants something more reliable and consistent than a simple grinder, but doesn't want to spend a million dollars on a burr grinder.

Excellent coffee mill! Much quiter than any of my previous 4 mills/grinders. Also works faster and less "burn" taste from grounds. Very concsistent grinding. Also the top lid with the fill slot make pouring into filter easier versus my other mills had the window or slot on the side of the bin. Nice improvement

2 comments that are not issues but to be aware of. As it has an Blue LCD display there is always a blue light on, so for some this could be good and others a nuisance. Also you must keept the bin and slots clean as any slight grounds in the bin area will cause some minor leakage

I enjoy whole bean coffee. I replaced a blade type grinder with this one and am VERY happy with the taste of the brewed coffee. I use drip grind. I have had my best ever cup of coffee this morning with the same beans that I have been using for months on the other grinder.

Edit added 15 FEB 2011: Loving it more

Since I purchased this device, I also acquired a stove top espresso maker and an old fashioned stove top coffee percolator. I have experimented with different grinds and mostly use the setting #3 'espresso' for both my drip and espresso brewers. I weigh (ounces) rather than measure (spoons) of the coffee and have found about 1.4 ounces of #3 grind will make a very good 10 cup pot of drip coffee. The percolator still needs a coarse grind, I use #12 setting for that. I first tasted coffee before drip coffee makers were widely available and sometimes miss the taste of old fashioned percolated. You cannot hardly purchase coarse ground coffee any more, I find the selectable grind settings a big plus.

Honest reviews on Cuisinart CBM-18N Programmable Conical Burr Mill

I don't typically review products, but since I poured over countless reviews before deciding on this grinder, I decided to add my thoughts.

I've realized that the problem with turning to any Internet reviews, be they for products or restaurants, is that people are way, WAY too picky. Maybe it's just me, but it isn't helpful when people find it necessary to highlight anything and everything that could be seen as a possible flaw, thereby picking apart what is probably a suitable option for most people. So I want to begin by addressing to of the biggest complaints I've seen in these reviews: the unit makes a mess, there's a static problem with the grounds cartridge, and it's too hard to clean. I've also noticed a lot of people don't really understand why one would buy a conical burr mill as opposed to a plain ol' blade grinder (which are way cheaper.)

I've had the grinder for about 8 months now, and I have not experienced any of those issues to the extent that many people describe. If you give the unit a little tap on the side before removing the grounds cartridge after you grind, you're not going to have surprise grounds coming out of the chute. I have not found the static issue to be that big of a deal. The grounds cartridge is plastic, so yes, there is some sticking of the grounds to the sides of the cartridge, but it's usually the finer bits and dust (which I don't want anyway), and it really isn't that much. The cartridge is very easy to rinse out and dry. I brew using a Chemex, so uniformity of the grounds is really key for me. I brew every day, sometimes twice a day, so as long as I clean the burr every few days, the grind stays really uniform. It's not that difficult to clean. The hopper comes right off when you turn it all the way to the coarsest setting, and the inner burr pulls right out. I use the brush that comes with the unit and a lightly damp paper towel.

Regarding the functionality of the unit: the LED screen is nice (I haven't had any problems with it.) I weigh out my grounds, so I haven't used the cup presets that much. The variable grind settings are pretty accurate, especially for a coarser grind (as long as you make sure to clean it regularly as I've said.) I've noticed that some people don't think it can grind fine enough for espresso; unfortunately, I have speak to that since I don't have an espresso machine. Overall, I've been very happy with the basic functionality of the unit.

You buy a burr mill primarily for two reasons: uniformity of the grind and no inadvertent heat imparted to the beans from rapidly spinning blades. If you use an auto-drip machine, the first reason isn't that big of a deal. If you're using any other method (i.e. French press, Chemex, vacuum, etc.), it matters a lot so that the coffee isn't over-infused, to keep your coffee from having too much sediment, and so on. Blade grinders chop the beans, creating all different sizes of grounds, and creating a lot of very fine dust which can be a problem for non-autodrip methods. (Burr mills crush the beans.) From what I've found, this burr mill provides a good uniformity especially for the price. I have two friends each with conical burr mills that were over $200 (a Baratza Virtuoso and a Breville Smart Grinder) and I really feel like my Cuisinart is quite comparable in ground uniformity. The second reason for a burr grinder is important no matter how you brew your coffee. The beans are quite sensitive to temperature, and blades spinning at the speed necessary to chop the beans (20k 30k rpm) imparts heat to the grind. If you brew one or two cups at a time, chances are you're not running your grinder long enough for this to be a problem. But if you're doing a 10 or 12-cup pot each morning, the amount of aroma you lose using a blade grinder is significant. A conical burr mill runs at under 500rpm, imparting a negligible amount of frictional heat. This ensures that you're tasting your coffee the way it was meant to be tasted (assuming your brew is good.)

As the title says, this is a great grinder for the price. If you've been looking to get a conical burr mill, you've probably noticed that you can spend anywhere from $40 to over $450. So if you're new to this, it can seem like you could be spending $80 on a unit that isn't as good as ones that are more expensive but also might not be any better than one of the cheaper grinders. I'm pretty confident that this grinder is comparable to others that cost twice as much and (given reviews of cheaper burr grinders), it's worth spending the extra money for it.

I am NOT an aficionado i love coffee though. i am not the guy that is going to check that all of the grounds are uniform what i see when i pour them into the coffee maker look uniform to me. The coffee that i make using this grinder make better coffee than i have ever made. Prior to this though i just had a little blade grinder though. there are still issues with grounds sticking to the plastic holder but i don't' think you can get away from that there is a static issue and i don't know how one would get around that.

i dig this purchase i have had the grinder for 4 or 5 months now and still dig it it is easy to use and like i said it make YUMMY coffee.

July 2010 it pooped out! i am calling Cuisinart today. They are really good about their warranties and i have no doubt they will send me a new grinder. will update after that!

Didn't get around to calling Cuisinart until August found out that it only carries an 18 month warranty guess what? that was August 2nd they won't do anything for me. I was once a huge fan of Cuisinart recommended their products was impressed with their warranties they replaced a coffee maker for me anyway after looking on the website and seeing that it carried a 3 year warranty i didn't think i had to get right on it. . . i guess i did they claim that is a misprint and i guess they expect a $100 coffee grinder to poop out after 18 months (or right about that). too bad i guess they aren't as great as i thought. I wouldn't buy this again. wish i could remove stars. . .

Do not buy if you want a 20 Qt pot, this one is only 16 Qt. I had to return to Amazon twice. It is clear to me that this vendor is selling this pot as 20 Qt when it is not. Amazon said they would investigate, yet this item is still listed on their site. Why would Amazon let this vendor lie to their customers?

Over all this is a poorly put together product. At the price I didn't expect a whole lot, but I expected more than I received. The biggest problem was that the stainless steel coating was breached in several areas , especially on the rivits where the handles attach. The pot itself was of very thin metal and looked like it would become damaged very easily. I decided to retun it as soon as I saw it, and spend the extra money on a better made product. This might be OK for some applications, but for a little more money you can get a product that will last much longer and have fewer problems in the long run.

Best Deals for Imusa Stainless Steel Stock Pot, 20 Quart

The other reviews are correct. This is a shoddy product. It's of inferior quality. And it's pictured with a lid but doesn't actually have one. I realize now that if it came with a lid it would be titled "stock pot with lid", but I didn't before. So they should get a picture of one without a lid. And if you actually want a good stock pot, buy something else.

Honest reviews on Imusa Stainless Steel Stock Pot, 20 Quart

As a homebrew pot, this would have been sufficient. It's thin, cheaply made but serves it's purpose. My issue with the product is it's a lie. It hold four gallons. 20 quarts is five gallons.

They did not ship me the wrong pot, it's simply not 20 qts but 16. I'm also not the only person to have that experience with this pot. Take my advice, and buy a different pot.

We purchased this as a gift to be used for home brewing beer. It came with tiny round dents all over the lower sides. It is also VERY light. We returned it because of the dents, but had reservations about giving it as a gift just because of how light and cheap it felt. I would recommend spending more and getting a better pot.

This is a very small pan with two side handles and a lid. It is non-stick and is just the right size to fry one egg. I gave it as a stocking stuffer and the recipient just loved it and said it was really cute and useful. Go figure for just a couple of bucks!?

Click Here For Most Helpful Customer Reviews >>

I'm reviewing the one that's ~6.5" across and has only the one, skillet-style handle. It's very lightweight aluminum but the handle is also very lightweight stuff, so it doesn't tip due to lopsided weight issues like some others. I make 3 eggs almost every day in it. A little olive oil is what I like, but it has a very good nonstick surface and you could use it with a very light oil or spray coating as long as you keep the heat down, which medium heat is about the max you should cook eggs with, anyway. The lid fits well; it has to, to baste (steam) the eggs which is how I cook them: heat pan for about 30 seconds on med-low heat, add a little oil (1tsp ?) spread it around with a paper towel, let it get hot for about 30sec then break the eggs into the pan. With the pan already hot, the eggs instantly catch hold, and you'll have three evenly spaced eggs when you're done. Sprinkle with salt & pepper then Let them cook uncovered for 2min, then add about 2tsp of water evenly around the edge of the pan in a circle, and quickly put the lid on. Turn the heat to low -not miniscule, just low. Cook for another 1.5mins & remove from heat, and have your toast or whatever ready to go, because you need to plate them quickly as eggs will continue to cook in the hot pan after you turn off the fire. Remove from pan with a flexible plastic spatula, gently working it under the edges before tilting the pan contents onto your plate. This pan has a slanted edge so the eggs will just slide out once they're gently loosened -something few pans have and is very important IMO. Voila, beautiful over-easy style eggs without having to flip them -that's the beauty of basting. Occasionally there'll be a tiny bit of the water from steaming on them; blot it off if it bothers you but it's not really necessary. For one or two eggs just decrease the cooking time. Cleanup with a soapy sponge is so easy you almost don't deserve it, but be sure to let it cool first or you'll warp any pan that way. You never want to use high heat on a little light pan like this. A family member did, and the handle got too hot and cracked. I glued it and used it another year or so til it came apart now I'm beside myself for another, as Amazon is out of them. I love my egg-pan!!! And woe be to them in my home who use it for anything BUT eggs enforce this rule, and don't go over medium heat, and you'll have a really great egg-pan.

edit 7-24-12 They've started making this pan a little differently. I got my new one, same mfr and name of the product, at Walmart which is where I got the original one, too. The interior non-stick is that diamond-ey-looking stuff now, which seems to work ok, but the sides are a tiny bit steeper and the slanted edge narrower, which defeats what I liked most about my original one. Still a very good egg-pan, I just wish manufacturers would leave things alone that already work great; if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Best Deals for Imusa Casserole with Lid and Handle, 6.3 Inch

The item I received looks NOTHING like what is in the advertised picture above. What I received is a small frying pan (the size is accurate) that has NO rounded handles like in the picture, but rather one typical frying pan handle (that sticks out). In addition, the pan and its cover are a very ugly pea green...not attractive at all. It looks and feels so cheap that I'm almost afraid to use it! Not sure what to do with it!

This is a really great set of scissors for the price. Owning Wusthof knives and a pair of come-apart kitchen sheers, I thought this set would be high quality and I was right. The scissors are sharp, solid and strong. The only thing I cant rave about is the little pruners. They lack the heft they need for anything other than tender stems. I think if Wusthof added another blade, they would do a better job, but the pruners have only one blade and the other surface is plastic, so you dont get a good, clean cut with a woody stem like a rose or lilacs. Other than that, the other pieces perform superbly, fit comfortably in the hand, and stand up to the abuse I give them. They are also dishwasher safe and come out sparkling. Yes I do recommend these. I have purchased another set as a gift.

A friend gifted me with a dinosaur bread crust cutter to use at childcare. While making snacks for the kids, I got to thinking that there were probably more shapes available. I went right to Amazon and was pleased to find several other shapes available. I liked the dinosaur gift cutter so much and found that the kids loved having shape sandwiches so I ordered the heart shapped cutter and another. The cutters are easy to use and the kids eat a more substantial snace when I use them. I received the product quickly and in pristine condition!

Click Here For Most Helpful Customer Reviews >>

This sandwich cutter does a decent job overall. The plastic usually cuts down into the sandwich but sometimes needs a little extra pressure or a knife to separate thick parts. It doesn't always fit the sandwich depending on the size of the bread but that is to be expected. But the kids that don't like crust love this cutter and I need to get more in different shapes/animals.

Best Deals for Evriholder Products Sweet Bytes Crust Cutter, Colors May Vary

I really appreciate how easily this crust cutter slices through a sandwich. It is lightweight and easy to clean but it does require a fairly large bread-size, in order to get the whole shape. Oftentimes, whole grain bread loaves are more "horizontal" than square, and the bread cutter doesn't fit at all. But if you prefer to eat lighter breads, or even white bread, it will likely be a perfect shape.

Nevertheless, it is a delightful shape, and I'm glad I purchased it.

Honest reviews on Evriholder Products Sweet Bytes Crust Cutter, Colors May Vary

I find that these type of sandwich cutters work best when used directly on a cutting board. It allows you to put enough pressure to correctly cut the bread. If you don't want to haul out your cutting board, all you have to do is push down and tear the crust away. As other reviewers have stated, this item is slightly too big for a regular sized loaf of commercial bread. You can get around this problem by using a larger loaf of bread than usual or just cut it in the way that best fits your bread. Your kiddo probably won't notice. I used it tonight to cut pizza dough to make heart shaped pizzas to include in my son's Valentine's Day lunch for tomorrow. It worked perfect. I'd give it another star if it were slightly smaller.

I was very excited about these cutting boards when I bought them. They were quite thin when they arrived but that didn't really bother me until...I put them in the dishwasher after using them ONCE (the description says 'dishwasher-safe' however no actual instructions were included in the pkg) for the first time and when I took them out they were all sort of 'warped' and now they don't lay flat AT ALL. I was very bummed and thought maybe all the flexible board were liked this, however...

The next day I was at a major discount retailer and saw a much thicker, sturdier pack of FOUR cutting boards for $5.xx! I bought them that day and haven't used the other cutting boards since! They are SO much better! So, I recommend you buy the 4-pk of flexible boards I mentioned at your local retailer NOT these poor quality ones.

UPDATE! Ok, so I had these cutting boards stored in a cabinet next to the other thicker cutting boards I mentioned I bought. I had a heavy stone cookie pan laying flat against all of them...and good news!...the Norpro boards I bought on amazon flattened out and look good again! So, maybe it just takes a little more effort to flatten them after each dishwashing.

Honest reviews on Norpro Cut-N-Slice Flexible Cutting Boards, Set of 3

These cutting boards are less of a cutting board and more of a plastic funnel/mise en place tool.

After using them the first time they retain knife marks as permenant bends in the plastic, durability rating of .5 stars. They also do not retain their original flat shape in a reasonable manner.

A couple years ago I bought from Amazon a set of flexible cutting mats like this, but they were larger (~11x14, methinks) and had a slightly gummy print on the back that helped it stay put on your countertop while you cut. These mats, unfortunately, are both smaller and have no such gummy print -so they slide around on the counter as you cut. Very, very annoying. I bit the $6 on these but would recommend that you NOT: rather, look elsewhere (outside Amazon, even?? *gasp*) for the larger and non-slip kind!

We bought this pressure cooker from Macy's. The body and handles are still in very good condition after about 1 year of moderate use. However, the red/purple-ish lock on the upper handle began to deform by the heat from the cooker (it is shielded from the stove burner by the lower handle), making the open and lock operation harder and harder, until finally the plastic piece is stuck to the open position rendering the pot thing useless. Fagor's warranty does not cover this. I was instructed to place an order for the upper handle assembly which costs over 1/3 of the price of the entire thing. I can't see how the problem is not caused by a defect in the material, or why one should continue spend money on the company's product.

1. Cooking with a pressure cooker

Think of a pressure cooker as a crock pot on steroids. The increased pressure inside the sealed vessel results in an elevated boiling point, producing a higher cooking temperature for faster cooking. The standard pressure for these cookers is 15 psi, raising the boiling point from 212f to 250f. Current design features considerably improve the safety of these pots over WWII vintage kitchen bombs.

Pressure cookers are perfect for pot roasts, stews, soups, stocks and long-simmering sauces, reducing cooking times by as much as seventy percent. Beans cook faster in a pressure cooker, although their soaking time is unaffected. Rice will cook faster, too, although the convenience of a dedicated rice cooker is beyond dispute.

Some pressure cookers let users select a second, lower pressure setting (8 psi, bp @ 215f), which yields considerably less accelerated cooking. Why slow down a high-speed cooker? Because some foods, like veggies and fish, cook quickly, and when cooked at 15 psi it is difficult to control doneness. (Recipes for these foods call for running cold water over the pot lid to quickly reduce the pressure and lower the temperature to stop the cooking. For more usual dishes, one would merely turn off the heat and let the cooking coast to a stop.) Pot-count or hubris may move some chefs to use their pressure cookers to prepare delicate foods regardless of the risk of under/over-cooking. The low pressure setting is intended to help these people. For most cooks, foods that cook quickly are better prepared using conventional methods. Arguably, a clever chef could use a pressure cooker as their only pot for all purposes, a desirable feature when living out of a knapsack on a desert isle where time is money or fuel is precious.

For most cooks, a pressure cooker will not be an essential kitchen utensil, but it is desirable for its ability to shorten long simmer times. An eight-quart pot is probably the most versatile size for most users, because the pot can only be filled to half or at most two-thirds capacity. If veggies are to be steamed rather than boiled, you will need a steamer insert. Expect a learning curve as you discover how to operate the pot and adjust cooking times. A pressure cooker should be stored unassembled, and the gasket (about $10) may need to be replaced occasionally. All parts should be hand washed. The the pot and lid are ruined if dinged where the gasket seats.

2. The Fagor Pressure Cooker

Fagor in Spain is like General Dynamics in the US a huge industrial conglomerate. Their "Commercial" (and similar "Splendid") model pressure cooker has a substantial heft to it and seems ready to withstand the rigors of the kitchen. An aluminum heat dispersion disc, completely encapsulated in stainless steel, is bonded to the bottom of the thick-walled stainless steel pot. The stainless steel lid is similarly substantial, and is polished to a mirror finish. The handles seen sturdy enough, although they are plastic and subject to damage. An order form for replacement parts is provided in the box and parts are available over the Internet ( An instruction booklet is incluye, imperfectly translated from the Spanish. An 80-page recipe book is also included, with full color photographs of fabulous dishes, several of which cannot be prepared in the cooker(!).

The regulator control dial on this unit has three positions: Pressurized (15 psi), open, and remove valve. The lid has a safety interlock that prevents it from being opened while the pot is pressurized, and a small plastic rod pops up to indicate the interlock is active. (One reviewer suggested this rod indicates the pot has reached 15 psi, but this is not so; you know the pot has reached 15 psi when steam starts to escape from the regulator valve.) Another safety feature is a slot in the lid that allows part of the gasket to blow out if the pot has been over-filled.

I was attracted to this model pressure cooker because it seemed to represent an attractive price-performance point. My experience has confirmed that. The value of a second, low pressure setting is arguable for all but the most dedicated pressure cooker users, and fancy features like a pressure gauge seem minimally useful. If I were to buy another pressure cooker, I would likely select this model again, albeit in an 8-qt version to compliment the 4-qt size that seemed the best size for this bachelor cook.

My mom uses a pressure cooker. It's an old, beat-up thing made out of who-knows-what in an ugly brown color and the jiggly thing on top. It must be older than me. But the stew that comes out of it is amazing. So I think I want my own pressure cooker and added this one to our wedding registry. One of our guests (no doubt a pressure cooker fan) bought it for us. In fact, it was the very first gift snatched off our Amazon.com registry! Then it went into the closet. That was last year and I am embarrassed to admit it. We just bought a new house, and inspired by all the extra cabinet space I dug out the Fagor. Risotto in 6 minutes? No way! I have to try it. They aren't kidding. You can make a butternut squash risotto in 6 minutes. That's right...a hard-as-a-rock winter squash that comes out as if you'd been roasting it for an hour. It was the best risotto we ever had. The prep time took twice as long as the cook time and consists mainly of cutting up your veggies and/or meats into chunks. My husband couldn't believe the carrots in it were as soft as if they had been slow-cooked all day. I am now a fan and am on the quest for a good pressure-cooker cookbook. The Fagor is easy to use. I read the instruction manual first because the thought of a pressurized pot sitting on my stove scared me a little bit... You can brown meats and veggies in the pot with some oil before adding in everything else + liquid and snapping on the lid to bring it up to pressure. Never fill up the pot! It should only be 1/2 to 2/3 of the way full, depending on what you are cooking and how much it will expand. That might mean I have to get a bigger pot if I want to cook for more than 4 people. There is a little yellow indicator that pops up to tell you when the pot is properly pressurized. Problem is, once I saw the yellow indicator, I couldn't remember where its original "down" position was. The best indicators are your ears. Just wait for the loud "SHHHH" noise and then turn down the heat (or move the pot over to a burner set on "low" if you have an electric stove). I admit the "SHHHH" scared me a little. OK, a lot...enough to make me move out of the kitchen and peer at the pot from a distance. The amount of steam that comes out is barely visible, so the sound is the best indicator. After 6 minutes of "SHHHH" I took the pot off the stove, set it in the sink, and gently ran cold water over the lid with the sprayer hose. In probably 30 seconds there was a loud, brief "HISSS" and then the yellow indicator retreated, indicating that the pot was de-pressurized. OK, I admit the "HISSS" really made me jump. Just to be sure, I turned the valve to the "release steam" position and nothing came out (Note: I don't think I would ever use the "release steam" position while anything was cooking. It would make me too nervous. I will always leave the valve on the "high pressure" position and only use the "release steam" position after the cold-water depressurization to double-check). I felt a lot better now that all the "SHHHH" and "HISSSS" was done and took the pot out of the sink and opened the lid. I peered doubtfully inside the pot. No way. This risotto looks perfect and I didn't even stir it! I tossed in some raw shrimp and frozen peas to cook in the remaining heat (which worked very well as the remaining heat is quite high), then added my cheese and dinner was ready. In my opinion all the veggies tasted and looked a lot brighter than they would have if cooked in a slow-cooker. This might mean retiring our slow-cooker. Clean-up was easy. Just wash out with warm water and mild detergent. Take out the gasket and the valve (you have to turn it to the release position first) to rinse thoroughly, then let everything dry separately before re-assembling. Apparently you should oil the gasket lightly to prolong its life but I was too lazy. I will probably oil it every few times I use it. I have got to try indian curries in this thing.

Honest reviews on Fagor Splendid 6 Quart Stainless Steel Pressure Cooker

Cannot give any kudos to Fagor for sturdiness or support for this product and would rate a zero if it were possible. Had a 'Splendid' model cooker that gave performance problems with the upper handle not performing well and after warranty period had expired, discovered that the pressure sensing button was defective. Could find no way to get just the button, which should have been a 50 cent item, and had to order a complete upper handle assembly to get the button ($26 including shipping and their 800 number never responds). After receiving the new handle with all it's parts, when taking the shipping tape off of the handle, the locking slider fell off. It was broken before being packed and taped to the handle to keep it there until delivered. Called the Fagor 800 number and got a message to leave a name and number and they would call me back within 48 Hrs. After 4 days with no call back, sent them an email through their web site explaining the problem and requesting a new part. Now 1 week later and no call back, no email answer and no replacement part.

I had seen reviews describing Fagor's lack of support over things like this and didn't believe that a company this big could be so lacking in support of their customer base. I've had enough of this company and am switching to Magafesa or an American manufacturer to see if their support is any better. It certainly can't be any worse!!!

First let me say we absolutely used these every day camping. Actually twice a day. Let me explain. Of course at night we used them for marshmallows and the long forks for hot dogs. However, the best discovery came @ breakfast time when we went to toast our toast over the fire. we skewered the toast on the forks which worked ok. But that hot dog thing that so many reviewers complained about it not being the right fit? We found out the hard way that was correct. But my daughter put 2 slices of bread and there and placed it over the fire. Voila!!! Perfect toast! It even had the little lines as if it came from a toaster. And two at a time and the 2 slices are a PERFECT fit! They should re-advertise this as a toaster! So if you think of that piece as a mini toaster rather than a hotdog thingy you can be perfectly confident everyone will be waiting in line to do their own toast! And the color coded sticks are genius! We really enjoyed this set and it would make an amazing gift. Just dont forget to tell them about the toaster! Oh! One more thing! I got this half price free shipping at Gander Mt.

My only problem was with the 4 dog holding clamped thing. The weenies fell out of it (the dog liked this--we did not). After giving up on that, the other forked sticks worked really well.

They are really handy when cooking hot dogs, sausages and marshmallows over an open fire. The long forks work really great for the kids to use so they won't get burned. We have had lots of fun roasting marshmallows and would recommend this set to anyone that spends time outdoors cooking.

Was so glad to find these at Amazon when looking for something a little nicer than a coat hanger for a church cookout. We love the products also to cook in our fireplace. The only complaint I have is that the hinged 4-up Safe'T'Roaster is not tight enough and the wieners slip out easily. It works better with a thicker bratwurst type. Fortunately, with the other products offered in this set, we don't really need the hinged one.
