It's a neat looking teakettle, holds a lot of water and does a great job of pouring (some don't believe it or not). The spout cover can be locked open or held partially open and the handle stays relatively cool. Our one problem was the exact opposite of the other reviewer's: it didn't whistle at all! I blew through the little harmonica lid and it made noise (maybe not up to Bob Dylan standards, but it did make noise). We called Chantal customer service and they said it was a common problem. He told us to loosen the screw that holds the harmonica against the spout and it would seal better and whistle. So (being Mr Fixit) I took the whole thing apart, stretched the little spring that holds the harmonica down, turned the screw out a bit and now it seals better and whistles. Not deafening but clearly audible. So now it works, but the Chantal guys need to recalibrate the laser controlled high tech assembly robots at their cutting-edge manufacturing facility in Thailand. Uh-huh.

The craftsmanship of this kettle is outstanding. Paint is thick and rich, will change its shade a bit with temperature. The whistle is different here, it sounds more like locomotive signal loud and low frequency. I used it on a gas stove and whistling nose lid (made of plastic) burned at the bottom a bit jamming the whistling element, and now lid does not close tight, therefore no whistling. Looks like this kettle was designed with electrical cooker in mind.

The main lid tends to get stuck half way when I close it, allowing steam to escape, which leads to no whistling.

The handle is ergonomically located slightly on a back for no-strain pouring and is always cool enough to touch.

Time to boil is slightly longer due the spherical shape of this kettle.

Nice tea kettle. I find that if I place the lid carefully so that it seats and clicks in, the whistle will work, otherwise there is not enough steam pressure to create the (albeit unusual) whistle sound.

Part II--A month after i wrote the above, the whistle went totally silent. I've tried to fix it but I'm not as handy as the guy who wrote that he took the whole thing apart. I have a million things to take care of and--call me crazy--I expect my tea kettle to more or less take care of itself.

I'm taking it back. C'est tout! I can't change my rating on this form but I would have to give it no stars at all.

Honest reviews on Chantal 1.8-Quart Loop Teakettle

I just received this kettle in the mail. I've boiled three pots of water (increasing volume each time) and haven't heard a peep out of this thing. Amazing. How hard is it to sell a functional whistling kettle? Steer clear of this model. I'm sending my back.

This is a beautiful kettle, but I bought it mainly for its loud whistle, which WAS truly loud when I tested it. For some reason, however, it doesn't always whistle--hence...DISASTER. I didn't hear it whistle so forgot about it, it overheated, and the black plastic melted. This is the second disappointment; the first was a Copco Virtu kettle, also beautiful, which didn't whistle at all because it was too loosely assembled. I will now have to spend almost $100 to get a kettle I can trust--one made of ALL stainless steel--no plastic.

This review is from: Telebrands Orgreenic, 10-Piece Set (Kitchen)

I cancelled a previous Amazon Review of the OrGreenic pans so that I could write about an interesting discovery. THERE ARE DIFFERENT KINDS OF ORGREENIC PANS BEING SHIPPED OUT BY TELEBRANDS EVEN IN THE SAME SHIPMENT.

I AM NOT GOING TO RATE THE COOKING SURFACES BECAUSE IT WOULD NOT BE LOGICAL TO DO SO SINCE YOU MAY NOT HAVE THE SAME ORGREENIC PANS THAT I DO. I HEARTILY SUGGEST THAT PERSONS INTERESTED IN NEW, SAFER NON-STICK COOKWARE PURCHASE FROM NAME BRANDS THAT HAVE A TRACK RECORD IN THE COOKWARE INDUSTRY. Also, at the end of this review I am including excerpts of the OrGreenic warranty, which is NOT the same thing TeleBrands SAYS in their advertisements. On their website and in their commercials, they say, "If Orgreenic ever dulls or damages, even if it is your fault, we'll replace it" and "Your cookware will last a lifetime or we'll replace it". (I was totally unable to find a copy of the warranty online.)

_______________________________________________________________________________________

My first order for OrGreenic pans was via the internet in response to a television ad (not an infomercial I have never watched an infomercial on the OrGreenic pans). The special offer was 2-10" "frying" (saute) pans (with the usual single handle) and a larger 12" dual-handled saute pan. The $$$ deal ended up being good for 3 pans even if they had been Mirro (the brand I usually purchased and discarded when worn out).

When those 3 pans arrived, due to a very junky cardboard shipping carton and inadequate inner packing, all 3 were damaged. I reported the 2 worse damaged ones since they had gouges in the cooking surfaces made by the rivets on the backs of the pans that were stacked inside of them. I expected a hassle, but the person on the phone promised immediately to replace them and did not request that I return the damaged pans.

ALL THREE OF THOSE PANS WERE IDENTICAL. The inner surfaces were identical in shade of green. The rims were "naked" of coating, and the outsides of the pans all had a gray coating that proved to be extremely delicate and scratched the first time they were used on a gas range with metal grates over the burners. Personally, I did not care that the outsides had scratched because I was only concerned with the inner coating's performance.

The replacement pans took many weeks to arrive. I received 2 postcard notices in the mail that stated, "Due to the huge demand . . . ", etc., reassuring me that the pans would be shipped as soon as possible.

When the replacement pans finally arrived, the first thing I noticed was that the handles on the dual handled 12" saute pan were at a different angle. I immediately suspected that they had gotten bent in shipping that is, until I compared the new 12" dual handled pan to the previous one. That is when I realized that I had 2 completely DIFFERENT PANS. The handles appeared to be cast on the new pan and stamped on the original pan. The inner coating on the new pan was noticeably darker, the rim was coated unlike the previous pan's uncoated rim, and the coating on the back of the pan was also different. The external coating on the new pan was much harder, and there was a pattern in it that looked much like the concentric line on an old phonograph record, rather than the plain, soft grey coating on the outside of the original 12" dual handled saute pan. The stamped in logo indicia on the bottom of the pan was also different on the new 12" dual handled saute pan from the one in the previous pan. Also, the new dual-handled 12" saute pan is slightly larger and weighs more on the scale, and noticeably so when picked up with one hand.

The new 10" saute pan was different from the previous ones, and DEFINITELY ALSO DIFFERENT FROM THE NEW 12" dual handled saute pan. It appears to be an absolutely different 3rd version of the OrGreenic pans. It has a bare rim like the original 2-10" saute pans and the original 12" dual-handled saute pan had. Its cooking surface looks similar to the original 10" pan, but the outside has yet a third version of coating and again another, slightly different logo/indicia stamped into its bottom. Its handle is different yet from any of the other pans.

When you first get this cookware be sure to follow directions! it tells you put veggie oil on the entire (green)surface then wipe dry. You will have to repeat this ONCE per YEAR. Afterward it works great! even burnt on gravy or stir fry comes right off with just a paper towel or running water. Do not Scrub or use metal utensils and it really will last. We've had ours for 6 months and it's still going strong.. and my husband is very destructive.. he's burnt three pans that had to be throw away. Orgreenic has saved us so much money cause now he can burn food and not ruin the pan!

The green is coming off a pot with just my fingernail!!! I didn't even use this item yet. I called Orgreenic directly and they want me to pay for the shipping fee for the replacement which I don't believe is fair because they were never used. Don't buy a product that the manufacturer will not stand behind without charging you.

Honest reviews on Telebrands Orgreenic, 10-Piece Set (Including Lids)

The second time I've cooked with these, food had started to cling to the pan (even with a bit of butter, because I don't believe anything is truly "nonstick"). This was a complete waste of money, and I can't figure out how these pans are supposed to be somehow environmentally friendly--is it because they're green? Because other than the color, they resemble like any other pan one might find in a dollar store.

I purchased the 2 skillets from the company directly. After one use the small skillet has a scratch in it don't know how since I do not use metal utensils. They really do need a little spray or butter when you cook because the food will stick. Easy to clean

Basic Essentials 5-Quart Polished Pressure Cooker Reviews

I got this pressure cooker at thanksgiving 2010. I use it at least every other day since then. If you follow directions it is the safest and easiest pressure cooker I have ever used. I have used all types. antique screw downs, huge ones, prestos, and this is the best and I have never had anything stick to the bottom like my last 2 prestos before this one. I always make sure to wash and immediately dry my gasket after each use and make sure it has no oil on it. It is now time for a new gasket, but everything else on mine is in perfect working order. Since the gasket replacement is about 1/2 the cost of a new one I am opting to buy a new one at this point. It has beyond paid for itself 10 fold in time savings. It says something when you are a repeat customer. I am very familiar with pressure cookers but have recommended this to friends that have never used one at all. I always recommend staying close to it though for anyone. Also helps us eat healthier. You can have 2 bags of frozen turnips or lima beans ready 20 minutes after rocker starts rocking. Make sure to add a little oil so it will not foam up.

Follow UP: this is not the pressure cooker I bought before. this is the recession version. I struggled with this pressure cooker 2 hours to get it to work. It is too tall and skinny. Previous version was wider and not as tall and metal was thicker. Ok so after it boiled over and foamed out of the top three times and i had to cool and totally wash lid and liner and dry reheated for it to do it again. I had to add at least 8 tbsp oil (usually add 2) to meat for it not to foam. ok I have a GE Profile electric stove and on high it took 13 minutes to rock, and the old one took 7. with the old pressure cooker after that i would lower temp (stove has dial 1-9 then high) to 7. with this one you have to lower temp to 5 for it not to foam or spew liquid from around handle. i hope this follow up saves you the couple hours to figure it out yourself. once we got it worked out I am thinking this may be a good pressure cooker for frozen veggies. Buying a new gasket for my old model. I don't forsee doing a bigger roast in this one. it is too skinny and narrow.

UPdate: in new market for another pressure cooker. there are no gaskets for replacement on the market for this kind. My hubby even went to ace hardware and out of the many ones they have he couldn't find anything close and I even mailed a check to company that had address in users manual and they sent back the check saying they had no idea what i was even talking about and they didn't carry it either. ALSO this pressure cooker may be the most dangerous i have ever used. ONLY let the temp from naturally. if you cool under the sink hot liquids squirt out of the sides at full blast and have twice burned me even though i was not even touching the pressure cooker.

I did not like this product when I received it and took it from the box. I realized that it felt very cheaply made and I would not recommend this product to anyone.

Best Deals for Basic Essentials 5-Quart Polished Pressure Cooker

It works fine. It will not open if there is any pressure inside. The other safety features work well. It is well made. The anodizing is first-rate. It is not hard to clean. It is only $25. It is a no-brainer.

Unless you cook entire chickens or large hunks of meat, or cook for 4 or more people, it is a bit large for a cup of rice or beans. In that case there is an identical 3-cup version.

Bought this thinking it would be a good inexpensive cooker. It did not even make the first meal without the gasket blowing out the side of the lid. There is a hole manufactured in the side of the lid making this unable to hold any pressure at all even with the gasket properly installed. Avoid.

Suddenly, I feel like cooking again. Chopping onions, dicing carrots, making perfect juliennes with red peppers and mincing the garlic fine for my famous (!) vegetable medley is...effortless. All because of these knives. Ooh they are sharp! So be careful or you may end cutting yourself!

I love the fact that the knives are sharp right out the box. Many people swear by their forged knife blades but that makes the knives heavier. I have another set from Pinzon (Amazon's brand) and yet another from Cuisinart that I barely use as they are heavier and not as sharp as these knives. I think stamped blades are great as they are lighter and thinner like these Ginsu knives. If you cut vegetables more than meat then you need knives like these. For meat you need heavier blades with more balance and "brute force". For slicing a tomato so fine that you can see through it you need a Ginsu. With a Ginsu in your hand you'll end up sculpting roses from your radishes!

Update 11/5/08: I have been using these knives for 1.5 years now. They're still doing fine and are still very sharp. I regularly throw them in the dishwasher and they have not shown any signs of rusting. I love these knives and miss them if I am cooking somewhere else. I use the steak knives as everyday knives for slicing veggies and they work very well. If I ever purchase another set I will go with Ginsu again.

Update: 8/27/2013: Still using these knives after 6 years. Still going strong and are pretty sharp. Although we took to using some as box cutters and for other reasons and lost a few of the steak knives. Luckily, Amazon sells steak knives separately in packs of 4 Ginsu Essential Series 4-Piece 4.5-Inch Stainless Steel Steak Knife Set with Triple Riveted Polymer Handles 4805 so I ordered more.

We needed some new knives, but I couldn't see spending hundreds of $$$.

Yes, these are at the lower end and there are undoubtedly much better (and more expensive) sets out there.

But these feel OK, are very sharp (as other reviewers reported), seem to be sufficiently sturdy, and have ably carried out the various mundane tasks we've put them to.

For $24.99, what a value!!!

--------------------------------------

Update 11/21/08: We've had these 2 years now. The very sharp edges have gone, but the steak knives still are OK cutting, not great. But, I never sharpen them. I don't like the long thin knife (it's not serrated, so not a bread knife): the blade isn't stiff enough. (Hey, we're talking less than $30 for the set!) I really don't use the others.

I liked the steak knives so well that I ordered a second set of just them. It's a little weird at first doing paring with a serrated blade, but then you get used to it.

I'm still very pleased with the purchase overall and regard it, even as the price has increased a few dollars, as a true bargain.

Best Deals for Ginsu 04817 International Traditions 14-Piece Knife Set with Block

We bought this set 2 months back after reviewing them on Amazon. Since this is our first knife set I can not really compare with other name brand products in the market. But these were cheapest among the lot, and we are very pleased with their initial quality. As mentioned by other reviewers they are very very sharp, and easily cut through straight. The blades are thick and the handles look solid. We always wash/dry them by hand right after the use and never put them in dishwasher. We have not seen a single rust spot or any discoloration of handles. I will definitely buy more of these to gift friends and family.

Update on Sept 30, 2007:

After 6 months of use, I still stand by my review. The sharpness is intact and there are no rust spots at all. Very pleased with the quality and super low price. I regret not picking more of these from Sears Clearance, where I bought them for less than $20.

Update on Nov 26, 2010:

Just wanted to give a quick update that these knives are still performing great.

Sept 28, 2011:

Still going strong. No issues. No rust. the two knives that we use every single day, have lost some of their sharpness, but they still have few more years left in them.

Honest reviews on Ginsu 04817 International Traditions 14-Piece Knife Set with Block

If you are on a budget but need good sharp knives to last you for a little while...these are great! They are sharp and they do their job well. But be warned, these do rust after about 8 months if you aren't careful. I suggest washing after every time you use them and don't put them in the dishwasher to make them last longer. Other than that, they are sharp enough for general kitchen cutting,

Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Ginsu 04817 International Traditions 14-Piece Knife Set with Block

Okay, so we'll be honest here... These aren't the BEST knives ever. They aren't nearly as heavy and solid feeling as some might like.. but for this price you absolutely cannot get a better knife. I bought this set as a gift for someone who has a bit of a love-affair with "sharp knives"... and he was absolutely 100% pleased with this set. They are incredibly sharp and easy to manage. Best knives ever? Of course not-but do they get the job done (meaning, do they CUT well?) absolutely yes!

As a side note-in response to those who are complaining about rust spots-that is what happens when you put knives in a dish washer. All knives should always be washed BY HAND and dried immidiately (regardless of what the packaging says!) Complaining about rust spots after having put them into a DISHWASHER is like complaining about ruining your silk shirt after putting it into the washing machine. With proper care, these knives will not disapoint someone looking for a good, sharp everyday kitchen knife.

By chance, I had borrowed an OXO Goodgrips travel mug from my brother in law, and really liked it--not to mention it was the only travel mug I've ever used which didn't leak or drip whatsoever. I was going to buy one for myself but really wanted something just a little bigger than 12.5 ounces. So, I bought the LiquiSeal Thermal Beverage Container which I believe is approx 24 ounces. It's perfect! The only thing which I noted when I first bought it was the need to "exercise" the button a number of times, as it seemed like it wasn't opening or sealing totally at first, but it's working fine now. A word of caution: As it states in both the packaging and on the bottom label, DO NOT put this thing in the dishwasher. The heat will shrink and harden all the seal and cause it to leak. Great product!!

I got this mug for fathers day 2011 and within a few weeks of use the lid was hideous and had water stuck in it that could not be removed. It would appear that i had gotten the mug with the old single-piece lid even though recent reviews make it seem like the lid was redesigned earlier this year to be a two-piece system that allows for easier cleaning. So i called the company to ask about the situation since it was such a recent purchase and they told me to immediately throw away the lid and that they would send a replacement lid to me. The replacement lid arrived within a few weeks and sure enough it was the new redesigned two-piece system which is much easier to clean. I love this mug but I cannot give it 5 stars because it is not dishawasher safe....

To anyone having issues with your lid, please call OXO because they apparently do care about what you think. (800)545-4411

Had a difficult time finding a travel "mug" with this much capacity (about 24 oz) but this fits the bill perfectly. It doesn't keep the beverage steaming hot as long as a thermos when you are actively drinking from it but it keeps it warm enough for a good couple of hours.

Only issue is you have to be fastidious about cleaning this after beverages such as coffee because the sipping mechanism is complicated and has lots of nooks and crannies where having dried up coffee would not be a good thing.

Honest reviews on OXO Good Grips LiquiSeal Thermal Beverage Container

In general, the vessel is well built.

It just needs a simpler mechanism for allowing fluid flow through the cap so all surfaces are cleanable in the event that it sat for a couple of days and got moldy as did mine. So I don't use the flow-through button cap anymore. But while attempting to thoroughly clean it, I soaked it in dishwater and now, that dishwater has infiltrated the hollows in the cap and does not drain. It does, however, lend a smell of dishwater to my coffee.

I got this to take on my bike (just barely fits in a Topeak Modula Ex) since I was getting tired of having cold coffee halfway through class. It's a great size and the cap and button system work great. Unfortunately that same button system ruins the thermal insulation and greatly decreases the amount of time coffee stays hot. You can feel the rubber section in the middle start to heat up almost as soon as you fill it. It stays hot long enough for my purposes, but I'd go somewhere else if you're looking to have a hot cup of coffee 8 hours after filling it.

There's a good reason why the New York times reviewed this product and tagged it "The Mercedes of Pressure Cookers". This efficient piece of cookware is precision engineered and made in a modern Swiss factory where the best cookers have been made since the safe Durotherm was first developed here. On a visit to the factory we saw a clean, efficient facility which employs re-settled Tibetan refugees and uses robotics to shape these precision pots. The Duromatic factory adheres to high standards of European green manufacturing methods while producing a product as precision made as a Swiss watch.

The proof is in the cooking. We love our Duromatics, and have several in our home. For one thing it is quiet compared to older versions of pressure cookers, and safer due to several safety-release valves. When we cook things like split pea soup and roasted chicken we get perfect results with much less energy, heat, and cooking time than any other method of cookery. Once you cook artichokes this way you will never go back to your old method.

This particular size is ideal for most households and produces a family size meal in minutes. At the end it is all dishwasher safe.

WOW! have been using our Kuhn Rikon for about 5 years & can't imagine life without being able to make bean dishes anytime I want after work. Goodbye soaking, goodbye planning ahead. Hello spontaneous & speedy black-eyed peas, split pea soup & hummous from scratch.

Had been scared of pressure cookers. Lived in France in high school & remember ours exploding every couple of months spewing soup everywhere. Heard they'd "modernized" the cookers & then researched the heck out of all the ones on the market. Took the leap w/ this one because of the redundant safety features. Was terrified to try it the first time, but have never ever ever had it explode even when I've forgotten to turn it down after it got up to pressure (thanks to the automatic safety pressure-release).

And when you first taste how deeply spices penetrate curry dishes, soups and beans -you'll be hooked. Not one ounce of regret for spending the extra $$ for this ultra-safe "BMW-quality" cooker.

Best Deals for Kuhn Rikon Duromatic Top Model 3916 5 Quart Stainless Steel

So, I've never used a pressure cooker (PC) and was a bit afraid. I read about the electric PC's and decided the stovetop model was better because 1) gas is cheaper than electricity 2) no circuit board to break one week out of warranty and 3) I can brown meats in this monster before sealing the top. This is the Rolls Royce of pressure cookers from everything I read so I splurged and spent the money. Over 10+ years, what does $80 mean in all honesty?

Regarding the electric PC's. I read all the reviews and continually found people complaining about sealing problems, faulty buttons, the machine switching from pressure to warming mode, etc. Kuhn Ricon (KR) models have consistently received the most positive reviews, which sealed my decision. I've got enough electric appliances anyway.

As for safety, there is no way this thing is going to blow up unless you are clueless and don't follow simple instructions. If the pressure builds up too much, it automatically releases some steam through the spring-valve, the top of the line technology for PC's. Further, if it gets REALLY high, the rubber gasket is designed to bow outward and allow steam to escape through the side of the lid. In all, KR has five (5) safety features to protect you. Plus, you can't open it when even the slightest pressure remains. I tried to open it early, and no matter how hard I turned the lid, it wouldn't budge. This made me feel safe.

I prepared my first meal last night, lamb, and it turned out perfectly in just 12 minutes. Of course, you have to include 1) prep time (which is true no matter what method you use to cook a meal); 2) time to get to 15psi (about 5 minutes with 1/2 cup of water) and 3) natural depressurization (take it off the heat and let the pressure fall naturally) (this recipe warned against quick or even slow release) which took about 10 minutes. Still, given all this, it still was quicker than a slow cooker, range top, or regular oven (which I don't think would have worked for this recipe anyway).

Once I had the ingredients prepared, I browned the veal on the bottom with a little oil, dumped in the rest of the ingredients, added 1/2 cup of water (mandatory to build up the steam) and sealed it. Sealing is EASY, just line up the arrows, twist, and you're done. Now, I know KR makes models without the long handle and replaces it with two smaller grab handles at either side (model 3403 for example), but the long handle (it has a small grab handle on the other side) provides leverage to help in closing the top. This long handle also helps lift the cooker, as it is quite heavy (this is one solid sucker to be sure) and lifting it takes some effort, especially when full of food. It takes a little extra space to store, but believe me, it's well worth it. I've got plenty of pots with small grab handles, and they always get very hot and provide no leverage for lifting or closing.

This model (3916) has the Duromatic twist top vs. the pop-up type (model 3342 for example). I chose the 3916 because it is designed for people like me, who know nothing and want a little more flexibility in pressure release and pressure monitoring. It is super easy to see when one, then two, lines appear, even from across the kitchen. One line is 8 psi, two lines 15 psi, and if it goes over that, you can easily see that, too, and you know it's time to turn down the heat or remove it altogether until the two lines are exactly even with the top of the lid. Then, place it back. I'm sure with experience I'll learn exactly how low to turn my flame so I don't have to fuss with it. Until then, it's fun experimenting.

It is not Teflon, which is not a big deal to me because 1) Teflon always wears off and 2) it seems to flake when suffering at the higher pressure/temps a PC thrives on. So, it's probably better that it NOT be present. Read reviews of the electric PC's and you'll read a lot of "...the Teflon flakes and is worthless..." comments. Well, as stated, that's because at the temp/pressures achieved, Teflon seems not to hold up very well.

I just soaked mine overnight with soapy water and it cleaned up with a plain sponge.

The instruction manual is very good, with cooking times (general), how to use, and contact information. It has a cookbook with limited recipes, so if you're in this for the long haul, I would suggest Lorna Sass' books, or Miss Vickie's, although something about her irritates me (personal opinion obviously). But strangely, MV did recommend the KR or Fagor brands, so maybe I'll learn to love her.

In summary, this is a quality PC that is easy to use, that you can start cooking/browning/sautéing in (can't do that with an electric model, no matter which brand you get), and that is so safe NASA could take a lesson from KR.

Is it more expensive? Yes, it is. Is my health and safety worth the extra cost? Yes, they are. When you get right down to it, KR makes the best PC in the world (not me speaking, that's the NY Times, Miss Vickie, two independent websites, and even cookware stores I called to discuss different brands). If you want a quality piece of cookware, this is it. If you want to worry about buttons breaking, plugs to trip on, warming cycles when you should be in cooking mode, then spend $100 less and get the Cuisinart 600 series (lousy customer service from personal experience). The choice is yours.

Tonight it's lentil soup. Why not join me?

Honest reviews on Kuhn Rikon Duromatic Top Model 3916 5 Quart Stainless Steel

OK maybe not "life altering," but "diet altering," for sure. I purchased a Kuhn Rikon 3916 Duromatic Top Pressure Cooker, 5-Quart, on December 31, 2011, and have intended to write a review of the thing since the 2nd week that I owned it; the additional experience I've had with this pressure cooker (PC) since then has only reinforced the positive nature of my initial impressions.

Prior to my purchase, I'd developed a fairly long-standing taste for rice and bean dishes of different sorts, and always seemed to be opening [BPA-lined, it turns out] cans of heavily salted, precooked beans. As for the rice, I always seemed to be tearing open boxes of the rapid-cooking stove-top variety (seasoning packet included). I'd also depend on frozen meals for ready-made suppers after a particularly long day. Sure, I tried to pick the healthier brands, but have you seen how much salt those things contain? Eventually, I decided to look into a rice cooker, or slow-cooker for one-pot meals, and accidentally came upon a pressure cooker website. Turns out they're not used solely for canning jams and jellies!

After enthusiastically researching the subject, I ordered this item, and was pleased with the speed and condition it was delivered in very well and securely packaged. I immediately rinsed it off/out, and dove into the instruction manual in preparation for cooking a small roast with the usual vegetable suspects, to be cooked in two stages (roast first, then the vegetables). Please note that PCs hiss, spit, and whistle a little bit as small amounts of steam are released in order to maintain the correct pressure, but I didn't know that and thought something was wrong with the unit. I immediately called the manufacturer using the US-based "help" number provided in the manual, and had a very pleasant and humorous conversation with a Kuhn Rikon representative, who patiently answered all my questions. Thirty minutes or-so later, I was having a relatively decent meal.

I overcooked the roast; the vegetables were perfect.

Approximately 6 months later, and I can report that I've neither purchased nor consumed a frozen meal, or opened more than a few cans since I began using the KR Duromatic Top PC; on average, I probably cook with it at least 3 times/week, if not more so. It takes me longer to chop up a cabbage than it does to cook it same w/ various types of squash and root vegetables. I do still get carryout Thai food from time to time don't get me wrong but for quick meals/meal components comprised of various vegetables and/or legumes, this pot cannot be beat in terms of ease-of-use, speed, and convenience, and I'm probably eating healthier. More often than not, I'll cook-up enough of everything for several meals; I will say that folks at work have been impressed with the quality of my leftovers.

I have a ceramic-topped electric range, and though it takes a little experimentation to find the proper temperature settings and control response times, I can comfortably walk away from the kitchen once I've reached pressure, though I do set a loud timer and am always within hearing of the stove-top. So far, the seals and everything else are holding up fine, and about the only maintenance I've had to perform to date has been regular washing, the occasional oiling of the main gasket, and a light scrubbing on the inside of the pot with a steel-safe cleaner to remove mineral deposits. The item itself seems just as solidly constructed as the day I received it, and I view it as one of my better purchases; in fact, I'm sometimes a little embarrassed at how enthusiastically I recommend this product and method of cooking to my friends, family, and colleagues.

A couple of quick words of advice to any first-time PC users, if I might humbly offer them: since you're usually dealing w/ short cooking times, especially for vegetables, it's far better to err on the side of cooking something for too short a time rather than too long, and it helps to take notes once you've discovered the right times/settings. Also, there are lots of helpful websites out there offering preparation guidelines just execute a search for "pressure cooker timing" and you'll be led to some quality resources. I'll sometime cross-check the food I'm preparing from one site to another, then start with the shortest cooking time listed, if there's any variation. Finally, I find that the 5-quart size is perfectly fine for a good meal for 2-3 people, or for several meals for one person. It seems that it's far easier (and safer) to cook a small amount in a large pressure cooker than to cook a large amount in a small one, so it's best to "size up" rather than to purchase one that's too small.

Alright enough. I apologize for the interminable blathering on my part, but as I mention above, my enthusiasm for this PC and the method of cooking in general sometimes makes me carry on a bit.

Bottom line: for what it's worth coming from me, I wholeheartedly recommend the Kuhn Rikon 3916 Duromatic Top Pressure Cooker, 5-Quart size.

I had been searching for the ideal vessel to hold kosher salt on my kitchen counter, and this petite casserole is sturdy enough to do the trick. I was disappointed that this item isn't made in France like other Le Creuset products -it's from southeast Asia -but it still captures the essential Le Creuset style and adds some welcome color against my dark granite countertops.

I ordered this item with some trepidation as it was not well reviewed. My sense was the reviews were the result of initial color mis-shipments and it turns out that I received the blue item I ordered.

To be sure, it is barely larger than an ashtray but the design and color perfectly match other Le Creuset pieces. It would be good for custards or condiments or servings of fruit, vegatables, custard or pudding (yes, I know this is not conventional). Basically it is well priced for a quality product. It show both utility and decor. And earns its five stars.

I love Le Creuset cookware and when I discovered these little 8 ounce pots, I knew they would fill many uses. These petite stoneware covered pots are oven-proof, so you can bake individual dishes in them such as custards, pies and tarts, rice and pasta dishes. I also serve soups in them hot or cold. The lid helps retain the temperature of the contents. I also serve cheese spreads, hummus, and many other condiments or sauces in these little pots. You can create a tray of appetizers, snacks, and hors d'ouvres, using one or several different colored pots on a tray amid crackers and bread or whatever you choose. I have all the colors Le Creuset makes. On the Fourth of July I prepared a simple "red, white, and blue" presentation of dips and salsas. Whether you serve a group of food items or individual servings, the size is right. You will love these versatile little containers.

Honest reviews on Le Creuset Stoneware Petite Casserole

As an admitted Le Creuset devotee, this was a little splurge to store sea salt in while keeping it covered next to the stovetop. However, since receiving this charming little casserole, I can see the potential for all sorts of culinary uses for it as it is basically a very large ramekin with handles and a lid. I plan on ordering the 4-piece-set with cookbook as they are the perfect size to serve individual portions of oven-prepared dishes such as au gratin potatoes, apple/cherry crumble or french onion soup(at 8 ounce capacity, I would call this size a "cup" rather than a "bowl" of soup). It's also a great size for serving oatmeal in the morning for the kids! (Note that this is stoneware and not the cast iron version, so it is for oven use only and not for stovetop). Overall, a great little investment for a quality product with so many uses, especially if you like to serve smaller individual dishes at times. A nice addition to your Le Creuset collection!

There have been many good suggestions for using this adorable little pan, but I use mine daily to cook my steel-cut oatmeal. I can cook and eat out of the same pan, and if I am called away from my meal for any time, I cover it up with the lid to retain the heat. All of my cookware is Le Creuset, so obviously I'm a big fan of the brand. This little piece is so cute and so helpful for many things. Just love it.

I bought this cookware to use on the induction cooktop in my RV, and have not been disappointed. The removable handles and nesting of the various pieces result in very efficient storage, and the pieces are indeed nicely compatible with induction cooking (and can be used in a conventional oven with the handles removed). I purchased pot/pan protectors to separate the various pieces while nested -for both protection of the nonstick surface coating and to eliminate rattles while moving. While I can't address the durability of the nonstick coating after only a month of use, all of the pieces appear to be very high quality and I am optimistic that they will hold up well using wooden/plastic implements and hand washing. The handles attach and detach easily and are very secure while attached. I had some initial concerns when I noticed that the pots have a pouring lip that is not fully blocked when the lid is in place, but I've found that this small opening does not affect the steaming of veggies and allows one to easily drain water with the lid in place. Overall, I have no post-purchase regrets and recommend this cookware to others, especially if induction cooking and efficient storage is an important consideration.

We have now been using this set for 6 months. When we first received and began using them, the pans were perfectly nonstick so that food including eggs could be cooked without any oil, and cleaning was fast and easy. Unfortunately this is no longer true -the pan we've used most often now requires oil in order than food doesn't stick, despite hand-washing and following the manufacturer's other directions. If no oil is used, the pan is like a traditional pan and not only does food stick, but the pan requires prolonged soaking and scrubbing to get it clean. You must also be careful not to stack the pans (chipping and scratching).

The pan handles do not get hot, but the lid handles do, so be prepared to use a potholder to move the lids.

The set must be hand-washed and handled carefully to avoid chipping, but this is not a problem for us.

I would have rated the set 5 stars had it retained its nonstick performance. The loss of the nonstick capacity and the subsequent difficulty with cleaning the pans drops my rating to two stars.

1/3/10 Edited to add: We've now been using this set for a year and I've noticed several minute to small chips out of the cooking surfaces of more that half the pieces. We do not use metal utensils (silicon only) and are careful with cleaning and storing. One piece has also absorbed the smell of the food that was cooked in it. I am now looking for a different set of cookware, and regret buying this one. While I prefer a "green," eco-friendly product, I think this one needs some improvements in quality and design.

My wife recently began researching possible harmful items in our home, and asked me to get cookware without Teflon. Having grown up with non-stick pans, and having had a bad encounter with stainless steel, I was expecting this change to be a nightmare. Fortunately, I was pleasantly surprised.

I researched healthy alternatives to non-stick and came up with ionized aluminum, stainless steel, cast iron and ceramic coated cast iron. None of these seemed like a great choice. I then went to Bed Bath and Beyond to look at pans and discovered the Cuisinart Green line. After seeing the cast iron, I realized we probably would somehow damage our new glasstop stove as it was so heavy, so ceramic coated aluminum sounded great.

I settled on either Calphalon One infused ionized aluminum or the Cuisinart line. However, Bed Bath and Beyond is a bit confusing with the Cuisinart line. They sell Cuisinart "Greenware" as a set and Green "Gourmet" as individual pieces. The Green Gourmet set is a bit more expensive, and I was advised by the salesperson not to buy GreenWare as it has a rough bottom that may scratch a glass top stove. He offerred to order a Green Gourmet set, but I decided to buy one Caphalon and one GreenGourmet frying pan and test them before investing in a set. I honestly didn't expect either to work as well as my non-stick pans.

I generally only cook breakfast on the weekends, so I cooked what I know how to cook. I took both pans and set the burner at the same setting (6 on my stove which is the setting I used for the non-stick pans). I made pancake batter and used an organic olive oil cooking spray. Interestingly, the Cuisinart pan was too hot at 6 so the pancakes burned and I had to set the stove at 4 to get the same results as the 6 on the Calphalon pan. Both pans were great with the pancakes--better than my non-stick pan and probably the prettiest looking pancakes I have ever made. The Cuisinart pan was very easy to clean, but the Calphalon took a bit more effort. On another day, I cooked eggs. Again using the same Olive Oil spray. The eggs immediately stuck to the Calphalon pan. Having read instructions on using cast iron and waiting for the eggs to "release", I waited, and waited and waited. What a mess! I couln't get the burnt eggs off the pan. Of course as soon as I put the pan in the sink with water, they popped right off so clean up was easy. I'm sure there is a correct way to cook eggs on this pan, but I couldn't do it after 4 tries. On the Cuisinart Pan, I had no problem, and surprisingly, the eggs seemed to be easier to turn over than on our old Farberware non-stick.

So after this, I decided to get the Cuisinart and ordered from Amazon which was $50 cheaper than the price quoted by the Bed Bath and Beyond salesperson who offerred to order it for me.

I agree with those who said that this cookware worked well only in the beginning. After only five months of regular use and following all manufacturer's instructions when caring for the set, the coating began to chip off. I sent one of the pots back to Cuisinart, but still haven't received a replacement. Whenever I call I am told that this item is currently not available and they don't know when I will get a new pot. I've been waiting for over five months already. For this amount of money I would expect the set to last more than half a year. If you need a "disposable" set, then I guess Cuisinart is a good idea. Also, do not expect Cuisinart to rush with the replacement. As for nonstick surface, well it's no longer so. Even though the idea of creating a green line cookware is something lots of us had been waiting for, the quality of this set is very poor.

Honest reviews on Cuisinart GG-12 GreenGourmet Hard-Anodized Nonstick 12-Piece

We've had this pan now for over a year. We bought it because we were trying to be environmentally and health conscious. Over that time, the pan turned from somewhat disappointingly sticky to a tragic mess. We seasoned it repeatedly, we never used harsh abrasives on it, but every time we use it, it gets worse. Grease sticks to it and the "safe" sponges and brushes do nothing to remove the residue. We simply can't get it clean. Food sticks to it like crazy --pancakes, eggs, potstickers, whatever I happen to be cooking.

It's come to the point where we're using as much or more oil than we would on a regular skillet, only we can't get this one clean. Avoid it unless you want to be buying another skillet in a year or two, like us. I really was hoping for a sustainable alternative to teflon, but this one just makes me angry.

The Cuisinart Green Gourmet Eco-Friendly cookware is great! Heats evenly, does not need heavy oils, butter, or sprays to cook in (once seasoned). Cleans very easily also with little effort. I would have given these products a 5 star rating, but 2 of the pans I bought from Bed, Bath and Beyond had to be return/replaced because they had some strange shading in the coating. I was unsure if that would affect the life or use of the product and returned for replacement. I have had no problems with any other of these pans that I have bought elsewhere, it may have just been the batch sent to that store, so I can definitely say I recommend this cookware. One note, if you are a "put everything in your dishwasher" kind of person, you will not like how these look or wear if you do that. I use to be that way and have now gotten use to hand washing these wonderful pans and my new set of knives to extend their life and use. Go green!

This book has some fine recipes in it, but I'm only giving it three stars because it appears to be more of a marketing tool than a collection of recipes. It does contain many helpful hints for the use and care of Le Creuset cookware, but the recipes are arranged according to various Le Creuset products (french ovens, buffet casseroles, tagines, skillet grills, etc.) Less experienced cooks may be led to believe that one must use only the Le Creuset product listed for each recipe. This slender volume is sometimes included as a free bonus when buying various Le Creuset items, and that would give it five stars. As a stand-alone volume, it falls short.

This is a very versatile non stick skillet. The size is medium so not too heavy but big enough to say scramble eggs for 4. I use it for everything from grilling sandwiches to finish pasta in sauce and for making chicken piccata or other dishes with a sauce, etc. etc. Love it and use it lots so I bought a second.

After years of soaking and scrubbing the pan used for scrambled eggs, I finally got smart and ordered the 9-inch nonstick French skillet by All Clad. What a fabulous pan it has made clean up incredibly easy! All it takes is a quick wipe with a paper towel and into the dishwasher it goes! This is a great sized pan and could easily handle eggs for 4-6 people. I am sold on All Clad cookware I have found it cooks evenly and lasts forever! I have no concerns about the non-stick coating wearing off and am so glad I finally have this product in my kitchen.
