Best Benecasa BC-17670 Stainless Steel Stock Pot, 20-Quart Deals

Benecasa BC-17670 Stainless Steel Stock Pot, 20-Quart

I ordered this pot for cheese making. A pot with a 20 quart capacity should be sufficient for recipes using up to 4 gallons of milk. All of the recipes I've made thus far use 3 gallons (12 quarts) plus a pint of cream....and that fills the pot to within 2 inches of the top (7.5" of a 9.5" pot). Clearly even another gallon would not fit. By my calculation that makes this pot 16 quarts. It's a decent pot if you need something that will not hold heat around whatever you are making, but it is not 20 quarts.

This item is stainless steel, but paper thin. I can bend the walls of the pot with moderate finger pressure. The lid warped the first time it was used, and to get a good seal I have to put a heavy item on top of it. Within a few uses, spots of corrosion have formed on the inside of the pot, giving off a strong metallic odor and blooming with black rust. I would not purchase this item again, nor would I recommend anyone else do so.

This is a 16-quart stock pot! I don't know why this seems to be a problem, but I actually got this stock pot because a reviewer for a different model said they had this same problem, receiving a 4 gallon instead of a 5 gallon. So don't buy this if you are expecting 20 quarts.

Also, it can be tough to tell, but it seemed like it was actually made of aluminum! No where on the metal did it say whether it was actually stainless. It is EXTREMELY thin, and when I filled it up all the way with water to test for its capacity, I lifted it up into the sink to dump out the water and I felt the bottom bow from the pressure! Extremely shoddy.. I would really recommend to get a different stock pot.

UPDATE: What happened to the price of these? I bought them at $2.59 a box, and now I come back to reorder more and the price has gone up FIVE TIMES what it was before. THATS a 500% INCREASE in price!!! What is going ON here????

Original Review: These cups are a little pricey (though super-saver shipping helps), AND are a tad too big for most tins (but will work if you're careful), but they NEVER stick no matter how much applesauce you use in your recipe! The best quality cups I have ever used. I order six boxes at a time to save on shipping. Muffins rule (and cupcakes are for sissies)!

I have previously used paper baking cups and have had a horrible time getting them separated. Even though I purchased them in bulk, I eventually gave up and decided to purchase the PaperChef Culinary Parchment Baking Cups. I'm glad I did. They are super easy to get separated and are worth every penny. That are a bit thicker feeling than the standard plain white paper cups. The size was good for most standard sized muffin tins. They were great for a couple of muffin pans I had, however, another pan was a bit smaller (had more of a slant to it). But still well fitting for most. If you are looking for baking cups or liners for jumbo sized muffins, take a look at the PaperChef Culinary Parchment 30 X-Large Baking Cups. Definitely recommended.

I will probably skip the fancy decorated baking cups from now on. I love these. Cake does not stick to them like regular baking cups. Who wants to leave any delicious cake on the cupcake wrapper?

Honest reviews on PaperChef Culinary Parchment 60 Large Baking Cups

These are awesome! I do a good bit of gluten free baking. Every other cup I have tried you leave half of the muffin left in the wrapper. These don't stick at all. You actually get to eat the entire muffin down to the last crumb!

I really love these liners. Nothing sticks to these babies! I bake quite a few gluten free, dairy free items and had a bit of trouble with the muffins/cupcakes sticking to traditional liners. These liners have solved my problem. Highly recommend.

The pots work fine and large pot make four dozon tamales at a time did not use smaller pots for tamales but they worked well for soups and chicken and dumplings oh also watch water closely while cooking tamales the pots are thin and water cooks out fast have to add water every 30 min are so but other than that cooks nicely

Product arrived very fast. I use it to steam corn on the cob (17 minutes of steam time). I cut off the stem end of the corn at the widest part, and steam the corn with husks and silks still on. When done, use an oven mitt to grasp corn by tops of husks and silks and shake the corn cob free. All silks are automatically removed and the corn has that wonderful cooked-in-the husk flavor.

We have a 7 1/2 foot ceiling and little space in our 10 X 12 kitchen. Some say you cannot have too many cabinets but I beg to differ. We have lots of cabinets things get lost in so we took out a cabinet that just jutted out into space over a counter top and put in this amazing Enclume rack. It only hangs down 8 inches from the ceiling and will take both toggle screws and regular screws. WE put in 2 long toggles and 4 heavy duty bolt like screws which came with it and I could hang from it. We have an eclectic kitchen and although some say this is more of an industrial look the warmth of the steel blended in just fine with our copper pots and rich medium oak cabinets and stainless steel frig. We like things out where we can see them and display wooden spoons on our walls and hang our knives on a rack and now our pots are out where we can just grab and start cooking. Cannot say enough, know it will last forever and love the basic design. Thanks Amazon!!!

It's a durable piece, that's for certain. Heavy and solid when mounted to the ceiling with those super-toggle things that it comes with. Note that they only included four toggles with mine but it requires six I had to buy two more for about $2. For your reference, if you are mounting to studs they do include all six lag bolts.

Also, you may want to know that it came with 18 hooks, I remember wondering about that when I ordered. 12 of the angle hooks and 6 straight hooks.

I do not know how they achieved this finish it's like a mild black oxide that's frozen in it's current state by a waxy substance. A really handsome look. But it's basically just steel bar stock that has been expertly formed, so keep that in mind... you're paying for the workmanship, not the materials. Don't be alarmed when you look at it and say "this is just steel bar stock! Why was it so expensive?"

It's expensive because it takes special tools and many years of experience to make it look like that. Only Enclume still makes things like this.

This rack has a hugh capacity and is a beautiful addition to the kitchen. It has a great attachment system; when I installed it, it supported my weight (which is more than all the pots and pans I will put on it).

Honest reviews on Enclume PR13wg-HS Premier Low Ceiling Rectangle with Grid, Hammered

My hubby went on a photography gig and was in someone's home who had a pot rack hanging over the kitchen island. He came home and told me about how neat it looked and the idea clicked that we had the perfect kitchen to add such a tool. Our kitchen has no walls into the living/dining area as they were cut down to a breakfeat bar and knee wall about 10 years ago. We started pricing pot racks at various retailers in the area and found them to be priced at about $500 with a 4-week lead time on delivery from Enclume. I found the same pot rack for less money on Amazon and it was delivered within 2 days. I even selected the less expensive shipping option of 3-5 business days. When the box was delivered, I was impressed at the high quality of the item when I unpacked it. This is really a very high quality rack and worth the money. We found our studs to mount it from and ended up running into a little issue with 2 of the holes since there were support braces under those 2 holes for the half roof over the kitchen. After 2 trips to the hardware to buy titanium drill bits to drill through the braces, we were successful in mouting the rack to the ceiling. As of this morning, the rack still hangs and the roof hasn't collapsed! I could not be happier with our Enclume pot rack.

I have had an Enclume pot rack for years, but in our new place we only have 8' ceiling and I needed to find a pot rack for a lower ceiling. This one is beautiful, and I know I will just love it.

It's hard to find small cooking spoons with a short handle like this. I have had no problems with breakage so far. Of course, these tools are meant to use when cooking smaller things. I would not try to turn a pot roast with the flipper, for instance but it works great for burgers and chops in my sauté pan . Also, because it is fairly stiff and sharp-edged, the flipper makes a great in-pan chopper for fresh mushrooms and such. The spoon is just right when working in a smaller saucepan. I have ordered three sets so far, mostly for the small spoon. I would not use on the grill, or leave propped over/in a pan on a gas stove. My stove is electric induction, and my pans do not get too hot up the sides, so no heat problems for me. 4 stars because I can see how others might find these too brittle for their use. Just have to use a light hand!

This grill pan made my turkey burgers taste as though I had grilled them outdoors.

I have been looking for an alternative to the lightweight grill pans (which end up losing their coating and subsequently start sticking) and my George Foreman grill (which is an older model and so frustrating to clean because of the non-removable grills) and decided to try Emeril's grill pan. I just finished my first experiment with it....simple grilled chicken breasts.....and I have to say I am thrilled with the pan. I have a ceramic cooktop and the grill heated up very nicely so that when I put the chicken breasts into the pan, they immediately started to sizzle. The chicken did not stick at all and came out beautifully with perfect grill marks on each side. I am still letting it cool off since it retains its heat for a long time, so can't report on the cleaning process, but it says to wash with hot water only and a stiff brush. The only downside is the weight of the pan, but that's to be expected from any cast iron pan. In my younger days it wouldn't have mattered but I have to use two hands to lift the pan comfortably...not a big deal!

This cast iron grilling-cooking pan is terrific! Received it as a bonus gift and love it. In our home, we've cooked with cast iron all of our lives and this is THE BEST cast iron skillet I've used.

Pros: Wavy grill bottom to pan that creates grill marks using indoor heat source and creates more surface for other dishes--just cooked cornbread dressing in the pan and it browned dressing nicely

Great price at ~$28

Cleans up easily--it was no problem to clean the first time, although I did "season it" before first use

You can authentically shout "BANG" when you cook!

Cons: Very heavy skillet which is bulky to handle and clean

Dense, so the heating time is longer that thinner cast iron skillets and may take longer overall for your recipe to cook

Nice look, good quality, great concept. Turn one way get salt and turn other way and get peppers. You can adjust granule size on bottom. You pull top off to replace what you need. No instructions in box. I would highly recommend this product.

I have only had this for a day, but I already like it. You turn it right for pepper and left for salt. It has two grinding holes in the bottom so you can set how course or fine you want for either one. It's not too big and not too small and it came already filled with S&P. I like the Red color and rubber grip too. It feel very sturdy and should last a long time. I will update my review if I ever have any problems with it, but I don't see that happening.

Update:July 24, 2013 I went to fill this S&P shaker up today and it was a pain to get the top off. Once I finally got it off it I noticed a crack on the side of the top. Also the red rubber BODUM that goes around the top gets a little stretched out and slides around really easily now. When I bought it, it wasn't $30 bucks. Anyways it would be nice if they would have made it so there was a button or something to take the top off because it isn't easy. i still like it I just hope the crack doesn't get bigger. i put some superglue on it. i hope it helps.

Honest reviews on Bodum Twin Dual Salt and Pepper Grinder

This salt shaker is perfect. It's made of silicone rubber and stainless steel, two materials that would definitely deserve to be on my desert island. Refilling it is ridiculously easy. Just pull the top, pour in, and put it back on. Clockwise for pepper, counterclockwise for salt. For what little room it does take up on the table, it looks really attractive. Some other moron rated it lower because it had a tapered shape. Dude, seriously? Seriously?

This is a nice add to the counter for use in cooking. Both sides of the grinder work well. The oblong shape fits well in the hand. The red band makes it non slip. It's easy to add pepper and salt... no tools required and no small parts to lose. A winner on all accounts.

We use these beverage glasses more than any if our other Marquis glassware. An elegant way to serve everything from water to coke to beer. I was worried they would show up broken, but my two boxes were packaged well and completely intact. Now if only I can keep my husband and maid from breaking them (they are why I ordered two more boxes).

These are really nice, but I gave it a 4 instead of 5 because they aren't perfect for the price/quality. Nice size, but the proportions are a little off. We have tons of Marquis by Waterford and LOVE all the stemware. These are nice because they go with the set. I highly recommend them for water and have heard the actual water glasses break very easily.

Honest reviews on Marquis by Waterford Vintage Iced Beverage Glasses, Set of 4

Glasses were fine.

However, one of 12 glasses had a broken stem when received. There was no practical way to make a claim for this unless I returned a set of four, which would involve more expense and hassle than one glass was worth.

Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Marquis by Waterford Vintage Iced Beverage Glasses, Set of 4

I ordered three different type of glasses for a Christmas present. The other two were fine but when my wife was wrapping this set it seemed to feel different so she opened it and found that the packaging was not the same as in the other two sets. The cardboard separator was missing and two of the glasses broke during shipment. Since this was a Christmas present there was no reason to open the box when it arrived and normally we would just have put on Christmas wrapping paper. By the time we discovered the breakage we were beyond the return period (which was October 16). The return page states that you can return a purchase even though it is beyond the return period. I did this and pointed out the damage and the fact that it is unreasonable to expect a customer to open every package they receive from Amazon when that package appears fine from the outside and you hate to damage the box just to see if there is a broken product inside. I further stated that I did want the full 4 glass set and would like it sent to me.

Amazon's order history report shows the return of the product on 12/20/2012 and that the status was "complete". To me "complete" meant that they had taken care of the problem but we never received the 4 glasses and the Amazon records no longer reflect the order.

I finally wrote to the Office of the President at the Seattle address but the letter was returned stating that it was not deliverable as addresses.

The product itself is fine but someone removed the padded separator and shipped it to me with almost a 100% probability that one or more of the glasses would be damaged.

As a long time customer I am totally fed up with the service I didn't get on this purchase and have changed my mind in general about Amazon.

I realize that you only want complaints of this sort on the feedback page but I hope that you might pay attention here.

I am very glad that I finally picked up this piece! I have several Lodge pieces and they are all very important pieces in my kitchen.

I would like it to be a little bit larger and was also kind of hoping it would come with some basic cooking instructions. But, since I am fairly experienced with cast iron, I didn't have a hard time figuring out the best way to use this pan.

If anybody out there is thinking about getting it, or has already purchased this pan and has yet to master it, here is what I have come up with -

1) Preheat your oven (I use 450F for cornbread). THEN, put a small amount of butter (or whatever fat it is that you prefer) in the wedges and kind of brush it around so that it will coat both the sides and the bottom. Put the pan in the preheated oven to get it nice and hot.

2) Meanwhile, have your cornbread batter ready to go. I found that it takes about half of the recipe that I was using in an 8" square Pyrex previously. Take the pan out of the oven (I have one of those Lodge skillet handle potholders that works great). IMMEDIATELY, spoon the batter into the wedges. I have found (through trial & error) that filling each well to about 3/16" from the top works great. Get it right back in the oven. For me, 15-16 minutes baking time seemed to be about perfect.

As long as you heat up the pan and the fat that you use in the pan (I prefer a little tiny bit of butter in each well), it will cook evenly and nothing will stick to the pan. I mean, there isn't even residue in the corners or anything. The pan looked clean when I removed the cornbread. I did this several times with identical results.

One more hint for the day If you want to additionally season the pan (I did this before the first time I used it), scrub it out and dry it VERY well. Place a thin coat of Crisco over every surface of the pan. Don't slather it on thickly, and be sure that the top surfaces don't have any excess (I gently run a paper towel over the top ridges of the pan). Preheat the oven to 400-425F. Put the pan in the oven upside down, so that there is less surface area on the oven rack, and leave it in the hot oven for at least an hour. Turn off the oven, leaving the pan inside to cool of its own accord. You will have a beautifully seasoned pan that doesn't have the residue that you get using oil.

This is the only pan that can produce a corn muffin that is crunchy on all sides. The finish also eliminates the need for seasoning the pan. Just be certain to lubricate the corners throughly.

Best Deals for Lodge L8CB3 Pre-Seasoned Cornbread Wedge Pan

I bought this pan for making scones and while I have only used it once so far, I couldn't be happier with it! The scones baked faster and came out crisper than baking them on a cookie sheet.

Just a few comments on the use of this pan. According to the Lodge website, you should NOT put the pan into a hot oven. Instead you should first grease the pan, then put it into the oven at the start of the preheating, letting the pan preheat slowly while the oven does. Once the oven is hot, pull out the pan, fill being careful not to burn yourself, then put the pan back into the oven. This method was great for the scones, since they started to rise as soon as the dough hit the hot pan!

I had to run a knife around the edge of each wedge to get the scones out of the pan, but they didn't stick. I imagine as the pan gets more seasoned over time, the wedges should pop out easier. I have a cast iron bread pan that I have used twice weekly for 8 months now and all I do is tip the pan over and the baked bread just falls right out.

I cleaned this pan easily with a dish rag and hot water NO SOAP. Found the rag was easier to get into the corners than a sponge. DO NOT SOAK cast iron pans as they will rust. If this happens, as it has to me, you need to re-season the pan. To do this, first scrub off the rust with a rag or scrubber making sure to dry the pan very well. Next you coat the pan with a thin layer of shortening, wiping off any excess. Then put the pan upside down into a hot oven (350 or 400 degrees) and bake for an hour. I put a sheet of foil on the rack beneath the pan to catch the shortening drips. When done, turn off the oven and let the pan cool a bit before taking out. Pan will be very hot!

I am thrilled with this pan and the fact that it is made in the USA is an added benefit!

Honest reviews on Lodge L8CB3 Pre-Seasoned Cornbread Wedge Pan

First off, let me start by saying I'm a cast iron fan. I currently own two cast iron skillets, with plans for a third (I'll get to that in a second). I don't mind cleaning or seasoning them -it's worth it.

Second, this makes great cornbread. No real complaints there.

But this thing is ridiculous. The preformed wedges leave difficult-to-clean corners where food gets trapped and refuses to come out. Cornbread doesn't cause much of a cleaning problem, if the pan is seasoned and lubricated properly, but I tried making a version of a pineapple upside-down cake, and I was scrubbing melted brown sugar residue out of this thing with a toothbrush for an hour.

Granted, this is primarily a cornbread pan, so I guess it's my fault for trying something else in it (although the description does say "cornbread, scones, and more.") But I wanted to make this thing less of a one-trick-pony.

Which brings up another point. Most cornbread recipes I can find are for a 10" skillet (without partitions). Not only does that mean breaking out my high-school math book to calculate volume changes, it also means that cooking times change, particularly due to the additional heated metal of the partitions baking the cornbread from all angles. One recipe was done in half the time it was supposed to be. Granted, this can be a good thing once you're used to it, but getting there will leave a trail of blackened cornbread in your path -and several hours of scrubbing.

So bottom line: this does make some fine cornbread, but it's a unitasker if there every was one, it's tough to clean, and it will mess with your recipes. Personally, I plan on switching to a standard 10" cast-iron skillet. But if you make a lot of cornbread, don't try new recipes, and just want it done fast and easy, this will work out fine.

Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Lodge L8CB3 Pre-Seasoned Cornbread Wedge Pan

I've had this pan for about 2 months. I bought it in my quest to make the "best ever" cornbread. It took me a few batches to figure out what works best, and what recipe works wellbut I did it! Yesterday I made 2 batches of fantastic cornbread wedges! :) And, with the 2nd batch, not a single crumb stuck to the panso I could put it away without having to do any work cleaning it! The cornbread came out tender on the inside, lightly browned all over, and such a light, crisp crust. Mmmm!

My tips: (granted I'm a cast iron novice, but this is what worked for me)

-I lightly coat the wedges with shortening (I put my hand inside a ziploc bag and spread it that way)

-Put it in a cold oven, turn on to 450ยบ

-Make the batter (Cook's Illustrated Southern Cornbread recipe is PERFECT, and fits this pan exactly)

-Carefully take pan out of the oven, put a tiny bit of butter in each wedge (I dropped a small piece in, and it melted immediately)

-Fill each wedge with 1/4 cup batter (I used 2 scoops with a medium cookie scoop)

-Bake 21 minutes or until lightly browned

-Remove from pan & set on a wire rack until eating

I can't wait to make this again!

In an age of coated, darkened and fancy pants, cake pans, it's nice to get something that bakes evenly and doesn't have a coating that flakes off. I am impressed at how evenly cakes bake without developing a heavy crust. The pans must be hand washed to maintain a non reactive surface, but it's small price to pay. They were shipped to me, overnight and helped to finish a baking project I was in the middle of. Reasonable price for great performing pans that will last a lifetime and still look like new.

No.1 a nice shiny finish (no more over baked crust, takes less time to cool, and better heat distribution).No.2 these cake pans have a nice straight side (makes a nice layer cake). No. 3 they come in different depth, and size. No.4 not over priced. No.5 comes from amazon (could not find them in a local store).No. 6 these pans have a nice weight. With normal care they should last for many years.

Many chefs recommend brushed aluminum cake pans because they produce the most consistent cakes. The dark pans absorb too much heat, the shiny ones reflect too much heat. So these are the "sweet spot" of cake pans and they are also made of the thick aluminum with rolled edges that are easiest to handle. They worked great for me, and Amazon offered them at a very competitive proce.

I've been in the market for some real cake pans (heavy duty and straight edged, no more cheap ones that stack well, but ha e slightly sloped edges) I decided that rather than picking a brand and getting the sizes I wanted, I'd get one each of the two best reviewed brands I could find. After reading reviews, it came down to Parrish Magic Line and USA Pans, so I ordered a 9" pan of each and baked a layer cake. The USA Pans one came out great it was very evenly baked and even the top came out very level and even (I'd done the drop it on the counter from 3-4" up several times to even out and remove bubbles method for both cakes). The Magic Line pan's cake had higher center while I was peeking through the oven door during baking and then a significantly dipped center by the time it came out. The coloring was also uneven. If USA Pans came in a better assortment of sizes, I'd order more today. Unfortunately, all the USA Pans have are 2" deep 8, 9, and 10" pans whereas Parrish is available in 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, and 3" depths and 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, and 15" diameter pans (possibly more, but those are the ones I know of with certainty). I'm definitely going to use USA for the basic sizes, but Parrish will work for the more varied sizes, I think. I'm ordering a 6" Magic Line one today and I'll update this is my experience with it is any different. USA Pans Aluminized Steel 9 Inch Round Layer Cake Pan with Americoat

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I'll start off with a disclaimer, that as a Vine member, this set was sent to me free to review. Now, I happen to be a bit of a knife snob. I've used a lot of knives and personally prefer Japanese made knives (Shun and Global are two brands here on Amazon that are quite good). However, I do use German knives from time to time as there are some types of knives that don't tend to be made by the Japanese makes.

Wusthof is well known for making some very good quality knives, and the Classic is one of their better lines. I find the German knives rather heavy in general but I was pleasantly surprised to find that these are fairly well balanced and nice to hold. The sharpness out of the box was good and holds up well if properly cared for and used. This set includes the 6-inch chef's knife, 4-1/2 inch utility and a 3-1/2 inch paring. Also included are shears and a block with spaces for just these items. Clearly the chef knife is the star of the group and the one you would use the most. My biggest issue is with the short 6-inch length. If you have very small hands, this size may be okay, but really a larger knife is more ideal for most people. It's a bit short for larger items, but it may be okay if you don't do a whole lot of cooking. The paring knife is very nice and certainly will do that job well, no complaints there. The utility, well, that's a size I'm not sure is hugely useful, there's very little that couldn't be handled either by the smaller parer or the larger chef's knife, particularly since it's a fairly small chef. There are a lot of other kinds of knives most people would find more useful to round out a set. A decent bread or sandwich knife, a boning knife, or even a nice cheese knife. Maybe a good carving knife or even a cleaver. This is just one of those knives that no one particularly needs, but gets thrown into sets like this, because it fits in the smaller slots on the knife block.

The shears are pretty good ones, I like that they come apart for easy washing, I like the Wustof shears compared to other brands. If you've never had good kitchen shears before, you'll love having these, I particularly like them for cutting up chickens or trimming fat off roasts. They're a welcome addition to any set.

The other problem I have with this set though is simply that the knife block is so small. If you are really, really sure you aren't going to want any other knives than these, than this block may be okay. The name "studio" clearly means this is a set intended for really tiny kitchens that don't have much room, but in any case where you have room for a block at all, it only makes sense to invest in a large one that you can add more utensils to. You can't for instance, put a bread knife or honing blade into this block, it's simple too small and doesn't have the slots or length for these items. It's basically a choice between spending less and getting a set that might not have the best types of knives for your needs, like this one, whereas IMO it's often a better choice to buy your knife block separately and load it with the best knives for what you need and will use.

So those are my caveats about this set and why I'm rating it fairly low. The quality of the knives is pretty good, even 4+ stars (although again, in my opinion, it doesn't match Japanese made knives like Shun). But the chef's is too small for most people to use comfortably and not good for larger items, the utility knife is really unnecessary, and the block too small and limited. Within these constraints, this still might be a great set for the right person. The price certainly makes it an attractive gift option as well. But I don't think it's the most ideal set for most, even just looking at the Wushtof Classic line. You might want to consider something like the Create-A-Set Knife Storage Block and then add a starter set like this Wusthof 9755 Classic 2-Piece Knife Starter Set. You get the much larger and more useful 8-inch cook's knife, and a block with room for other knives as you can add them.

UPDATE: Currently this knife set is a fair bit lower in price than when I added my review, which does make this a much better buy than when it closer in price to the combination I listed above. I've left my original rating but I'd probably bump it up to 4 stars at the current price. Given that prices on this set and others can change regularly, consider the points raised in the review and your personal needs and budget when shopping. If this set stays at a good price point, it's definitely worth considering and is a great value. It's not my personal pick for a knife set but if you don't have a lot to spend, it would be at the top of the list to consider. It's definitely better to invest in a couple really nice sharp knives, than spend the same amount on a large set of poor quality ones!

Great knives won't make you a great cook. But they may help good cooks enjoy cooking more. Expense has been a barrier, but this new set helps lower that barrier.

Here are the details of the contents of this set (the number following the / is length in cm):

* 3.5" blade Classic Paring Knife (4066/9) with 4" long handle; 2 oz.

* 4.5" blade Classic Utility Knife (4066/12) with 4" long handle; 2.3 oz.

* 6" blade Classic Cook's Knife (4582/16) with 5" long handle, 5.8 oz.

* Pull-apart Kitchen Shears (5558-1)

* Wood (Maple) Block (7250-7)

Excellent knives, good value in a set of the most frequently used knives. Excellent kitchen counter space saver. I paired it with the Wusthof 1550 Classic 7 Inch Hollow Ground Santoku Knife With Board that comes with an 8"x12" bamboo cutting board, on which the block and Santoku knife can be kept along side for ready use and still have a footprint of about the size of a standard sheet of paper. Probably should add a scabbard, maybe the Wusthof blade guard 8 cooks, to protect the Santoku knife edge when not in use and avoid accidents, but I think I'll wait until the first cut...

For the present, Amazon is one of the few stores carrying this set.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program While the Wusthof Classic 5-Piece Studio Knife Set is not high end cutlery by any means, it is a reasonably well made set with good quality steel that will hold an edge. I own several Wusthof kinfs other than this set and I'm not sure they are of equal quality. The block is a little on the "rough" side fit and finish wise and the balance of the knifes is a little off. Still, the selection of knifes is good for the beginner and the blades do look to be Wusthof steel. I have to disagree with some reviewers about the sheers. A good set of kitchen sheers is a must for me. Boning poultry, stemming large greens and opening packages are just a few of the things they are needed for. While this set isn't going to make you an Iron Chef, it's a big step up from Ginsu.

Honest reviews on Wusthof Classic 5-Piece Studio Knife Set

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program Knife Review:

If you're looking for a pure knife review here you go: They worked fine. The chop, slice, julienne all worked as expected. These blades were tested out during the holiday rush dinner for both Thanksgiving and Christmas, where they served aptly. The chef's knife had enough heft to work well through both hard veggies like carrots, celery, potatoes (russet and sweet). Acorn squash was a little more difficult because the knife was simply too short. The Utility and Paring knives, separated by only an inch, are really the same knife in my eyes. They both worked well enough for the finer jobs. I found the paring knife to be a bit light and the weight balance felt a little off, but that may just be a personal preference (it simply didn't feel heavy enough).

Other bits:

The shears well they're shears. They worked well enough for their designed function. They were able to cut through the turkey's breast cavity with no issue. The split-apart nature made clean up very easy.

The storage block has a small footprint which is very appreciated in my limited counter space environment.

The utility factor:

The only thing I don't really like about this "starter set" is the 6" chef's knife. It just feels too short. My smallest chef is a 8" (which I barely use because of the length) my go-to is a 10". I would say that you could pick up this set and add the Victorinox 40521 10-Inch Chef's Knife, Black Fibrox Handle, but I get the feeling that you'd end up primarily using the Fibrox while the "pretty knives" sat in their storage block.

Also, the paring and utility knives are pretty much the same knife (assuming these were your only knives). I think Wusthof would have done better to include a bread knife instead of the paring.

This is just about the best little knife block I can imagine. I have had Wusthof knives for many years and I really like them. They are of high quality, are easy to grip and very sharp. And they can last a lifetime and look very professional.

Personally, I think this is an amazing set. I actually prefer the 6 inch cook's knife over larger ones. The larger ones just get too heavy and take up too much space (also need a larger cutting board). I like the utility knife a lot, this is the knife I use most of the time. And the knife block is really cute. It takes up just the space it needs which is great if you have a small kitchen or simply not much space to spare for a giant knife block. Personally, I actually have additional knives that I store in a drawer. I like to have just the most frequently used ones handy and don't want to waste my precious counter space on a knife block.

This set could be even better though. Personally, instead of a paring knife AND a utility knife this set should have included either the paring OR the utility knife plus a small serrated knife, like the Wusthof sausage knife which I also have and use frequently to cut not just salami but mostly bagels or bread.

Another reviewer criticized that this block is small. It is small, you need to want a small one to like it. But for a small one it is great ! Ideal for minimalists, small kitchens are beginners.

If you are just starting your household you will most likely buy additional knives throughout your life. However, I don't think you can go wrong with this set. Depending on the price you pay for the set it will be cheaper to buy this instead of individual knives and then replace the block with a bigger one whenever you feel the need to do so. That day may never happen or by that time you will have a better feeling for what you need at that time.
