I bought this product so that I could grind small amounts of flour from less common whole grains for breadmaking and emergency preparedness purposes.

The grinder is very simple to put together and fairly easy to use. Be aware that you may have to tighten the clamp occasionally as you use the grinder, but it is not difficult to do. I wouldn't attempt to grind large amounts of flour at a time unless you want your arms to hurt, but it is perfect for grinding a few cups at a time for a recipeand kids love to help out!

Also, while the coarseness of the flour can be varied, but it will not produce a superfine (cake) flour.

Pros:

Solid build 3/16" aluminum, single piece body nothing to break.

One moving part (grinding head), seems pretty strong

Easy to clean, seems rust-proof

Does not damage counter-tops (it's clamp-mount), due to a rubber pad and good pressure distribution.

Grinds predictably, not super-dust-like fine, but fine enough.

Can grind many things (nuts, seeds, etc) as longs as they are fairly small (see Cons)

looks nice

Thin enough to be stored in a kitchen drawer, fully assembled

Cons:

Manual (Requires effort) but that's understood.

Very slow with flax seeds (must be set to very coarse back nut off a lot), but does the job.

Large grains or nuts (eg almonds) need to be chopped first they simply don't fit through the teeth.

Not easily suited for use with a handheld drill (Yes I thought about making it electric for bigger jobs). Can probably be done but you'll need to clamp the square head (see photos) so a big chuck is needed you can't just use a socket wrench as you need to apply a pulling force to it... Can't fault it for this, it was hardly a design goal.

In short, it's worth it if you need 2 cups or less, infrequently. With hard grains I was able to do about 1 cup per 2 minutes of cranking, with millet and similar grains it is faster.

Finally, there is a certain pleasure in connecting with your food in a way an electric motor probably won't.

I don't know about the other reviewers. I can get a cup of flour in a much shorter time that 10-15 minutes. ?? That being said it is a MANUAL grinder. I use my electric when I want a lot of flour. I basically got this one to crack grain for cereal, but then we found out my daughter has non-celiac gluten intolerance. This is great because I was able to take this apart and wash with soap and water and dry really well, so we are able to grind rice and other grains without it becoming contaminated with the wheat. I use my electric grinder to grind up my wheat and now this one for other flours. It is manual, so it is hard work if you are grinding up large amounts of anything. For that I recommend an electric model. But for small amounts or for a preparedness tool, this is a great grinder.

One last note: Although my flour from my electric grinder is a finer flour than I can get out of this grinder, this grinder still grinds flour fine enough for bread.

Honest reviews on Victorio VKP1012 Hand Operated Grain Mill

I bought this grain mill in order to try fresh-milled grains, hoping to determine if I wanted to spend the money on a higher-priced impact mill. I figured at the very lest I would have an occasional-use appliance. To that end, my goal is accomplished. I have decided that there is no comparison between store-bought flour and fresh-milled. My baked goods are better than ever, with more flavor and (I assume) more nutrition. I will be purchasing a Nutrimill in the near future, and I now have a stand-by in case of an electrical outage.

That being said, the Victorio mill is just OK in it's operation. It does what it says it will do. On the finest setting it mills fine-enough flour for my quick breads. It IS hard work, but I expected that anyway. I did not, however, expect to have to use a large spoon to continually push the wheat berries down into the grinding mechanism. I think the opening to the mechanism is too small. It is a REAL HASSLE whem dealing with dried corn. It does grind it well, but it's difficult getting the corn down into the grinding mechanism.

If you are looking to purchase a mill to "try out" fresh-milled grains, this will suit you just fine. I could possibly recommend it as a back-up in case of power outage, although there are much better models available; but as a primary means of obtaining fresh-milled grains, even with only occasional use, I cannot recommend it.

As usual, I always read review before I purchase an item. I had decided that I didn't want to pay $3.99 for Ezekiel Bread anymore and wanted to make my own.

Plan A: I bought all the ingredients needed (several varieties of whole beans)put them in my food processor to make it quickly turn into flour (the instructions said it would only take 10 seconds). Twenty-five minutes of pulsing and not seeing any powdery flour only whole beans, I knew I had to do something else. So I tried to sprout the beans. After 3 days of rinsing beans, I created a loaf of Ezekial Bread that could easily hold a small yacht in place.

Plan B: Time to look for a flour/grain mill. I didn't want to spend a fortune so I looked at all the flour mills for under $100. I saw the Victorio Hand Crank Grain Mill, read the reviews, some favorable, some not and decided to give it a try. I LOVE IT! Yes, it's manual and it took me about 20 minutes to crank out 5 Cups of beautiful fine flour but I also got my exercise in so it was worth it.

Do I recommend this product? Absolutely! By the way, I did bake my bread and it smells heavenly! Also, it's small and stores so easily (the box is about as wide as one of my cookbooks).

Buy it, you won't be sorry.

This is a awsome knife. Super sharp. Great weight and easy to use on Veggis, Seafood, Sushi, Beef etc. Cut Salami or Carrots paper thin. The slices will fall right of the side, no more sticking to the blade! Great for chopping as well. I have almost all the 4 Star Henckels and I love them all and this one stands out. I can highly recommend this great tool. The same Santoku knife also comes in 7 inch lenght (for only ten dollars more) in case you are interested.

I have a set of Henckels chef's knives that I just adore. I recently added this 5-inch hollow edge santoku to my set. It has everything I have come to expect from Henckels: world-class quality, balance, comfort and control.

I am an advocate of EXCELLENT kitchen knives because they are so much more safe to use than crappy knives. When you use one of these, you are in control, even when cutting something hard and round like a winter squash or a huge, firm onion.

After Hurricane Katrina, when my stuff was in storage on the other side of the country, I went out and bought some inexpensive (OK, CHEAP) kitchen tools to get me by until I could get my things out of storage. I had TWO different knives break apart in my hands while I was using them! You know the kind: cheap plastic handle, poorly joined to the blade, not terribly sharp. Yikes.

What a relief it is to have a good knife in my hand again. I can focus on cooking, rather than on avoiding maiming myself with a cheap blade.

Every household needs at least three good kitchen knives--a paring knife (for trimming mushrooms and slicing small veggies, like carrots), a smaller chef's knife (for chopping onions and small cabbages) and a large chef's knife (for slicing bigger, harder things like watermelons and butternut squash.)

This 5" santoku nicely bridges the gap between the small and large chef's knives--perfect for people on a more limited budget. I used mine tonight to thinly slice a large onion. It slid through the onion like a warm knife through soft butter and the slices fell away from the knife cleanly as advertised. Using a good tool made well is one of life's enduring little pleasures.

I've used metal bowls to cover burgers and grilled sandwiches to help the cheese melt and used tongs, pot holders, dish towels, wash cloths, whatever I could grab, and usually ended juggling hot bowls to keep from getting burned so when I saw this "cheese melting dome" that had a handle on top, I bought it. Nice price helped of course. I have used this dome on my barbeque, on my indoor electric grill and on my stove top griddle. It works well on all of them. It is so much easier to just use a pot holder or dish towel to lift the dome by the handle than using the old mixing bowl to cover your burger or sandwich. I love my indoor grill because the weather where I live is "damp" and I love chicken wings. I discovered that this dome is very helpful in speeding up the cooking time on the wing sections, once I've grilled all sides and the wings are nicely grill marked, I cover them with this dome and turn the heat down a notch and the wings cook much faster without burning. If you cook for a lot of people you might want to buy more than one. 2 burger patties fit under this dome if they are close together, a large size sandwich fits, and 12 chicken wing sections will fit if you snuggle them close together after grilling. Hope this helps you decide.

I have three ranges that have bridge-type burners for using full-sized griddles. While cooking some foods such as breakfast sausage, the sides would not brown. I use this dome as a lid to fully cook such foods. It is the correct diameter for griddles and covers a good amount of items. I really do use it everyday and it solved a problem for me!!

I've been using whatever pot and pan lid I found first in the cupboard to perform this function, but now I feel like a real cook that I have an official gadget made specifically for this purpose. LOL! It's size will cover 2 grilled cheese sandwiches on regular bread or 2 standard size burgers and do the job it was made to do. Helpful HInt: Professional flat top cooks often have a squirt bottle of water nearby and they squirt some water under the cover for an instant burst of steam that will expedite your cheese melting process. Happy melting!

Honest reviews on Nordic Ware 365 Indoor/Outdoor Cheese Melting Dome

I found this for my Dad. He was wanting a dome cover to make blanketed eggs. He said that it worked perfectly. With the eggs in silicone egg rings he placed an ice cube under the dome and it created the steam to make the blanket over the egg yolks. He's very happy.

Of all the "cheese-melting" type lids on the market, I thought this was the MOST attractive. All-aluminum, yes, including the handle (which will get hot). Sturdy construction and a good weight. 9 7/8" wide on the outside and 9 5/8" on the inside, about 2 1/2" dome height. Does what it's meant for as well as an extra lid for woks and other pans. I like this lid a lot, plus it is Made in America. Hoo rah.

Use and Care: Hand-wash. Use pot holder or oven mitt when handling.

I bought one of these on a lark a while back (at BB&B I think). Turned out to be an excellent purchase! Mine's the smaller size, however, 11" x 3.25", which I think is better. It's ergonomic with a comfortable handle, good angle between handle & blade, not heavy. The blade is thin and flexible yet not weak or floppy. The corners are rounded just right to fit into pan corners. Unlike some utensils on the market, the handle is NOT too thick/bulky (so it doesn't hog all the space in the utensil jar or dishwasher rack). I've also found it's PERFECT for cutting/serving cake & brownies from a nonstick cakepan.

This is the ideal turner for a non-stick pan. It is thin enough to slide easily under eggs or cookies, yet stiff enough not to bend under the weight of a thick burger. The handle is comfortable and it cleans easily. I'm tossing the old traditionally shaped nylon pancake turners!

Best Deals for OXO Good Grips Large Nylon Flexible Turner

Just what I needed for my new non-stick griddle. Just the right size for omelets, supersized pancakes and supersized hamburgers.

Honest reviews on OXO Good Grips Large Nylon Flexible Turner

This turner worked great for non-stick pans. Most of these are real thick plastic, and you can't get them under the food like a metal turner. Then the food just gets pushed around the pan. The edge of this turner is so thin, it gets under food much better than any other non-stick turner. This model seems to be a lot stiffer than their other narrower models. The extra width seems to make it stiffer. It still bends some if the food is fairly heavy, however. But for flipping burgers, and even a little bigger things, it works just fine. One thing however, the black surface looks non-stick, but some things still stick to it a little, especially at the front edge when it pushes or drags under stuff, but it still cleans off easily.

These are essentially the bowls from the professional quality Riedel Vinum glasses produced without stems. By doing without stems you get a glass that neatly fits in the dishwasher, and save about $10 per glass compared to the stemmed Riedel. I have been using these for several months and they are fabulous. Since they are non-lead crystal, they develop the bouquet due to microscopic "pores" that non-crystal glassware lacks. They really gleam, right out of the dishwasher. Best of all, the rims are thin and smooth, which is the luxury feel that premium glassware is all about.

If you are wondering which to buy as an "all purpose" red glass, I prefer the syrah/shiraz glass over the cabernet/merlot, even though I drink mostly cabernet. The syrah glass is just a bit taller and more graceful. But the difference is minor.

I have been a wine "nut" for over 20 years, and these glasses are teriffic. Buy them, and feel safe using them daily. They will improve the enjoyment of every wine you drink, from Gallo to Lafite

Click Here For Most Helpful Customer Reviews >>

I really enjoy these glasses, and not just because of their interesting and classy appearance! They are quite thin (esp the rims) and feel delicate, yet at the same time feel surprisingly well balanced in the hand. In my opinion, they have proved themselves to be very durable, especially for such a thin glass (see my dishwasher testimony to follow!). The shape enables the consumer to really enjoy the nose of the wine.

I bought a large quantity of the cab/merlot glasses for a party we were having with a large amount of wine. They were an absolute hit all the way from the casual wine drinkers to several true wine conoisseurs present. Everyone loved the stemless presentation (and they were so popular that they drank both whites and reds out of them). Little did they know I had only paid $8 a glass! Someone commented that they had just read a NYT article on these, so they will probably be a hot item this '04 holiday season.

Even better... I was hesitant to put them through the dishwasher due to the rim thinness which I interpreted as a higher risk to break. However, given the number of glasses we had to wash, we went ahead and put them through the dishwasher after the party (some even on the bottom rack without my knowledge!). I figured with the number we had to wash we may lose a few but same some time.. Much to my surprise, not a single one of them broke they came out beautifully. The dishwasher is an old one too, so I also expected them to be at a higher risk for breakage due to the rougher nature of older dishwashers!

I do not think that hand warming is really going to be a problem with the stems in absentia most of the time you just pick the glass up for a moment to appreciate a sip. Also, the bowls are so large that you can easily (and comfortably) hold them more towards the top of the glass where the wine isn't sitting I have done this myself when I have walked around the house or the party with my glass. (In general you are only going to have wine in the bottom of the bowl anyway!)

In addition, for those who prefer to avoid leaded crystal due to concerns of lead leeching into the wine, these glasses are an excellent option as they are made of glass instead of leaded crystal!

Best Deals for Riedel O Cabernet/Merlot Wine Tumblers

My husband and I love these glasses... so much easier than worrying about breaking a stem, but still Riedel's signature shape that makes drinking wine fun. We get tons of compliments on them.

Honest reviews on Riedel O Cabernet/Merlot Wine Tumblers

We first saw and used these glasses at an up-scale wine tasting shop in Las Vegas and knew we had to buy some. The glass allows the wine to breathe and the bouquet to reach the nose. The best part is that there are no stems to break or spilled wine from being knocked over! (A tipped glass will actually balance itself without spilling any wine.) It's the Riedel Vinum glass without the stem and it is fun to see guests' reaction to the stemless Riedel. Try it; you'll like it!

These babies make the perfect gift. Like Weebles they don't fall downand they survive very well in the dish washer even thou they are delicate. Wine for me is an obsession so I'm always looking for something to enhance the experience. I've already given out 8 sets as gifts and what I do is bundle them with a Dean and DeLuca corkscrew and a copy of the new book Oldman's Guide to Wine. I paid about this price for a dozen of very similar little stainless steel sauce cups (a little more than 3 bucks for a dozen) from TheWebstaurantStore. I've been using them for over a year now, to measure out small amounts of spices and herbs so I can line up everything I need for a recipe.

These days, with my memory going, it's the best way to stop myself adding spices twice. Or three times. Or more. Plus, it's just a lot handier. Now I can cook a lot faster just measure everything out before, line them up in the order I'll need them, then I can just glance at the recipe clipped over the counter, grab the next cup, and just whip through the cooking process.

I have some small glass bowls in two sizes for larger amounts as well that I got from a dollar store the smallest ones come 4 to a pack (for a dollar) and the next size up comes 3 to a pack.

Having these ingredient bowls in the various sizes really helped me to be able to continue cooking, in less time, with less energy, and with a LOT less confusion.

These little cups come in a 1.5 oz size, which is what I have, suitable for a couple T of spices or what have you, and a larger 2.5 oz size.

They've really been very very handy in the kitchen!

I recently had a massive clumsy moment and dropped a three piece cookware set, shattering into many large chunks as well as hundreds of slivers of glass. Concrete garage slabs are not very conducive to absorbing harsh impacts. I began searching for a replacement set and came across some articles that led me to further research. The bottom line the Simax is manufactured in Europe using borosilicate glass (a much stronger glass than soda-lime glass). The Simax cookware is a bit more expensive than what is otherwise available but much more durable, stronger and safer. You can research borosilicate versus soda-lime glass and make your own decision. I'm certainly comfortable with the one I made. (I'll be using this same review for the Simax 1.5 quart glassware)

I purchased this pressure cooker mainly because I didn't want the aluminum that transfers from the cheaper aluminum pressure cookers. I have one, and even when washing it the water turns grey from the aluminum washing off. I am extremely happy with this stainless steel cooker I don't have to worry about metal transferring to my food. I am completely confident that it is safe the lid locks on very nicely. I like the thickness of the bottom food, including meats, don't burn to the bottom like they did with my aluminum one. This one cooks differently and takes a few times to get used to it. My aluminum cooker has the rocker pressure cap that rocks back and forth as steam escapes. This cooker is not supposed to have steam escaping while it is at pressure. Initially, steam will escape through the hole where the little red round pressure button is located on the top of the lid. Once it reaches pressure, the little red round pressure button will pop up and seal off most steam escaping. For a few minutes, steam and condensation will drip from various places under the lid or around the handle, but it will all seal shortly. At that point, turn the cooker down to medium. After about 10 minutes at pressure, steam will start to escape through the pressure release valve, which indicates you should turn it down to medium-low. I am very pleased with the quality of the product and highly recommend it. It is designed and made in Spain it really gave me a taste of perspective when the nicely color-printed instruction booklet was in Spanish, and the English instructions were a cheap b&w photocopy translation haha!

Best Deals for Magefesa Practika Plus Stainless Steel 8 qt. Pressure Cooker

After deciding AGAINST getting a rice cooker (they break, they burn on the bottom, etc). I looked into getting a pressure cooker. I went with the 7.5 liter (8 quart) model and I had read a lot about Fago but decided to try the other company, I liked the look of the handles a bit better on the Magefesa. I was really waaaay too timid and shy using the pressure cooker at first -I didn't get the heat up enough. My rice came out so-so, and then I tried some lentil soup which didn't cook all the way. I finally got the hang of it, I have a normal gas stove.... the red button up top doesn't mean you are at pressure, but just starting to build real pressure, so you really don't' know you have to listen and feel your way to it. After trial and error, I figured out 7.5 minutes on high flame on my gas stove (for white rice, rinsed once) 1.5 c rice / 2 c water and then I shut off the stove and let the rice cook itself under no heat for another 10-11. Came out perfect. Its crazy good when you add bouillon cubes (I use the Better Than Bouillon paste which rocks!!). It makes rice taste amazingly good. Rice made in a rice cooker, after it sits it gets 'hard' but this rice is perfect and when you bite into it, its just melts in your mouth. There's something that the pressure cooker does to food. Takes it somewhere you've never been before. Case in point is my old fashioned oatmeal. I took my vanilla soy milk 2cups, to 1 cup of old fashioned oats (not the steel cut, just the old fashioned) and about a cup of mixed frozen berries (blackberries, raspberries, blueberries) (+ tiny dash of cinnamon) and OH MY GOD Its amazing. The flavors of the berries + the vanilla from the soy milk, literally infused inside the oats, it tastes like i'm eating berry cobbler pie. 5 minutes on high, then let set off burner for 3. It does not burn. But man the flavors jump out at you in this thing. The bouillon in rice is great, try adding 2 Tbs tamari or soy sauce and you can make your own chinese fried rice with the right veggies. The Magefesa is sturdy i'm glad I got the 8 quart (7.5 liter), but I could see someone getting the 6 quart and being happy with that. It feels very quality built. Oh, the booklet that comes with it is in spanish, but I went on their website and downloaded the english one in PDF. Also I know a bit of spanish so I knew that on my red button A = abre means open. I think that hardest part will be learning to interpret when the unit is up to pressure. Like I said before I was a bit afraid to turn the flame up high enough and didn't get it up to high it was a bit of a failure at first. I think there is a learning curve to pressure cookers, so try to learn as much as you can. I think this is much better than a rice cooker. But the fact that I cooked oats and soy milk and it didn't burn is pretty amazing. Update: I made cranberry sauce from real whole cranberries for Easter came out amazing. I was using oil in my rice as I have seen on youtube videos and I was rinsing my rice. I stopped rinsing my rice and I use no butter/oil (preserve the vitamins) and it does take a bit more water 1.5 c rice to 2.25c water. I cook it for 8 minutes and let it set for 11 minutes now for unwashed. you will have to experiment to see what is best for you. Make sure you cook things up to pressure. I was afraid to put it on high and despite what the manual says I let it get up to high pressure and steam does come out the top.

Well, after waiting 22 days from the time I ordered this rack, it finally arrived. Very disappointed! The rack has sharp edges where the joints are soldered. One of the three small legs is shorter than the other two so it sits at a slant. You do get what you pay for. I don't think this is worth more than 25 cents. My previous review was not published for whatever reason, so I'll say it again. If you order something thats being shipped directly from China, prepare for a wait.

I bought this as a steam rack for my pressure cooker. It works as expected. It holds everything i put on it. No bending, breaking or rust or other issues after a couple months of use.

Honest reviews on Amico Household Stainless Steel Cooking Ware Steaming Rack Stand

I chose this one over 3 or 4 other similar products I found in Amazon. I wasn't sure if this was really made of stainless because I have seen some unhappy reviews said the (other)products they received wasn't made of stainless and started to rust right away.

Well, this one really IS made of stainless as far as I can see.

My first impression was how flimsy it looked out of the box. Then again, I compared to the sample photo and the real thing and sure enough, they look exactly the same. I just thought it would look thicker in my imagination. It supports quite a bit of weight despite its flimsy looking. I'm guessing probably up to 5 lbs. which is more than most things I put on.

Put that aside, it works as advertized. It lifts the plate, so you can put more water in the pressure cooker for the longer cooking time(for more tender meat or frozen meat, for example).

I also use this in combination of the bottom plate that came with the pressure cooker. They don't fit perfectly but with a little adjustment, they work together just fine.

*update*(8-13-13)

Out of curiosity, I tried 10 lbs weight on it(room temp.). It flexed a little but held up. I placed the weight on it gently and carefully, so it wasn't a real life use situation, and also the heat may weaken the metal. I wouldn't recommend to put the food that heavy but it just shows the safe limit of the rack. I still believe you can put 5 lbs of food in real life use with confident.

This syrup jar works well for 2-4 people depending on how heavy on the syrup you are. Size-wise, they are about twice as big as the single-serving stainless steal ones served at restaurants. I bought 2 of them since we do brunch at our place fairly often. We don't have a microwave, so I like to warm the syrup on the stove-top first then pour it into these serving jars.

This is the perfect little pitcher for 2 people. Perhaps more if you are light on the syrup. We are heavy syrup users. This little pitcher just makes you feel like you are putting something special on the table. Easy clean up. Nice color.

I bought the set but really for the honey pot. When it got here I fell in love with all three pieces. The colors are great and they are perfect sizes for my use as they don't take up alot of space in either the fridge or on the counter. I highly recommend.

Great little jar for serving and storing olives. I bought it because I've just started pickling my own, and it's just a fun little addition to the table. Great quality, beautiful bright green colour.

Exactly as it appears online, this little jug is very cute and does exactly what it needs to. Perfect for two people or a greedy breakfast for one.

Love that Amazon will send this to Australia, as the range of Le Creuset products available here (from a single importer) is very, very sparse and really expensive. Items like this don't find their way to store shelves here at all.

Also have to give credit to Amazon for a quick turnaround replacement. The original order was delivered with a smashed spout and handle and even with international shipping, Amazon made the replacement easy and hassle free.

Review of CHEFS Stainless-Steel Triple Breading Trays

CHEFS Stainless-Steel Triple Breading Trays

In writing this review, I humbly acknowledge that I made an impulse buy and I did not think things through. Let's do that together now. If you are doing a classic breading, you have your flour, your bread crumbs or panko, and your egg wash. Problem #1 is that you can't whisk an egg and some olive oil in one of these trays without it getting everywhere. Therefore, the reality is that you will continue to use the shallow bowl that you have always used for this step. So we really only need two trays but then we get to problem #2. Your other two ingredients are very, very light and essentially have no weight so you want pans that do not slide around on your counter-top as you dredge. But these do. All over the place. To make these things useable, they require some form of rubberized feet they just aren't heavy enough on their own. Lastly, the pans don't really link. Save your money.

I have had this set for years, and they are great. I do agree that they don't really link together well, but I guess that doesn't bother me. Well made and worth the money. They also clean up well in the dish washer.

Honest reviews on CHEFS Stainless-Steel Triple Breading Trays

Ladies and gentlemen, this is the only breading set you will need. The metal is substantial and keeps eggs, crumbs and flour from getting everywhere. I do wash (my husband does) by hand. But I think they'd hold up well in dishwasher. Worth every penny and don't bother with cheaper versions. These trays are a solid investment for your kitchen!

I replaced some plastic trays that weren't dishwasher safe with these sturdy and easy to clean trays made from stainless.
