Until hard-anodized aluminum came along, professional chefs scoffed at the very notion of nonstick cookware. Once they gave it a try, whole new culinary worlds opened up. How else can you whip up a scrambled eggs with cheese concoction and not leave half of it stuck to the pan? Meanwhile, the rest of us looked on wistfully and sighed at the high price, not to mention the fact that you can't just throw it in the dishwasher or look to the future and use it on an induction cooktop.

Infinite Circulon changed all that, especially with this 10-inch and 12-inch pair of open skillets. They're everything you expect from Circulon 2, like a nonstick surface that's really nonstick plus the ability to cook on ANY kind of stove, including induction. The hollow stainless steel handles really do stay cool on the stove while upping the in-the-oven temperature to a whopping 500 degrees F. When you're done, they can go right into the dishwasher and come out looking new, not pitted and corroded.

For a Lenten Friday dinner, we made whole wheat Fettuccine Marinara finished Bolognese-style, cooking and stirring the firm pasta in a couple cups of sauce until tender in the 12-inch skillet. Marinara sauce is hardly a challenge and it washed right out. On to a tougher challenge!

I made a couple fried egg and cold cut sandwiches the following Saturday, first frying the meat in the ungreased 12-incher, followed by the eggs without adding any grease or oil. Perfection! The eggs picked up a little of the browned bits left from frying the meat and that added some flavor. A quick hand-wash cleaned up with minimal effort.

Lately, the 10 inch skillet and my portable induction cooktop have become weekly visitors to the breakroom at work. Wednesday is hot breakfast day and I can turn out one omelet after another without having to scrape a mess out of the pan after each one. When we're in the mood for pancakes, I pack my Infinite Circulon round griddle.

As another reviewer points out, the manufacturer warns against using cooking spray, but it's OK to add a touch of oil for flavor. I oven fried a few strips of bacon and while the bacon drained on a layer of paper towels I poured off all of the grease, leaving behind a thin coating. I dumped in a double batch of Jiffy corn muffin mix and put it back into the oven for about 25 minutes. The result: a skillet Johnnycake that slipped right out and onto the cutting board. There's definitely an ooey-gooey pineapple upside-down cake in this skillet's future. It's already become my first choice when I need an easy-to-clean baking dish or small roasting pan for, say, a quartet of quarter-pound meatballs.

With its low price and cook-anywhere versatility, Infinite Circulon really is investment-quality cookware. When this pair of skillets is on sale, it's all that and a steal.

We decided on the Cirulon Infinite cookware after looking at a lot of other brands. The quality and versatility makes this affordable (a relative term, I know) line of cookware a great value. After 6 months of heavy use, we are more than pleased with the durability and performance.

* Very Thick Bottoms Allows for even heating of cooking surface

* Great Nonstick Surface Really nonstick, no issues at all DO NOT use nonstick sprays or "heavy oils" as these will ruin the nonstick properties (read the instructions)!

* Requires Less Oils We were able to cut way back on the amount of cooking oils we use

* Durable

* Oven Safe

* Dishwasher Safe

*Important* Follow the manufactures instructions and you will have great results.

Highly Recommended!

I wanted to love these pans. I read all the reviews before buying them and thought they'd be really great pans. I've had them for two years now. I've been very careful with them, never washing them in the dishwasher, never cleaning them while hot, never using metal utensils, using the tiniest amount of oil, if any at all. These pans kept their "non-stickiness" for less than a year.

I'm disappointed. My daughter bought a pair shortly after I did, and she's disappointed too. We've had non-stick pans before that were much better for the same price. So, beware, these won't be non-stick for long, and you will be left with two nice, heavy pans that stuff sticks to.

Also, the design of the larger pan is not the best. The handle is too long and thin, and the pan is so heavy it's nearly impossible to pick up to pour anything out of it. There needs to be another handle on the other side. To be fair, other reviewers mentioned this; I just thought I was stronger than average. (I'm apparently not--the pan is too heavy for me).

So, buyer beware. You might be disappointed if non-stick is really important to you.

Honest reviews on Circulon Infinite Hard Anodized Nonstick 10-Inch and 12-Inch

They are very high quality and a great value for the price. I've had them about a week and have used them a few times, I've very happy with them, they fry well, clean up great and are very pretty. I took the advice of another buyer and put a paper towel between them when storing since they have a bottom that might scratch the other one. I'm sorry folks, but I do cook with oils sometimes, that hasn't seemed to harm them, although I haven't had them too long. So we'll see. The sides are very high and the bottoms aren't large, so it would limit some things I'd like to cook, however, the high sides might be good for other things. I noticed after cooking in them yesterday with a temperature a little over medium that the bottom picked up the image of the gas burner... it did come off, but if not cleaned each time, it might discolor the bottoms a lot. The handles stay cool! and I was concerned with that but no problem. They are a little heavy and takes a couple of hands to lift the big one...so if you have any wrist problems, arthritis or are getting older, these might not be the ones for you. All in all, I'm very happy with them so far.

I did so much research over the last few months and decided to try these pans. I've owned quite a few pans over the years that included some that I was totally disappointed with but continued to use. Now, I finally found Circulon and these with be pots/pans I will use forever.

Even heating, stay cool handles, great weight but not too heavy at all, easy cleaning and doesn't look or feel cheap. I hand wash, but if someone puts in the dishwasher, I won't panic. Now, I will purchase other pieces and look forward to cooking once again.

I felt I should write a warning to those of you who have previously purchased Chantal blue items to match your kitchenaid appliances or other deep blue kitchen items and dishware, and are trying to add to your collection. The picture is deceptive, Chantal has changed the blue and it is now more of a "faded, stone-washed jeans" color (called indigo blue). Apparently they no longer make the beautiful deep blue that they previously sold called Cobalt blue. This item will not be the color in this picture, as apparently they did not feel the necessity to let anyone know they had changed the color, or to even take new pictures. Find a store that carries the new stuff and check the new color before you purchase it. I was very disappointed as it did not match my previously purchased pieces. This rating is for this and other new Chantal blue items only, and has no reflection on Amazon. Amazon does advertise some pieces in the Cobalt Blue, I assume (hope!) they are older stock, so grab what you need while you can!

I've had the red version of this pie plate for several years and absolutely love not only the look of it, but how well it goes from oven to table to fridge. I also love the very wide rim around the edge, which allows for a little more artistry with the crust and is beautiful, to boot! Every party I go to I always have the nicest looking pies, even if I go plain on the crust, simply because the dish itself is such an eye catcher. I would definitely recommend this to a friend.

Lovely blue color, and really a beautiful dish. It's hard to find 9 inch dishes these days. Most are 9.5 or 10 inches and deep dish. Well, all of my recipes call for a 9 inch dish. So this is a good find.

Honest reviews on Chantal Classic Pie Dishes

Good product; lovely deep blue glaze makes any pie look artistic and inviting. Great price through Amazon; twice the price in department stores.

These pie plates are lovely I have them in several different colors. They do a great job baking a beautiful crust, BUT, they are large. VERY large. I find that none of my standard 'fits a 8or 9double crust pie' pie crust recipes fit well. I end up using well over half my dough for the bottom crust and then just 'topping' the top of the pie with shapes cut out with cookie cutters. Pretty, but it would be nice to be able to make a full two crust pie easily (yes, I know I could tinker with my favorite recipes, but that is a pain).

These pots and pans are excellent quality and weight. They are better than the photo. They are beautiful. Please note, however, that it is not mentioned, but these are are "waterless" cookware and compare to the famous "Salad Master" cooking sets that are sold in home demos for $3000. These are very healthy to cook in...great recipes and info online but be sure this is what you're looking for. I don't know why they don't mention it in the title and descriptions. For this price it is an unbelievable value and much better than a lot of "name brand" stainless sets that are floating aroung at twice the money and up with fewer pieces!

I have been using it for a week, so far so good, no complaints. The steel heats really fast so food will be done faster than you think... careful with the pasta if you like it al dente. It also retains heat after the burner is off for a good while. I love it so far.

Buy Catamount Glassware Classic Design Microwave Popcorn Popper, 2.5

Catamount Glassware CG4526 Classic Design Microwave Corn Popper, 2.5-Quart, Red
Customer Ratings: 3.5 stars
Buy Now
My Mom got one for me, and I was skeptical of a metal basket in a microwave, especially since my research online kept turning up pictures of several kinds of plastic lids. But I see here that the mesh one doesn't cause sparks, but just melts butter efficiently.

As for people's problems , I recommend readers just chalk them up to people who don't understand microwaves or anything that is not totally automatic. Microwaves have different output in watts. 900W will take longer than 1100W.

My popcorn button is geared to commercial microwave popcorn packets with the foil against the kernels, and lasts 2.5 minutes. Using the Catamount the first time, I found the popping started later than with packets, and that I had to add one more minute to complete the popping. The corn (inexpensive store brand) was fluffier than any of the expensive microwave packets I've used, including Orville, Pops-Rite, the guy with the cowboy hat, and Kroger.

The bottom line: for one minute longer cooking time, the Catamount makes better popcorn, saves 80% of the cost, and allows me to control the quality of oils I use. No trans-fats from hydrogenated oil, artificial flavors, or chemicals. I can add oil with pepper, herbs, or spices in extra virgin olive oil right there with the kernels, and add organic butter to boot.

This is a great way to beat the ripoff microwave popcorn racket and return popcorn to the realm of inexpensive treats. Controlling the quality of embellishments is a bonus.

My first Catamount popper broke when I cleaned it by hand (and I thought gently) and held it by the handle. Then I bought a second one, ran it through the dishwasher, and as I was putting it away, noticed that I seemed to be spreading red on everything I touched. Turns out that the paint on the popper was smearing off on my hands. If this weren't such a good popper and I were not so fond of popcorn, this popper would be on its way back to the manufacturer. I'm willing to give it a second chance, even if I have to wipe the paint off with a rag, but if a newer, better popper comes along, I'm dumping this Catamount without pity.

Best Deals for Catamount Glassware Classic Design Microwave Popcorn Popper, 2.5

For the life of me, I don't understand the negative reviews, because this is the best, the easiest, and most efficient popper I've ever owned. I have to admit that my first attempts failed but I soon realized it was the fault of the "premium" and costly popcorn I was trying. Put that in the trash and started using Orville or even store brand and I have popcorn perfection. Microwaves vary as we all know, so I guess that would be the reason for the learning curve, but here's what works for me--

I add either 1/4 or 1/3 cup of popcorn to the popper and then I add salt. Into the mesh top, I put a bit of butter to suit my taste, about 1-2 T, but it isn't necessary. I set my microwave for 4 to 4-1/2 minutes and then watch it carefully. It takes a good 2 minutes or more before anything happens, and then it pops quickly. Normally It is finished before the time is up. Occasionally I will have up to 5 to 10 unpopped kernels, but that is rare--it is usually under 5. For fun changes, you can add different seasonings instead of or in addition to the salt, such as sweetener for a kettle corn

I wash it by hand because it is just easy to do, so I haven't tried the dishwasher, but the red on mine looks the same as it did when I bought it a tear and many popping ago

Before you give up on this popper, please try different corn. I'm ordering another one just so I won't be without in case something happens to this one.

Honest reviews on Catamount Glassware Classic Design Microwave Popcorn Popper, 2.5

I saw one of these in a catalog last year and wondered if it would be worth trying. I received one for my birthday and it works great. There is no need for oil or even butter to pop the corn, and it does replace bagged microwave popcorn and is obviously more healthful. We can eat popcorn every day now if we want to.

I'd like to add that over the past year I have been buying organic microwave popcorn. With the switch to this glass popper, I realized that the bagged organic corn even had a strange taste from the oils required to pop. I suppose I had gotten used to it over time, it still tasted better than the usual brands of not-so-healthy bagged popcorn.

This popper is a breeze to clean. The only thing I was concerned about was the internal height of my microwave, but this fits on top of the built-in glass turntable with plenty of room above. The butter melting capability works just fine, but popped plain the steam alone can be a good substitute for butter.

I would recommend this to any popcorn lover, it pops nicer corn than a hot air popper, and is convenient to use and clean.

We got one 6 months ago and have used it at least once per day. We wore off the pretty red label months ago, probably because we put it in the dishwasher every day. You don't even need to wash this thing after every use, just wipe it out with a paper towel and your ready to go again. I saw that another reviewer has had popcorn stick to the inside. I've never had that happen. However, we don't make popcorn without oil. We like to use olive oil (canola oil works too). We use 2 tbsp of oil and 1/3 cup of popcorn then put 1 tbsp of butter in the dripper on top and 4 1/2 minutes in the microwave (your mileage may vary). I do have to use a spoon occasionally to get the popcorn to come out of the opening at the top. But, that is a good thing because the popcorn has filled the popper so full that it gets jammed tight. It is a glass jar so it will break. But, no orange dye or space-age polymers to get stuck in your food (unless you're into that, of course). AND, our kids can make popcorn without using the stove and potentially burning down the house. The handle has an important function, it doesn't get hot. The jar, however, does get hot. If you make another batch without letting the jar cool down you will have to adjust your timing on the microwave... but that makes sense, right?

We have a bed and breakfast, so good quality cooking tools is very important to us. We bought this pan last year, only one because that is all they had at the time. We liked it so much for making our omelets that we decided to replace our other pans with two more if this one. Sadly, when we received these, and have since used them, we were very disappointed with their change in quality. The metal is thinner and the handle is different. The nonstick surface is different as well. They are a much lower grade of product then before.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I received this set just in time to use it for Thanksgiving, and I'm glad I ordered it. It's a fantastic set.

The pots themselves are very well made. They are solid and just feel like quality. The non-stick surface is great...more on this in a minute. On heat the pans get hot very fast, although being aluminum-based they won't hold heat as well as, say, cast iron.

You get two skillets, two saucepans, a dutch oven, and a griddle. All but the small skillet have lids. Also included is a non-stick cookie sheet and a spatula. The lids are made of glass, ostensibly so you can look at your covered food as it is cooking. In practice the lids tend to fog over with condensed moisture, so their utility here is limited.

The non-stick surface is not a typical teflon coating. It is textured to further minimize the potential for sticking. This is good and bad. For instance, doing up eggs of any kind on the skillet is a dream. No sticking, eggs cook quickly, etc. However, I wouldn't recommend this pan for things like steak, since you must get the pan rocket-hot in order to get a good sear and crust on the meat. Non-stick surfaces won't hold up to that kind of heat, so you won't get the kind of crust you want. However, for less-aggressive cooking methods, even hamburgets, these pans work fine.

Also, be sure to take care of the non-stick surface as it can scratch easily. Avoid using metal utensils. I use softish plastic utensils when I cook with non-stick. In this set a spatula is helpfully included which gives you an idea of the kind of plastic you're looking for. And even though non-stick coatings can tend to wear away after use, the coating on these pans seems very well made and will last for quite some time.

A very good set from a very good brand. I recommend them highly.

UPDATE 29 Aug 2013

We've been using this set regularly for the past nine months and it's still performing perfectly. The non-stick coating is still there on all the pans, has not even started flaking or peeling, and doesn't even have any scratches thanks to being careful not to use metal utensils.

In practice we very rarely use the lids, but to be fair we don't usually use lids anyway, except for oven cooking (and we don't use these pans in the oven) so it isn't because of any kind of design flaw.

Very happy with this set and I think we'll get plenty of use out of them.

I bought these as a gift for my husband, and I am so glad I did! We wanted something nonstick, and these pans have hit that mark beyond my expectations! Even when making pancakes on the griddle pan, we've never needed to use cooking spray or butter, and the pancakes slide right off the pan! The baking sheet is just as awesome, no cooking spray and the cookies do not stick at all! The best part is, these pans just rinse clean with no scrubbing! I'll be ordering a Farberware muffin pan next!

Best Deals for Farberware High Performance Nonstick 12-Piece Cookware Set

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program This is an awesome basic cooking set. The pieces are lightweight, non-stick, and easy to wash (should you decide to use a little elbow grease instead of taking it the easy way out i.e. your dishwasher). It has all the essential pots and pans and even includes a griddle that I'm excited to use for future breakfasts.

The only downfall, I would say, is that the pieces are relatively small in size/volume. Good perhaps for making a dinner for two but no more. Good for sauce making, ramen, frying up some eggs, cooking small things, etc. Bad for dinner parties. Perfect for your kid going off to college. (Assuming that s/he cooks and won't just eat out of the dining hall all day, everyday.) Bad for Thanksgiving (except for cranberry saucethe 1 qrt saucepan would be just right).

A few days after this set came, a friend visited. So I took that opportunity to test out a few of the pots and pans. The 3 qrt saucepan, dutch oven, and 10 in skillet all heated up nice and quick. They were easy to hold and lightweight (which felt better to my wrists when compared to iron skillets which weigh a ton). The nonvented glass lids fit well. The spatula worked just fine, though I usually prefer less flexible ones.

Honest reviews on Farberware High Performance Nonstick 12-Piece Cookware Set

I wish I had read a little more about this set before I got it for my Wife for Christmas. The skillets are just too damn small to use for anything other than a small portion of anything. Going to have to get at least one larger skillet for her.

Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Farberware High Performance Nonstick 12-Piece Cookware Set

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I really like this 12-Piece Cookware Set. My food cooks evenly and I love the fact that it's non-stick but the design makes it so that the food doesn't slide around. I really like the square griddle. It's perfect for making grilled cheese sandwiches.

Cleaning is very easy and the fact that it's dishwasher safe makes it very helpful. They fit in my dishwasher just fine too.

Although these pots and pans aren't too lightweight they're not ridiculously heavy either like some others out there. In my opinion they are the perfect weight and size. I have the black set and it looks great. I would highly recommend this set. It has just the right amount of pots and pans and would make a great gift for someone.

Honest reviews on Lodge L12SC3 Self-Basting Iron Cover, 13.25-inch

I love this lid, but I think it's funny that it costs more than the pan.

However, with this lid, you definitely bring the pan to life. The 13.25 inch skillet is endowed with Dutch oven capabilities now. It now does roasts, sautés mushrooms, and generally gives you a stovetop baking option. In general, I highly recommended this lid as well as its matching skillet. The only drawbacks are that it is incredibly heavy and takes up enormous amounts of space in the kitchen.

It works great and meats are very moist. When one buys this you have to think long term. Cast iron can easily be handed down to the next generation if taken care of, making this well worth the purchase price! Besides it sucks trying to use tinfoil on a pan this size when you don't have the lid.

Good Cook Potato Masher

I was not as impressed with this product as I had hoped. The holes are very small and they get packed easily. I had to frequently stop and use a fork to get the potatoes out, or just rinse it under hot water. It was somewhat of a mess. I ended up getting out the hand mixer (which is why I bought this to keep from having to use my hand mixer) to finish the job.

I have since used it when making beans, to crush a few and thicken the mixture. For that, it's great. If you're looking for something to give you a rough or 'smashed' consistency, this is for you. If you're trying to create true 'mashed' potatoes, this will fall short of your expectations.

When I got this I didn't know it would be so versatile. I can use this on all my nonstick pans in mid of cooking to mash tomatoes/fried onions/beans to make smooth gravy/paste. The spoons/spoonulas never worked like this. This is my favorite companion and I use them all the time to mash almost anything in cooking. The product quality is great. Highly recommend it!

Best Deals for Good Cook Potato Masher

I can see why some people complained because the holes are rather small so they can get clogged up when mashing potatoes. However, I'm mashing them so it makes no difference if one gets clogged or not I'm still mashing! :) The plastic is great because I was able to use the same pot to boil my potatoes and then happily mash away. I can't see anyone being overwhelmingly disappointed by the purchase.

I use this to make refried beans, and it makes it SO much easier. It's really well constructed and saves me a ton of time cooking.

Sturdy construction, great value for the price, but the material the masher is made out of is not non-stick, so washing it is not very easy. I guess they intended that for a better grip when mashing, but still not worthy of 5 stars.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I was pleasantly surprised by this set. While it's not super heavy stainless, it's definitely not flimsy either. The walls of the pans are substantial and every pan in the set has a weighted bottom. Pyrex has incorporated some innovative features in this set that make it stand out. Overall, I think it's a great set, especially for the price. The combination of pans in this set make it a perfect starter or replacement set.

Positives

* The handles are silicone covered making them easier to grip and less likely to burn the cook. Even the 6 qt pan has silicone grips on the bottom side of the handles.

* The unique feature that allows the lids to be perched on the pans prevents the frustrating drip of water all over the stove and reduces the risk of burns from steam.

* All of the pans have pour spouts, making it easier to drain or pour the contents.

* Even with the pour spouts, the lids can adequately seal the pans when positioned correctly.

* The pans and lids are a good weight, not flimsy and thin.

* All pans have a weighted bottom layer allowing them to heat evenly and prevent hot spots and warping.

* The lid handles make it easy to grip and are not likely to burn cooks or slip from hands.

* The silicone handle covers provide a non-slip spoon rest for frequently stirred dishes.

* Measurements inside every pan.

* Clear size information and care instructions on the bottom of each pan.

* Sizes and measurements are both standard and metric.

Negatives

* Only oven safe to 350 degrees, but the pans in this set are not really the type of pans that most people would use in a hotter oven anyway.

* The great handles on the lids also mean they can't be easily stacked for storage as some lids can. The set might take up more cabinet space than some because of them.

* The skillets are non-stick. Although they work beautifully now, it's been my experience that no non-stick pans remain so for more than two or three years.

Followup after more use

The innovative feature that allows you to hang the lid on the pans is actually more trouble than the dripping condensation issue of normal lids.

If your pot contains much food, the lid will touch or dip into the food when hung on the pot wall and create more of a mess than condensation would have.

The lids handles are easy grip and not likely to slip out of your hands, but for all practical purposes, the hanging feature will rarely be used.

We bought the nonstick 10-piece set about a week ago (from a brick & mortar retailer), and thought they were wonderful, especially the measurement markings and the fact that they can go in the dishwasher as well as the oven. However, we recently noticed that around the area where the lid touches the pots, bits of the non-stick coating had been scratched off. Examining the lid revealed a seam in the metal that scrapes off the nonstick coating when you spin the lid while the lid is on the pot or pan. I called Pyrex and they said that there is nothing to be concerned about, as the area where the nonstick coating had been scratched off will not affect cooking performance. I then brought up the fact that bits of coating will end up in our food, and their reply was that the coating is non-toxic. Since I do not want to take that chance, I will be returning the set.

Best Deals for Pyrex 10-Piece Cookware Set

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program This is a nice stainless steel set which more that the usual finishing touches. Sure they feel good, cook evenly, and have a comfortable handle... but so do a lot of other pots and pans. What sets these apart are all the thoughtful touches that Pyrex adds.

My favorite is the measurement markings, no more filling up a big stock pot 2 cups at a time with a measuring cup... all the units are printed/etched (probably laser etched, I didn't notice any texture and it doesn't quite look like ink) right on the inside. Also pretty nice is the small lip on each pot and pan, which aids in pouring and when used with the lid, you can stain off any liquid. The other feature that's cool, but I don't think I'll get as much use out of since I have the counter space is that each lid can be held up by the pot itself (see the stock pot in the picture), but it could be a huge deal for the small kitchen.

PROS:

+ Marked measuring units in all the pots (Hmmm... My measuring bowls are made by Pyrex too)

+ Self straining lid design

+ Self holding lid feature

+ Quality heft

+ Super effective non-stick coating

+ Dishwasher safe

+ Oven safe

+ Comfortable/Cool handles

+ Stylish design

CONS:

If the lid isn't centered it may let out a little more steam than desired through the pour lips (Not much though)

The pots when tapped sound a little thin, but obviously are not (I'm sure this is just me)

On the shallower pots with the lid in the self holding position it could touch/go into the food (Not a serious problem)

Oven temperature limited to 350 degrees (Probably because of the handles, anything over that and your probably in an oven made dish anyways)

The cons don't really justify any dings to my 5 star rating, since they are just reasonable compromises to allow for the improvements. If you're looking for Stainless Steel or would just like your cookware to be a little bit more convenient, then you should really consider this set.

Honest reviews on Pyrex 10-Piece Cookware Set

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program This basic ten piece cooking set has lots of nifty design extras. The inside of the pots are marked with measurement lines, which could save you from having to wash measuring cups. The pots also have a pouring lip, making transferring liquids easier. The handles for the pots and pans have a nice comfortable, stylish grip. Most noticeable are the fancy lids. The lids can be hooked onto the pot while you're cooking, so you don't have to find a place to put the lids when you need to take them off.

Though the set has lots of extras, it's not my favorite choice for cooking. First, I don't really like cooking on non-stick pans, but that's just a personal preference. If you like non-stick then these non-stick will satisfy you. Second, for the price, I think pots could have been a bit more substantial. Don't get me wrong; they aren't flimsy, but I like pots a little thicker. Third, some of the improvements seem a little gimmicky to me. For example, I don't really think the redesign of the lids is as helpful as Pyrex wishes it was. Bigger, oddly shaped lids are harder to fit into your dishwasher. Also, if your pot is quite full, the lid will be partially submerged in the food, which is messy (my pots are frequently quite full).

This is a great, high quality product, but ultimately how well you like it will depend on your own personal cooking style. Look at the extras and improvements and think carefully about whether those things will really make life in YOUR kitchen easier.

You betcha it can! I HATED the thought of spending hundreds and hundreds of dollars on cookware especially when I am not a huge cook. In fact, my current cookware is from ... err ... 1979 (and boy does it show it).

A few months back I finally had to break down and buy a large part to make spaghetti. Paid close to $40 for that pot alone! Wish I had known about this set first because this is a far better deal for the same quality if not better.

I haven't used it much again because I'm not a big cook. But the pieces I have used are great. Love the fact that there are clear lids. (Old pots/pans had solid lids and I hated them.)

I'm a huge bargain shopper and I think this is one of the best deals around. Plus, it's making me want to cook more. (Better check my smoke alarms!)

I have done about a dozen meals in this wok now. It cleans very easily, and has cooked some wonderful meals. I have read the manual, which is fine. I use an electric stove, and have found that I need to use a higher temperature than the manufacturer recommends in order to get the wok to perform as desired. I use a medium-high heat.

In general, the wok heats nicely and keeps food warm if you have to wait. The non-stick surface works very well. The food does not stay on the sides and has the tendency to slide down, but the cleaning of the wok afterwards is a snap. I don't believe you will find a nicer wok in this price range. To get a nicer wok you will have to go to china town, etc...

I have big hands and I find the handles a tiny bit small. I am 6'5" tall. The lid keeps the steam in, but be careful when tilting the lid as it will let all the water drop at once. The glass at the top of the lid is nice in theory, but it fogs with water droplets, so you really can't view once the lid is on. I use a hot pad when removing the lid because the metal part of the handle does get hot.

This wok is so far the best one that I have ever had. It is truly non-stick easy to clean & the glass-domed lid is a really nice touch, which gives the wok a very classy look.

I am addicted to cooking most of my meals in this wok from salmon fillets to one-pot family meals.

I highly recommend this wok with no doubt!

I've had this wok for 2 years now and I use it about once a month. I've used it on gas and electric (glass top) stoves and it works well on both. The wok is still in great condition and is easy to clean. I could not ask for a better, more low maintenance wok!

I'm very satisfied. I like the material and the size is just right for stir fry. The weight is not too heavy and easy to clean. The best part is that it's not coating. I don't need to worry about the material peeled off and mixed into the food.

I highly recommend this wok to everyone! This is one of the most valuable items in my kitchen. My family uses this wok frequently and for a variety of dishes. This wok is the perfect size where it fits well on the stove with other pots and pans cooking at the same time. It is also wide and deep enough to make large amounts. I have used this wok to make large batches of Pad Thai and sauteed veggies with pasta and sauce. These dishes require the multi-tasking abilities of this amazing wok. The non-stick surface is one of the best I've ever experienced! The wok heats very evenly and easily washes clean when you're done. In the winter we make several different delicious Indian dishes and sauces using this wok. All of our friends who have had dinner at our home have commented on how versatile and amazing this wok is. Several of them have even purchased it for themselves. This wok is a great value for all the money you will save making restaurant quality meals at home!!

I am very pleased with this purchase. First of all, the non stick surface is safe, healthy, and works excellently! When I cooked my first batch of rice with this cooker I was surprised that the manual calls for a 1 to 1 ratio of water to rice. With my previous experience I thought that this was absurd and that the rice would not be cooked thouroughly. I followed the instructions and the rice was cooked to perfection! I have not used the cooker for anything else besides rice, but so far I am very pleased! It is not only much safer to the health (i.e. no aluminum in contact with the food) but the clean up is much much easier!!!

I am Indian and I cook not only rice, but also dal (lentils) along with some spices etc. in this rice cooker. I have used many rice cookers before and I will say this has done a pretty good job at cooking anything I threw at it. I cooked white rice (Indian Sona Masoori), Basmati rice, Brown rice, Brown Basmati rice, Jasmine rice, Cal rose rice, wild rice, masoor dal (Red lentils), toor dal (Yellow lentils), chana dal (Split chick pea lentils), etc. This has done a great job at perfectly cooking everything. You have to alter the water quantity depending on what you cook. The regular 1:2 rice to water ratio doesn't apply for everything. I know it because I grew up cooking different kinds of rice and lentils. But anyone can understand the correct ratio with a little trial and error. 1:2 ratio is a good place to start.

Having said that, I will give this only 3 stars because of the following reasons:

1. The non-stick coating inside the steamer bowl is not of the highest quality. I used an Aster before this one and it lasted me at least 3 years before the non-stick coating started chip off. This one started to chip off in just 18 months and I use only the plastic spatula provided with this cooker. Now I am looking for a replacement steamer and it is very difficult to find.

2. It is advertised as 10 cup (Uncooked) but in my experience it starts to spill over all the water when it's cooking anything above 5 cups (uncooked)

Cleaning is easy and zero maintenance. I don't use a dish washer so I cannot speak of whether it is dish washer safe or not. Also, it is rather slow to cook compared to others I have used in the past.

I had used a Panasonic rice cooker that is similar to this one. It worked great for nearly 10 years and finally the non-sticky layer was worn out, so I bought this SR-G18FG 10 Cup Rice Cooker/Steamer. It works great so far just as I'd expect. I would definitely recommend this one to others.

but kinda dissappointed with this product. the glass cover stays

UPDATE: 1/15/12: Please note that my original review was written in 2007, so serial numbers mentioned are different now, so unsure what has changed at KA. Hope all is good by now!

NEWLY EDITED 11/30/07:

IF YOU ARE ABOUT TO BUY a PRO 600 & you have done your research, you already know there is a plastic/metal parts issue, so PLEASE read my info: KA customer service KNOWS which Pro 600s have the metal transmission cover "fix" (via serial numbers), but some reps are refusing to give you the serial numbers to look for; but they might "allow" you to call them from the store with the serial number off a Pro 600 box before you buy to ensure it has the metal transmission cover. So, be insistent! Here's my story:

The first rep I called was a supervisor "Kelly", who refused to tell me which serial numbers to look for! Nice! I spent too much time researching ,so I called back & the next rep (Rachel) gave me her extension & told me to call her from the store & she would tell me if the one I found was made after the "fix". By the time I found one I wanted at the second store visited KA cust serv was closed. I bought it anyway, crossed my fingers, & called the next day. "Rachel" wasn't available, but another rep told me the serial number was one of the newer mixers I wanted. (pls read all the "negative" reviews here for good info)

IMPORTANT: This rep also gave me crucial I want to pass on as it's the info I tried to get before I bought my mixer the serial numbers of the Pro 600 6 qt, 575 watt mixers with the metal cover "fix" (made from mid-April 2007)begin with numbers higher than "14" (my serial number is WU1503109, so it's above "14") Depending on the rep you get, only a couple are willing to confirm this info, so be prepared for frustration but just hang up and keep trying until you get a good rep.

ALSO IMPT: There are a few 6 quart KA mixers made I am only speaking of the store bought PRO 600 6 QT, 575 watt mixer found in stores like Bed N Bath/Linens N Things. So, read all these reviews carefully & note the dates they were written I think there is a possibility of people writing both pro & con reviews about 6 qt mixers that might be different. However, the plastic issue is the same, just the power would be different. For example, QVC sells a 6 qt KA mixer with a smaller motor, and there's a Williams Sonoma 6 qt mixer as well.

I wanted this powerful mixer as I have a 30 yr old KA mixer with a 250 watt motor, but it has a small bowl. My old mixer has never had a problem with a thick batter cookie I make every year at this time. I was anxious for the large bowl & to see how my new "workhorse" with its 575 watts would handle this batter because many have complained that it burns out on thick doughs/batters. UPDATE: I just made my thick cookie batter with my new 575 mixer & it did a super job!( My recipe uses 1 1/2 lbs of brown sugar, 8+ cups of flour, one pound of butter and 2 cups of Karo syrup no other liquids or eggs so it's a tough batter for any machine) Once I began to add the flour (using the nice pouring shield) I never went above speed 2 (as suggested by KA for heavy batters/doughs) & speed 2 was all that was needed. A nice rep also suggested to rest the mixer if I needed to mix beyond 7 mins, but I never came close to that.

SIDE NOTE: when I opened the box last nite, the electric cord was folded in half & tied into a knot; there was a very sharp/jagged piece of metal on the lifting guide; a blob of dried paint on the top of the bowl holder; & bits of white crystals in the bowl that tasted like salt. Of course I called KA & Robert, with permission from his supervisor, offered a replacement immediately which I didn't ask for & certainly wasn't expecting! He said the "presentation upon opening the box" wasn't professional & they wanted to correct that. He also told me to go ahead & use this unit until the replacement arrives! WOW! Once it arrives, KA will send UPS to pick up the one I bought. Another WOW! I then told Robert about my Serial Number fiasco & he said that he would have provided the S/N info before I shopped! He also said that he stood by his fellow reps, but he agreed that someone like me, who had done hours of research, should have been given the requested info from the first call & certainly not have been forced to call from a store! In my case, I wanted a mixer made after the mid-April date which is the date KA began putting metal transmission covers on instead of plastic.

My WARNING: There is old stock, with the plastic cover, out there, yet KA still insists there is nothing wrong with this, so I'm giving you a big head's up..

Until I made my batter, I rated this mixer a 2 for the lousy customer service/runaround I got from 2 of 5 reps. Now that I've made my batter, I am vamping it up to 5 stars BUT KA needs to get more reps like Robert and the other guy who helped me. (If not for them, KA would NOT have this sale) So, while I wasn't treated right at the beginning, I am happy now & have edited my review accordingly. KA has quality issues re cust serv, especially supervisor "Kelly". (Try to avoid her as she thinks she works for the CIA.) I hope I have saved at least ONE person from all the frustration I suffered through to get what I wanted. In the long run, I think you'll be happy & customer service is great IF you get a good rep!

I already own a 5 Qt mixer from the "Artisan Series" but decided to upgrade to this model so that I could make larger batches of bread dough. For my recipe, a single batch is 2 cups of bread flour. I tried making a double batch (4 cups) in my new Pro 600, but after about 15 min. of kneading, the motor just turned off. I thought I had burned it out, but after consulting the instruction manual, it seems this is normal. Normal?! Yes, that's what it said--all I needed to do was wait for the motor to cool off (it's also "normal" for it to get so hot it is uncomfortable to touch) for 30 min. and then try again. I find it hard to believe that this mixer could make bread with 14 cups of AP flour, as the box says. Having said that, here are my thoughts on this mixer vs. the "Artisan Series" mixer I already own:

1. The motor consumes over 50% more electricity (and is certainly more noisy) in the pro 600, but how much of that is being converted to extra torque, I'm not really sure. What I do know is that I can only do a single batch of bread at a time in either mixer.

2. As has been mentioned in other reviews, the Artisan mixer came with a "coated" paddle and dough hook, whereas the pro 600 has "Brandished steel". This means the Artisan's implements are dishwasher safe but the pro 600's are not. I had assumed those bright, shiny implements that I saw in the store display were stainless steel, but I guess not. If it weren't for this problem and the huge price tag, I would have given this mixer 5 stars.

On the plus side...

3. I love the new spiral dough hook--it is much better than the C shaped one in my Artisan

4. The soft start feature is a nice touch. Then again, it would be even nicer if there was a speed lower than the lowest one provided.

5. The larger bowl is nice

6. There is more of a difference between speeds 7-10 than the Artisan

Things I'd like to see changed in the next iteration:

--A gear box. I have a cordless drill that has a high and low gear. As could be expected, low is for more power, high is for more speed. Why don't these mixers use a simple gear selector like that? This would be a HUGE improvement--it would not only provide more power, but the lower speed I would like, as mentioned in point 4.

--Stainless steel implements as mentioned in point #2

CONCLUSION:

A very nice mixer, but so is my "Artisan". If you are going to buy a new mixer (and don't have an unlimited supply of money to throw at it), I wouldn't recommend the Pro 600--get one from the Artisan series instead--it is much cheaper and does just about as good a job. There are small advantages to the Pro 600, but even all together, I don't think they are worth the added price.

Due to the very high number of complaints about the problems people were having with heavy duty tasks (which is what the mixer should have been made for!) due to cheap plastic housing holding the heavy duty metal gears, I contact KitchenAid to find out if this design flaw has been fixed. It has been and here is their response (note that they are saying that if you receive one of the models with the plastic housing they will replace it under warranty with the new metal housing. It is also important to note that the people who've had the problem have almost all stated that KitchenAid had great customer service and replaced their mixers with no ones with no problems.

RESPONSE FROM KITCHENAID: Thank you for visiting the KitchenAid website!

I would like to reassure you that our engineering and product teams have addressed the gear box issue. In fact, we have already implemented a change in the manufacturing of the Pro 600 Stand Mixers to a metal gear box. Although these will be changed out on additional 5 qt bowl-lift models that include all metal gearing, the time line on that is not known at this time. Although a transparent change, this will insure the long-term durability we expect.

I would like to emphasize to you that should you purchase a Stand Mixer (with all metal gearing) which has not been assembled with the upgraded metal gear box, and you should have a problem with your mixer (as a result of the plastic gear box (failure), we will most certainly extend your warranty to resolve the issue properly and effectively.

Honest reviews on KitchenAid Professional 600 Series 6-Quart Stand Mixer

I was a bit nervous about this Kitchen Aid model based on the research I'd done on Amazon and the internet of previous models in the 6 quart range. I own and cherish a K5SS I bought 25 years ago. I will never part with this machine (with all its chips and cosmetic wear it's been a faithful workhorse and one of my most prized possessions).

I was ready for greater capacity, more power and a more cosmetically appealing mixer, so I took the plunge with the KP26M1XC (licorice). I'm glad I did.

The machine is a bit louder with more of a high whine at higher speeds, but I would expect that with the added power and size.

This morning I took it for a "test drive" with a 600 gram (flour) batch of pizza dough using very high gluten flour which I kneaded at speed 2 for 5 minutes. The sound under load wasn't at all unpleasant and the spiral dough hook really works the dough like the professional mixers I used in culinary school and on the job.

I've mostly used my 5 quart Kitchen Aid for cakes, muffins, pate choux for eclairs, mashed potatoes and whipped cream and meringue. I've made my bread dough exclusively in my large capacity Cuisinart food processor. Now that I have a more powerful Kitchen Aid mixer, I feel confident it can take the challenge of the high gluten dough (Take heed: DO NOT USE MORE THAN 8 CUPS PER BATCH OF HIGH GLUTEN BREAD FLOUR, WHOLE WHEAT FLOUR OR ANY OTHER HEAVY GRAIN FLOUR. THE 12 CUP CAPACITY REFERS EXCLUSIVELY TO ALL PURPOSE FLOUR. ALSO, ONLY USE SPEED 2 when kneading dough. (Repeat this to yourself 20 times and post a notice above your machine, especially if you have a spouse, kids or roomate(s) in your household that might use the machine.)

Caught up in the excitement of this new, beautiful machine I was inspired to purchase the pasta roller accessory based on the terrific reviews on Amazon, I also added the sausage stuffer to my order (could this be used to fill eclairs? I wonder....) as an addition to my collection of accessories.

Currently the attachment I use most frequently is the shredder which I use exclusively for shredding cheese for pizza and casseroles like lasagna.

And, the Licorice is a matt, slightly pearlized finish, which nicely complements the black trim on my larger appliances. An unexpected bonus of this dark color is that it really shows the "dirt/flour/batter enabling me to get it "spanking" clean after use. With my middle-aged eyesight I find it hard to see the accumulating mess on my white machine.

Amazon.com is such a treasure. I have learn so much here.

Sunday I bought the Pro 600 mixer from a store then read a lot of questions and comments here and elsewhere on the web about problems with the plastic housing of the metal gearbox inside the machine. (I should have come to Amazon first! I will next time.) Under heavy use this plastic gear cover is prone to cracking and then the gears are no longer held together.

I also read where KitchenAid is in the process of changing back to a metal housing for the gears. So I wrote a question for the chat rooms on the KitchenAid site with my model and serial number because I would like to know if the new machine I bought has this plastic box around the gears or maybe I am lucky enough to have the new metal box.

The posting wasn't offensive or nasty. I have no reason to be. I'm not out any money. The machine is new packed in its original, unopened box.

The KitchenAid site refused my question. I received an email saying it was rejected because my question about my machine and the plastic housing is a "non-issue " because they stand behind their products.

(There is a one-year guarantee on the machine. That is good. But after the 1-year is past if this plastic gear cover cracks and fails this "non-issue" has just turned into a pricey little problem for the owner. All that is available to fix it in my area is another plastic housing, I checked.)

The note also said they are still in the process of changing the plastic gearboxes back to metal. I then called a KitchenAid repair place to ask them about the plastic gearbox cover and the man there knew all about it. He has replaced many of them but all he had in stock to use for repairs is the same plastic housing. He did not know of any replacement metal housings for repairs. He did tell me older models have the metal housing on the gears.

Those of you who would be heavy users of this machine take note. As for me I know how I can make it a true "non-issue." Back to the store we go and I will wait and check back with Amazon.com later in the year to see what others are saying. I still want a Pro 600 but I would feel much better with the metal housing on the gearbox. Sooner of later plastic is going to dry out and break.

This was not a throw away purchase to me. It was a life goal, a legacy purchase that you would hand down in the family. I am not wealthy enough to stand the damage of having to toss it out after a couple of years.

I hope the folks at Whirlpool/KitchenAid are listening. Fix this problem now. Stop phasing it in. Every day that you dawdle with this problem you are slowly killing your brand.
