Before purchasing this pot, or any other stockpot for that matter, you need to determine your primary purpose for the pot. Steaming or boiling. The basket sits two inches or so off the bottom of the pot which makes this pot excellent for steaming. If you are mostly going to boil then you should look for a pot where the basket sits closer to the bottom. That gives you more room to boil. This pot is very attractive and cleans up easily. The only drawback is that the handles are too close to the sides and top of the pot. It makes it difficult to carry for people with average to large hands.

I'd done a lot of research on steamers for blue crabs before making our purchase. One area of concern was the thickness of the metal; some people had posted that the stainless steel (on various brands) was too thin and the metal wore out or sprung a leak. I'm happy to see this isn't evident on the Bayou Classic series. Their steel gauge is within a mill or two of our regular Cuisinart sets. Everything looks good and we should have this ~9-gallon pot for many years of oventop use. Note that this steel is still "slightly" magnetic, though.
The problem it appears that some steamers have is with an outside fire source with a too-high heat concentration from a propane burner stand. (If you find yourself flipping your arc-welding goggles down to fine-tune the flame, you might want to re-evaluate your cooking technique a tad. :) Some kind of diffuser you put in the way so there isn't a heat jet concentrated on one small spot on the cooker bottom is what we're talking about. You'll still get all the BTUs, just done over a larger area.

Three of the six welds holding the handle to the lid popped loose the first time I heated this pot up. The gauge is not as thick as I was hoping for and the bottom stained terribly the first time I used this pot. My Martha Stewart stock pot from K-Mart was much better quality than this thing. I was just hoping to have a nice quality larger pot. I won't buy this brand again.

I ordered the 62qt pot based on the description, photo and manufacture information provided on their site. Contrary to what is shown, the handles on the pot are welded on and not riveted. The photo on the box that it came in even showed riveted handles. They must have recently changed production. The welds do not appear that strong so I can see in the very near future that they may break. When the pot/steamer initially came in, I called Amazon and they sent out a new one stating that the handles should be riveted. The second one arrived and it was also welded. For $159, they should be either welded better or riveted. The service rep from Amazon was great. She wanted to make things right. She offered to replace the 62qt with the 80qt at the lower price but that would not work for me since I needed a steamer with the basket sitting off the bottom. The 80 qt did not do this. She indicated that they were placing all the pots under review from Bayou to make sure items are described correctly. She initially offered to give me a discount on the pot but then recalled refunding the purchase price already. She then said to just keep the second 62 qt pot and ship back the first one giving me a free pot. Not a bad way to make up for a mistake. Although I would have rather had the proper pot w/ handles, I was impressed with the customer service from Amazon and will feel confident in anything I order.
