I bought this bowl as a gift; well actually I had purchased, returned, searched and cursed at the first bowl that was said to fit this mixer, resorting to finally seeking the advice of a Kitchenaid representative. This is a heavy steel bowl, like the one that comes with the heavier duty KitchenAid (I have a larger unit than the Artisan to handle rye bread dough, dense stuff that it is.)

The extra bowl is pretty handy for doing a lot of cake batters like Genoise. Genoise is leavened solely by beaten egg whites, so an extra bowl to do the whites is very useful. You can do part of a batter in one bowl, pull it off the KitchenAid and then put in a clean bowl for the egg whites, which you know must be beaten in a clean bowl with no fat lest you break the formation of the foamed whites.

It's also handy for multicolored batters (checker cake) and for doing two kinds of bread at once. I don't need it every day, but when I do need an extra bowl, it's great to have one handy.

I recently purchased a KitchenAid 6 quart Pro mixer and this bowl came as a standard attachment. Although stainless steel, the bowl has a very shiny, almost chromed finish--unlike the bowl with my previous, smaller model KA mixer. The VERY FIRST TIME I put this bowl in the dishwasher (it specifically says "dishwasher safe" in the instruction manual) I was astonished to pull it out the next day to discover RUST all around the outside edge of the rolled upper lip/rim! The shiny finish appeared to have eroded just sitting overnight in the dishwasher, leaving multiple, ugly little rusty spots.

Well! I called customer service at KitchenAid (my mixer being only three weeks old, it was under warranty) and they had no explanation for how "stainless steel" could rust overnight, but they sent me a replacement. The bowl arrived quickly, I used it once, and then--taking no chances--it was washed by hand, and then up-ended on a dry kitchen towel, on the table, to finish drying overnight.

This morning, I picked up brand new bowl #2, and found even MORE RUSTY SPOTS than on the previous bowl! Virtually 1/4 of the shiny plating on the lip of this bowl has corroded away, leaving rust stains on the towel I wiped it with, and ugly black spots (after I rubbed away the rust) on the lip of the bowl.

I will be contacting KA again, but clearly there's some manufacturing flaw occurring in the plant in India where these bowls are manufactured.

I have the KA 600Pro and I got this additional bowl about 6 months later. I have to say, I use it more than any of the other accessories I purchased for my mixer. It is exactly like the one that came with my mixer the quality is superb. Heavy stainless steel with a very comfortable handle. Especially for the holidays, the extra bowl makes using your mixer even more of a pleasure. I often make dough in one and simply let it rise right in the bowl. Then I pull out the other bowl to make a big batch of whipped potatoes, a dessert, or anything else I might want. It's definitely worth having.

When you use one bowl to mix a cake batter and you need to add whipped egg whites, what will you do? Transfer the batter, wash the bowl thoroughly to remove all traces of fat, and use it to whip egg whites. It would be a snap if you had a second bowl!
