This was an excellent purchase. We use the bowl for salads, soups, fruit punch, mixing of cake, cookie doughs and sauces with a hand mixer or whisk, heating in the microwave, storage in the fridge and many other purposes. The bottom of the bowl on the outside is flat, on the inside it is gently rounded.
The quality and utility of this bowl by far surpasses that of the currently offered bowls made by Pyrex, Anchor and no name manufacturers. This is not made from cheap soda lime glass in China, but from first rate borosilicate glass by Simax, a leading glass manufacturer in the Czech Republic with a long tradition in manufacturing laboratory glassware. Pyrex and the other US brands (Corningware, Anchor etc.) stopped making borosilicate glass prep-, cookand bakingware, replacing it with thick, heavy and low quality soda lime glassware products from China to increase profits. I had several of those chipping or spontaneously breaking explosively, probably due to tensions within the glass due to sloppy tempering.
Borosilicate glass is highly resistant to acids, bases and will not leach like soda lime. If you are concerned about chemicals leaching into your food (from plasticware, stainless steel etc.), this is probably the safest choice.
