I've owned a set of these for about five years now, and use them regularly. They work fine if you actually READ AND FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS. You have to pick the proper size unit for the amount of pasta you're going to cook. Don't pick the small one and then stuff it with raw pasta, there won't be enough space left for the amount of water (and the heat it is carrying) to cook anything.Add Pasta, snap on the strainer lid, fill the thing with true, boiling hot water. Then wrap the neoprene sleeve around the middle of the unit, screw on the solid cover lid, and set it sit undisturbed for about 10 minutes.
The length can vary with the actual temperature of the water you added, the thickness of the pasta, and how soft you want the cooked product to be. I've gotten away with near-boiling water out of a coffee machine's hot-water tap, but cooking will take a little longer.
Unscrew the solid cover, drain out the water through the strainer lid, then pop off the strainer and serve. Rinse with a bit of water to clean. I never had any trouble with pasta clumping together.
When the units are new, the plastic lids will be extremely tight, but they will loosen slight with time and wear. They need to be tight to accommodate the heat-induced expansion, as the two plastics are different so the expansion rates will be slightly different. The strainer lid will pop off a bit more easily when the whole unit is hot, but not so easily as to dump out your pasta into the sink by accident.
I used these units when I was driving semi-trucks, and they were the only way I found to easily cook pasta while on the road. I regularly cooked noodles, hot dogs, and most often, tortellini in them. (I recommend fresh packaged Bertolli, etc style, not the hard, dry style, as the dry ones just take too long to re-hydrate.)
Cooking with these takes a little bit longer than if I was dumping a box of noodles into a huge pot of water boiling on the stove, but I don't have to wait for all that extra water to boil, and the pasta never, ever boils over like it will on the stove.
This also makes cooking pasta a bit more flexible, as you can walk away from the unit and leave it a few extra minutes without ruining the meal.

I was on-line looking for a recipe to try fresh artichokes in my Pasta Express and came across the bad reviews here and was surprised. Mine has a neoprene sleeve on the outside wetsuit-type material w/ velcro closure; I wonder if that is the difference? I've had very good results and been pleased. I cook whole-grain pasta, which usually takes a bit longer, but it has always come out great -al dente & still very hot (in contrast to some of the other comments which said their pasta had cooled off). This is why I wondered if they used the neoprene cover. Anyway, I've had great results w/ linguine, angel hair, spaghetti & rotinni. I will continue to use it, as it is easy and saves clean-up time.Honest reviews on Tristar Pasta Express "As Seen on TV" - PEX
Pasta Express is a total waste of money. I bought two one for my daughter and one for myself. Neither one of us has had any luck with it. The pasta does not cook in the length of time it says, you can leave it longer, but by then the water has cooled off, so it is not cooking anyway. I have had two meals competely ruined trying to cook pasta with Pasta Express. It is nothing more a gimmick to make someone rich. I threw my in the trash just before going to the store to by more pasta to cook on the stove right in the middle of cooking a meal. Total Junk.Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Tristar Pasta Express "As Seen on TV" - PEX
In fact!, I am on this site looking to purchase yet another. My hubby and I have just finished a meal with artichoke hearts, mushrooms, chicken breasts and PASTA!Pasta that I purchased from Costcos and takes a good 14 minutes to a nice firm not mushy done!
I noticed that the cylinder had a crack, on the inside and after dinner I am on line trying to get another!
I love this for shrimp! Put a little beer in with the raw shrimp and heat your water very hot!....quick as a wink it is done! and beautiful too!!
I always seal the top units (2) and wrap the blue velcro tight around the cylinder!
I was amazed at all of the disappointment reviews that there are!!! Shocked actually! As I swear by this unit!
Couldn't be easier and a nice Al denta pasta, veggies like asparagus (fresh) are also tasty?
Go figure?
