I'd never tried making sushi at home before trying it with this kit. It is quite the process! I don't think there's really an easy or quick way to make something that calls for so much detail. But this kit was a serious lifesaver when it came to making my sushi. Props to anyone who's done it on their own with one of those bamboo mats. I was a little overwhelmed at first with all the different parts it comes with, but there are step by step instructions for each size of sushi that explain how and when to use each component of the set. It ended up being a lot simpler than I expected but still took some time. I had fun! Definitely recommend. My friends were impressed :)

As for the sushi ingredients one thing I did not know was that you need "Sushi Rice" and cannot use just any old white rice. I couldn't find it at my regular grocery store so I went to a specialty store featuring a lot of Asian and Hispanic foods/ingredients and they had everything I needed. I bought:

Sushi Rice (yes it's called that!)

Nori Wraps (the seaweed)

Veggie Filling (Fresh cucumbers, avocados, whatever you want!)

Your Choice of Fish

Spicy Mayonnaise (I mixed regular mayonnaise and Siratcha together so good!)

Cream Cheese (I used this on some of the rolls and it was really yummy)

Soy Sauce for dipping

Tried it several times to give it a good test. Yes, it does work to create a sushi roll but it is a rectangular roll and not the traditional round roll. I found it more cumbersome to use than the traditional mat method.

Makes sushi easy. I'm not so good at the bamboo mat technique so gave this a try and I can say it works great. Even had the grandkids in on the action. I would recommend. I did put cooking spray on it to help with the sticky rice but not sure that is actually needed.

Really nice little set. I used to making the traditionally rolled sushi with a mat so this kit was a novelty for me. Haven't tryed making the heart-shaped yet but I found this set easy to use and very easy to clean. The guides for cutting, especailly for those of us who are challenged by cutting evenly. I'm glad that it's available. Novices like me need all the help we can get!

I didn't like it. This was too big. It makes really big sushi pieces not like the restaurant at all.
