This is a wonderful electric kettle! I followed the instructions when I bought it and cleaned it as such and I do not have any issue with smell or taste in my water. I just now boiled water put it in a cup and I'm drinking it. It tastes like hot water. I do use FILTERED WATER because when you BOIL NASTY TAP WATER it tastes LIKE NASTY TAP WATER. I use my electric kettle for cooking but mostly for coffee and tea. I am very hard core with my coffee brewing specific beans in different methods and this kettle does not alter flavor in any way.

I would give this a five star review if it didn't boil a bit longer than it should. I do not notice a loss in water but I think it could shut off a few minutes early.

My previous kettle of 6 years, the Phillips Essence, finally keeled over so I picked up a Breville one simply based on the reputation of the brand. So far I like it.

The water is quick to boil and the construction of the kettle itself is pretty good also it doesn't look bad at all. I thought about getting the stainless steel one but its heavier and more expensive. The lid opens smoothly with a touch of the button on the handle so there's not any pulling involved which is great.

My only gripe is that it doesn't have a chime for when the water is done boiling. Not a huge deal but still a small inconvenience, usually Breville thinks about those small things and does something about it.

Now if this lasts me for like 5+ years I'll be truly a happy customer.

I give it a star for being good looking but, as mentioned by others 1) It takes forever to switch off when boiling, and 2) It makes the water taste bad, gives your tea or coffee a sort of dishwater flavor. Returned it and got the Zuccor / Milano instead, which works fine.

I bought this as a gift for my parents, it is slightly different from the one pictured. It says "BPA Free" on the plastic window of the kettle. It works great, the switch lights up when in use, and the water boils quickly, there is no chemical odor or taste from the water. They followed the directions, washed it and boiled a full pot, then threw out that water before they used it for drinking.

Basically the boiled kettle water smells like plastic it's as simple as that. I do not understand how a company can put a nice amount of effort into the design of the product (definitely one of the better looking electric kettles) but forego the practicality of clean tasting water. FAIL!
