Over the years, I've used and abused numerous tools for stirring pasta as it boils, and for dipping it out once it's done everything from a slotted plastic spoon, to bacon tongs, and a three-tined wooden fork. I even had this thing that looked like a flat wooden spoon with about a dozen 1-inch dowel pegs mounted on the spoon end. Nothing seemed to work all that well and the odd dowel-pin thingie was a serious pain to clean. I finally decided there was just no great way to do that particular job.

But while "retooling" following a major kitchen remodel, I tried just one more pasta implement, and imagine my shock to find that it works beautifully! Mine is technically an earlier model of this Calphalon item, but I recently bought this one for a gift, and it seems very similar, with a slightly larger ladle end, and what feels like a stronger handle, which also has a longer non-slip grip area, all design improvements, if anything.

The "teeth" on this server work nicely to separate strands of pasta in the cooking water, and it's wonderfully easy to get a serving of pasta out you just dip the ladle into the kettle and lift up ... a reasonable amount of pasta, which actually stays put while you move it to a dish. And mine comes clean every time in the top rack of the dishwasher. What more could I ask? Unless they have the patience to enjoy fiddling with shifting just a few slithery noodles at a time, I would encourage any pasta lover to try this tool.

As an afterthought, I think we need a catchy, more descriptive name for this utensil. "Spladle" or "spa-ladle" (a contracted form of "spaghetti ladle") is the best I've come up with. Any other suggestions?

We eat a lot of pasta and this tool is ideal for serving it. It grips the pasta well and can handle a heavy amount without bending. The entire tool is sturdy and seems very well made. It looks nice hanging by the stove. I recommend it.

I purchased this Calphalon pasta fork, along with six other Calphalon nylon utensils of the same type, 18 months ago. For the first year I was really pleased with them. However, in the last several months, the grey silicon insert on the top of the handles of two of these utensils (the pasta fork and soup ladle) have separated from the rest of the handle. The inserts could be snapped back into place the first few times this happened, but now they will not stay properly inserted, which results in both utensils having too much flexibility (not to mention they no longer look nice). I fear the same will happen with the rest of my Calphalon utensils. Although the silicon insert is a nice idea, it is poorly executed, and I am now looking to replace my pasta fork with a one piece version.
