I've yet to see a lodge skillet with a smooth bottom. Try cooking an egg on something as rough as a rasp. The seasoning of the skillet is good, but I had to sand the bottom smooth & then re-season. To re-season use a very light coat of vegetable oil or lard and bake upside down in oven several hours until the oil forms a hard dry coat. Should be repeated a few times for a really good seasoning. After that it's a really good skillet.

This is a fun skillet to use. It's definitely more work than getting a non-stick skillet. We enjoy the ritual of using it. Because of the thickness, the temperature is distributed evenly.

I love cooking with cast iron. The skillet does an excellent job, and I no longer use my non stick pan and rely on my skillet which I can use on my gas cooktop and in the oven. It just does a great job!

If you could only have one cooking pan/pot, this would be it. If you can have many, this should be amongst them. Remember, always warm it up before you use it, at least three or four minutes over a medium flame. Some people say you don't need to use oil with these, but then again, some people are liars. CLEANING: Don't be afraid to get it wet when cleaning. In fact, buy the strange chain mail scrubber that works remarkably well, and while the pan is still more than just warm, run it under water and scrub it with the strange chain mail. If you don't know a good blacksmith, and have no access to chain mail, pour a bit of oil in the pan while still hot, and cover the pan in a liberal amount of salt. Use this slop to scrub all around the inside of the pan, and then rinse the slop out. Don't worry, it's good for the pipes. UPKEEP: To make sure your cast iron keeps its usability, every so often, set your oven to the highest heat setting it has, rub your pan in vegetable oil inside and out, and place it in your oven for an hour. At the end of the hour, turn off the oven, and allow your pan to remain in the oven over night. It will come out looking and feeling like the day you bought it.
