I have been looking and looking for a rack alternative to the big handled ones at the hardware. This one supports the smaller jars well, and I would recommend it to anyone who does smaller jar canning. I am thrilled that I could find it on Amazon.

I'm new to canning. I loaded up two big pots side by side: the Progressive 20 qt. pot Progressive International Stainless Steel 20 Quart High Dome Stock Pot with the Progressive reversible rack at the bottom and a friend's that was slightly smaller with a little tray at the bottom to keep the jars from touching the bottom of the pot. Note that if you load the Progressive rack with 7 pint sized wide-mouthed jars, you need more than the 10.25" diameter of the rack itself. The lids will overhang slightly. My friend's pot just fit the rack, but was unable to hold all 7 pint sized wide-mouthed jars. It's a neat feature of the rack that it fits quart sized jars on one side and pint sized jars on the other.

Anyway, the end result: the jars in my friend's pot clustered to one side as they cooked and tended to bang against each other whereas the Progressive rack kept the jars slightly separated and perfectly situated throughout the boiling process. So I really like the rack, but the Progressive pot is unbelievably thin. The bottom flexes in and out and the way the handles are attached look like they're not meant to move the pot with anything in it. The pot has to go back even though the dimensions are perfect, just for safety's sake. Now I'm on a quest for a better quality stainless steel pot that will be wide enough (but not too wide) to fit the Progressive reversible rack loaded with jars, tall enough to cover the jars with an inch or two of water, and includes sturdy riveted or bolted handles. If anybody has found one, please let me know!

This item is perfect for it's intended use. I'm not a big canner and didn't want another big pot added to my collection. This was worth the $15 spent vs the $100 plus to buy a water bath canning set. Not perfect but nothing this inexpensive ever is.

I have only used this rack twice so far and it has remained rust free. The wire is pretty sturdy IMO compared to the wire rack that came with my canning pot. I would use this rack with a canning pot as another reviewer mentioned. I like that it holds my pint jars well(7 at a time). However, when you turn it over to do quarts, the rack is pretty high up off the bottom of the pot which means more water in the canning pot (almost to the top of the pot). Also the dividers on the quart side mean you can only do 5 quarts at a time. If the rack were just flat on that side, you would be able to can 7 quarts at time. A big flaw. I will continue to use the rack for my smaller jars, but for quarts I may look for a regular circular cake wire rack.

All the canning racks I've had over the years have rusted or broken becoming unusable. This rack, besides being stainless, is extremely well made and heavy duty. Not having side extensions is no problem, I lift my processed jars out individually so extensions are excess baggage. I expect this to be the last rack I will buy. Delivered on time and ready to use.
