We received our first set of Chicago Cutlery knifes (didn't include steak knifes) 30 years ago from my husband's aunt as a wedding gift. They had wooden handles. We still have them! They're still sharp and I still prefer the paring knife over every one I've tried. In fact I even bought a second paring knife just in case!

On a lark when I saw this set, 18 piece Insignia Steel Knife Set, on the Deal of the Day (almost two years ago) I bought it for my husband for a Christmas gift. He's gotten into cooking and I thought it would look nice setting out on the counter. I think it may have been his favorite gift and one we use constantly. The knifes stay very sharp still haven't needed sharpening two years later! We never put any of them in the dishwasher (per manufacturer instructions) and they have never needed polishing (other than hand drying) or any other care.

Everytime we use the steak knifes with guests they are amazed at the sharpness of the blade. They don't need to be serated. They sliced through everything.

My nephew is getting married in just a few weeks and I've decided to ignore his wedding registers and buy him a set like ours. I know he and his new wife will use them for years! Somehow seems fitting to pass on the tradition.

For years I've been using a cheap knife set. I got sick of taking forever to cut vegetables (and of always having my knife slip rather than cut), so I decided to get a more expensive set of knives. I've been skeptical for years of getting expensive knives because I'm not really a fan of washing dishes/utensils by hand.

Anyway, when they arrived my first test of them was to cut up an onion. The difference was night and day. Usually -I diced the onion in probably no more than 15-30 seconds, tops (after peeling it). The cuts were so smooth and proper that I didn't even cry while I was cutting it. And as for washing these knives -if you're prompt about cleaning the knife right after usage, it takes only a little bit longer to do it by hand than it would take to put a cheap knife in the dishwasher. And the built-in sharpener is convenient and easy to use.

I will start by saying that I purchased these for $99 not the $89 they are currently listed for. WHAAATTT??? Philyodaddy never gets conned like that!

Here is a ranked order of things I look for in a Knife Set:

1) Sharp as hell

2) Sharp as hell

3) Sharp as hell

4) looks pretty

That is the entire list. I am not nearly proficient enough in the kitchen to have other requirements. The knives are sharp as hell. They cut the crap out of stuff. I enjoy showing off their sharpness to amazed visitors (more realistically, I just show my girlfriend over and over again). Look how easy it is to cut through lemons! You try! Case closed. They are also a pretty good looking knife set. I'm not sure I needed 18 knives, because I only know what about 8 of them do, but it is impressive looking and really makes people know that I'm the boss.

I purchased them about 1 month ago, so I cannot objectively weigh in on the rust-issue (I have none at this point). Therefore my only real con at this point is that this point is that the block is really big and awkwardly fits in my small New York City kitchen. Please note the massive size before you follow me to sharpcity.

Update 11/15/13 I can now objectively weigh in on the rust-issue. Non-factor. That is all.

For the money, you are not buying a set of Wustof or Henkels. Let's be clear.

However, for the average and above average cook and kitchen chef, you don't need them.

I just got these a few days ago and have used and abused them already. I'm looking for things to cook and excuses to pull them out of the bock.

The first night with these knives it was steak night, wow....is what everyone said upon cutting into their steak.

From chopping potatoes, butchering a pork but to put on a smoker to the pairing knife, these are very sharp and nice knives.

My only drawback would be the weight. For a solid set of Stainless knives, you'd expect just a little more weight in the handle, they are very, very light.

But don't mistake light for quality, they are high quality and very sharp.

For the price you pay and the knives you get, this set or the one in black are the best bang for the buck in quality knives.

Very, very happy. IF the knives had just a hair more weight to them, they'd be 5 star.

Part 2, a few months later.

Still a great knife. A few tips for those looking at them for purchase.

DO NOT use the in block sharpener. It's junk. Buy a nice honing steel, and use it every 2-3 uses of the knives.

Research honing vs. sharpening. Constant sharpening should never be needed. But honing is needed a little more frequent.

I've never let these sit in the sink dirty more than a half hour. I hand wash every knife and dry them on the spot.

Never run good knives through the dishwasher.

These knives are light due to a hollow handle. They are, however...high quality.

You do have to monkey with a few of the knives to get them in the block, but that's only because the knife slots are very, very tight.

Don't regret my purchase in the least. Still very happy.

The knives are sharp, and I like the built in sharpener. However, out of the box there were gouges in the blades edge that I had to remove by sharpening the knives. This was on at least three of them. Also, I have been hand washing the knives, but one of them is starting to rust already, by the handle, (2 weeks old) and the scissors have discolored along with another knife. Aside from that they work well.
