My fiancee rescued this from being thrown away--she cleaned it and it was still covered in marks, stains, crusty stuff... then I went at it for a long time with elbow grease and an array of tools including steel wool and scraping it with a metal butter knife. Amazingly, I was able to remove just about all the marks! There were a few places on the outside where the enamel had chipped off (probably due to dropping on stove) and exposed metal underneath--but no rust is forming there to-date, so I give it an A++ on durability.

The whistler was no longer on ours--this seems to be a common problem. However, we were able to buy a replacement Bird Shaped Whistle that works great.

I did note that though the inside is coated in an enamel that also seems durable and good, there are two places where it is showing a tiny amount of rust. I am not sure if there was a knife dropped inside, or some other similar abuse, or if it simply is rusting on its own from age. However, it's very small and I expect to continue using this kettle for years before I worry about rust really getting in my water. There is also a little rusted spot on the inside near the holes going to the spout.

Besides being elegant and durable, I also appreciate that it heats quickly and lacks some flaws many kettles suffer from. The handle does not get hot and water pours smoothly out without "burping" (many kettles somehow cause the hot water to splash up right when you're pouring into a cup--resulting in boiling water two inches farther than you meant to pour!) or dripping back down the spout.

4 stars because of the whistler falling off and the rust spots forming inside.

Very classy, looks nice on the stovetop. Will probably last forever but I wish the water poured out of the spout a little better without dripping

Love my whistling teakettle, especially when I walk away or go into another room or become interrupted. I have ruined several pots from forgetting, so now I remember -the water is ready and so am I. I should of had one of these long ago. It classy as it sits waiting for tea time. Thank you for your prompt mailing and product is great quality.

Honest reviews on Le Creuset Enamel-on-Steel Whistling 1-4/5-Quart Teakettle, Dune

I wish I could recommend a better kettle... we thought we were getting the best, and I could have done better with going to Kohls or Target.

This kettle can be dangerous and it doesn't work right...

1. It can potentially SHOOT/SPRAY out boiling water from the spout while being poured. I MEAN it shoots out of the spout.

2. When it's boiling, steam comes up out of the top and the spout, which makes it difficult to pick up.

3. It drips while you are pouring, and it's SO annoying to clean up drip spots all over the glass top stove and counter when you just want a cup of tea.

4. When you take the top off after it's cooled, the condensation just drips everywhere. The cap is not concave and doesn't hold in the drips momentarily.

5. I love the color, but it gets dirty easily.

I am so disappointed.

This teakettle has a fundamentally flawed design. Le Creuset's traditional heavy enamel-on-steel construction is good for a pot that should heat up slowly, distribute heat evenly, and hold heat for a long time, like a dutch oven, but this is not what a teakettle needs to do.

The Le Creuset teakettle only works safely with exactly the right amount of water. If you put too little water in the teakettle, when the water is finally boiling (did I mention it's very slow?), the spout has become very hot, and the water tends to explode when it hits the spout, resulting in a spray of boiling water all over your counter. If you put too much water in the teakettle, when it boils it blasts out the spout and all over the stove (never leave this kettle unattended in the kitchen, as it may put out gas burners). You need to have the water high enough to partially fill the spout, but not so high that it will blow out the spout when boiling. But how can you know how much water is in the kettle? You can't see through it. It's so heavy it's hard to tell how much water is in it. You could lift the little lid and peer inside, but there are no markings. Boiling water explosions are a terrible way to start the day.

Seriously, don't buy this, it's a terrible kettle. You have to use it with a hot pad in one hand because the handle gets hot, and a dishtowel in the other hand to wipe up spills.
