This is a huge pot! Great for Maryland steamed crabs. Pot is almost too big for the stove but works great on a propane burner outside. Crabs do steam a little faster because of all the holes in the insert pot. Also, clean-up is a challenge because it's big for the kitchen sink, but finish/granite ware does clean-up well. Great value.

This is a pretty big pot! I'd say you could steam about 3 1/2 dozen or a little more medium sized Maryland crabs. We steamed 3 dozen (but the crabs were a little small) and there was room left for a few more. The insert pot has holes at the bottom and sides which helps them steam faster than when the hole are just at the bottom.

I love this pot, but beware, 33 quarts means HUGE. The pot takes up half of my stove it crosses almost two burners. It's great for what I want to use it for, (mostly hot water canning and tamales) but I really didn't visualize how big it was.

The is the best pot for steaming lobster, hands down. Probably for steaming or cooking anything where you need a pot this size.

It is almost impossible to BOIL lobster at home unless you have a commercial grade stove or go outside to use a propane burner. Most residential ranges don't have the BTU's to bring 5 or 8 gals of water to a rapid boil and keep it boiling once you drop in cold lobsters. And since overcooking is what makes lobster meat tough, cooking time & keeping a rapid boil are critical. So the only way to have lobster at home is to steam them. Plus way easier, quicker & taste better.

Great thing about this pot is what is missing in the general description:

the bottom measures 15" in diameter. That means it easily straddles 2 burners on my stove that measure 9.5 inches apart center-to-center. Two burners = twice the heat, easier to maintain a rapid boil & steam.

the bottom of the insert basket sits about 2 inches off the bottom of the outside pot. It takes only 4 QUARTS of water to fill the bottom 2 inches, 5 quarts will bring the water level to about a ¼ inch inside the steam insert. Again, easy to keep 5 quarts boiling over 2 burners.

the outside pot is ~9.5 inches deep, height without the lid is ~11 inches with the steamer insert in place so no chance of the "froth" overflowing that builds up when you drop in & start steaming lobster. Not so with other steamers where the steamer sits over a bottom pan that is only 5-6" deep.

the insert basket has holes not only in the bottom but also along the sides. So the steam reaches whatever you are cooking from all sides. More steam = uniform cooking of all food no matter how it is stacked in the steam basket. Again, better than steamer pots that only have holes in the bottom.

As a result, using 2 burners, I can easily bring 5 quarts of liquid to a rapid boil in 15 minutes, keep it boiling when I drop in cold lobster and precisely time the cooking. And with the wider design & surrounding holes in the steamer basket, generate enough steam to easily cook FOUR 3 lb lobsters at once.

Finally, the pot has NO handles. Just a wide rim on both the pot and the steamer insert, like the old fashioned wash bowls, which are easy to grab with oven mitts. You do NOT want to trust welded handles when moving a pot this size when filled with scalding hot water & food.

Way better that any of those double or triple decker lobster/crab steam pots which are narrower, may not straddle 2 burners, and only release steam from the bottom which means you can't stack lobsters more than 2 deep.

Mine arrived without any dents. If you get a dented one, call the seller direct & they'll gladly replace it for free & double box it. They are aware of the problem. With all the negative reviews about dented pots, I called them to check prior to ordering.
