I like Bodum and have used their products for year. This 8 cup (3-4 real mugs) is no exception. Nice bright color, clean pour and easy to clean.
They have improved the handle so you can carry it more easily and although the holder looks flimsy it is actually very sturdy in use.
The bright colors mean you can have it on the table with friends, without it feeling a little cheap.

I had a French press years ago and hated it. Maybe it was the press, maybe I didn't know how to use it. This is a completely different story. It works great. But as others have pointed out, you MUST follow the directions. Here's what I recommend:1. Use the coarsest grind possible. I have an antique Kitchen Aid A-9 grinder from the '50s. Set on the coarsest setting it's perfect.
2. Use extremely hot but not boiling water. I dispense from an Insta-Hot mounted on the sink.
3. Stir with a non-metallic stirrer. I use a wooden spoon.
4. Let it steep 4 minutes (or a bit longer).
5. Depress the plunger and pour a great cup of coffee.
There are a couple of small downsides:
1. You won't get 8 AMERICAN cups of coffee out of this. I use 1/2 a pot of water and 1/3 cup of coarse coffee to yield ONE big mug of strong coffee (well, maybe a mug and a half)
2. While it's steeping for 4 or 5 minutes it's also cooling. I fill my mug with near-boiling water to preheat it and that works pretty well. Hate to resort to microwaving a fresh cup of French press!
3. You may want to leave the last drop of coffee in your cup because there will be a few stray grounds.
4. Cleanup is only SLIGHTLY less convenient than a paper filter. One of those screen strainers in the kitchen sink will catch any grounds you didn't knock out into the garbage.
Bought this on sale and I'm glad I did. My wife still prefers the drip coffee but when our schedules are not in synch, this is what I use.
Dig the red color, but it also comes in black ;)

Does what I expected makes great coffee, easy to clean, withstands dishwasher ok. My old one had an opening that was large enough to shake my coffee grinder right into the pot. This one has a small lip where the handle is that prevents me from putting the coffee grinder in. Now, I have to spoon the ground coffee into pot.Small complaint, huh?
Makes good coffee what else do you need?
Honest reviews on Bodum New Brazil 8-Cup French Press Coffee Maker, 34-Ounce, Red
I have been fascinated with French Presses ever since a factory in my home-town that made plastic dishes decided what the world needed was a press-pot made in New Jersey. This was about the time the Mercury capsules were orbiting the Earth, and the maker seemed very futuristic in design at that time. Want to see it? [Link removed by Amazon...drop me a note and I'll send you a link to a blog about it.]The Boontonware "InstaBrewer" was from the early 60's and had a rather coarse mesh filter, designed for the "regular grind" canned coffees of the time such as "Chock Full Of Nuts" ("The heavenly coffee..better coffee Rockefeller's money can't buy"). I recently found an InstaBrewer on eBay and still can't get a decent cup out of it.
In my opinion, if you are going to get a French Press, get a Bodum and learn how to use it. My Ikea model was recalled due to the metal bands being too tight and possibly shattering the glass carafe due to thermal expansion. Other no-names never seemed to filter well enough or were hard to push down.
I have a small single cup Bodum which I like, and this larger unit also works well AS LONG AS YOU FOLLOW THE "RULES!"
1. Use coarser coffee than drip or espresso grind. No exceptions!
2. Do not pour in boiling water, just very, very hot water.
3. Stir gently with a PLASTIC stirrer (NOT metal!). I use a plastic chopstick.
4. Wait four minutes before pressing down.
To paraphrase the fairy tale, when it is good, it is very, very good. When it is bad it is terrible. Vary from the "rules" and you will see what I mean.
Also, don't expect to brew tea and coffee in the same pot unless you plan on totally disassembling the unit and cleaning it obsessively.
PS: My unit came without the big BODUM in the base and included two free handleless glass cups with match red sleeves.

I love a good cup of coffee. And I love the Bodum brand and have had several French Presses from them. In fact, I had one that I loved that shattered when I accidentally dropped it on the kitchen floor (luckily the coffee had already been drunk). I thought I was replacing it when I bought this but when it arrived it felt much flimsier and poor fitting. Hmmm.I tried it a couple times and found that it wasn't quite what I was used to. Rather than rewriting my thoughts, I'll just say that I agree with home techie's review when it comes to its flaws. But I did find some good points I want to make sure I share:
1) For those just getting weaned off a filter coffee maker, this is a fun, unintimidating press. In fact, I recommended it to someone in my office just learning and she felt very comfortable using it and with it being so fun and colorful, she kept it out on her counter meaning she ended up using it more.
2) I found it to be just fine for cold press coffee. There wasn't steam to contend with and the larger amount of coffee needed to make a properly balanced brew wasn't wasted. I'm usually to impatient to wait for cold press but with this press I was able to enjoy some tasty iced coffee all summer long. If you've never done cold press coffee, its worth the time.
But, for my everyday coffee needs, I've found the Aeropress a much better choice.
