I have bought many pepper mills throughout my life, from cheap plastic supermarket models to very expensive (e.g., Peugeot) wood or metal versions. This Atlas 8" chrome plated model is the very best. The grind coarseness adjustment is very precise and produces a consistent grind regardless of amount of peppercorns in the unit. (Unlike most other mills, the adjustment screw is under the base and not part of the mechanism that secures the operating crank to the top.) This unit puts out a really serious amount of pepper! Solid, well-made item. I'll be ordering the corresponding salt mill presently.

I bought this to replace the last in a series of pepper mills that I've bought at stores. I finally got smart and read the Amazon reviews and picked it on the basis of the reviews. I like pepper ground fine and the other mills worked for awhile or were inconsistent in how they ground pepper, sometimes letting big chunks by. I'm not a food or cooking expert, just a mom who cooks dinner most nights. I bought this last year and remain happy with it. It is easy to use, easy to clean and consistently does a good job at what it is designed to do -grind pepper. I'm planning to buy another one as a gift.Best Deals for Pepper Mill Imports Atlas Pepper Mill, Chrome, 8"
I have two of the now discontinued OXO handle driven pepper mills. While they worked fine at first, after a while I found that I could not adjust the grind size. The grind was always too big. The Pepper Mill Imports grinder works beautifully. It generates a large quantity of pepper at desired sizes. I bought this because of the excellent Amazon customer reviews. I have been very pleased with it's operation.Honest reviews on Pepper Mill Imports Atlas Pepper Mill, Chrome, 8"
See the photos I uploaded for more info.I've owned 2 of these pepper mills for over a year, one chrome and one copper. While very nice looking (especially the chrome, which doesn't tarnish) and mostly functional, the grind adjustment leaves much to be desired. Most pepper mills I've used have the ability to grind coarse pepper where there are visible chunks of pepper. This one does not.
The construction of this pepper mill prevents coarse grind setting. You can't simple adjust it coarser until you get the grind you want. It has a stopper that prevents the burrs from moving very far away from each other. I always leave it on the coarsest setting because it provides the best pepper output. Fresh pepper corns make a big difference in how well this pepper mill works. Stale pepper will reduce the amount of pepper that comes out, almost to nothing.
I took the mill apart to clean it and it, and it improved the pepper output. This is a nice pepper mill, and it will do it's job, it just doesn't adjust as much as other pepper mills. Look elsewhere if you really like coarse pepper.
However, I do want to say that this is a very nice mill. The crank arm makes grinding pepper really easy. The throughput problems are not bad enough for me to buy a new mill, but I would purchase something different if I bought again.
UPDATE: I find that using fresh pepper in this mill, and not filling it all the way so that I'm changing the pepper more often, makes a big difference in how well this pepper mill performs. It puts out a good amount of pepper, comparable to other mills. The crank arm makes it really easy to grind much more pepper in the same amount of time. I'm still disappointed that the mill does not produce "chunky cracked pepper" like other mills can, but I like this mill and will continue to use it. I don't expect it will ever need to be replaced, just cleaned regularly. This is a good product, just not quite as good as I hoped.
