The spot weld for the handle (on the pan) is a little on the flimsy side. Fix that with a hole screw and bolt then your good to go.Tuesday, February 4, 2014
Chinook Ridgeline 5 Piece Stainless Steel Solo Mess Kit Reviews
Overall a very nice stainless steel mess kit. The unit is nicely made and well constructed with the exception of the frying pan handle which I'll cover in a minute. The cover for the boiling pot fits nicely and very snugly, forming a good seal. The cup is exactly what it appears to be, a cheap plastic cup but hey, it works just fine. The frying pan and the plate are very nice and the the copper coating on the bottom of the boiling pot and frying pan seems very even and nicely applied. All the pieces "nest" together very well and are kept together by the frying pan handle which swings over the packed kit and snaps into place. The kit comes in a nice nylon type bag with a draw string chord that holds it very securely. I only have 2 complaints about the kit and this is why I only gave it 4 stars. 1st.... the frying pan handle is spot welded onto the side of the pan with 2 tiny spot welds and it's not a very sturdy attachment. It will work fine for a light load of food in the pan, eggs & bacon and that sort of thing, but I would be concerned about it failing if you really loaded up the pan with cooked food and tried to lift the pan. My older aluminum kit has a handle that is attached with a wing nut and it's as sturdy and you could ever want and is capable of lifting the frying pan with a heavy load of food in it,, this kits handle is clearly not designed to lift the pan with any significant amount of weight in it. I'll just make sure I transfer my food from the frying pan to the plate and not attempt to lift the pan with it loaded with food. 2nd complaint deals again with the frying pan handle which is also used to lock the stored kit together. It folds over the compacted kit nicely and snaps down to keep the kit compacted but I had hoped it would really snap down solidly, which it doesn't. It's clicks into position and does hold the kit together but it can easily be accidentally popped open. However, the very nice nylon storage bag holds the kit very securely so this is not a big issue to me at all so I guess my only "real" complaint about the kit is that the frying pan handle really needs to be attached a lot more securely than it currently is. All in all I'm very happy with the kit and it should work very well for my needs.
